The collection had a lot of distinct qualities and styles — custom prints, eye-catching details, & stunning allure! Flashy detailing was apparent throughout the collection. Some dresses were covered with glistening sequins, while others were bedecked with intricate beadwork, gemstone-encrusted straps and subtly glimmering appliqués.

More NYFW Journeys — Runways to Retreats

During NYFW you are bound to end up at a wide variety of locales — showcases, private runways, MBFW @ Lincoln Center, store openings, and even fun blogger parties aka Retreats! So first up, let’s take a look at some rockin’ womens’ apparel.

Emily Saunders created a rock ‘n roll Garden of Eden for her spring/summer 2015 collection. And the collection/presentation had it all, including bringing on board for a performance, Singer/Songwriter, Kiki Rowe.

454710716.jpg_0_16_3000_2016

Inspired by the song “Inna Gadda Davida” and the heavy metal sounds of the late 60s, her presentation was a blend of bright hues, playful prints, and modern silhouettes. A variety of styles was surely encompassed — crop top combos, long dresses, peplum, shorts, & more.

454710534.jpg_0_1_3000_2001

This is my fave look, classic white, perfect length for a dressy cocktail or formal event, bold plunging neckline, all in all a confident look. I could definitely see this on a red carpet!

454710428.jpg_328_0_1671.28358209_3000

Not only did Saunder present some amazing looks, but some just as amazing accessories — handbags and clutches!

454709460.jpg_0_48_2760_1888

Accessories continue on with some stunning jewelry pieces.

454710538.jpg_0_1_3000_2001

And finally, no better way to complete a look than perfect styling, down to the hair, make-up, and nails. (nails & make-up by butter London)

Next up, Haspel, popular menswear brand know for seersucker suits.

haspel10

Haspel revisits the sophisticated classic suit, style, and look for spring 2015. Holding it up as the perfect summer uniform, the seersucker suit is delivered in a wide spectrum of colors that include green, tan, red and optic white.

Breaking up the staple is military-inspired outerwear, lightweight windbreakers, naval deck knits and jacquard woven shirting.

From the runway to store openings, it’s NYFW so truly you get to see it all. Boris Bidjan Saberi had their Flagship Store Opening Party.

b2

The shop will be at 494 Greenwich St., NY. The brand has grown into a luxury menswear label, reflecting Saberi’s personal and experimental take on handcrafted clothing. Quoting street and skate culture as one of its main influences, the brand has now begun to pay more attention to functional qualities, whilst maintaining a strong connection to urban roots.

retailer-ink-expands-into-beijing-to-offer-the-likes-of-rick-owens-and-boris-bidjan-saberi-5

Saberi’s compositional mood includes layering of fabrics and edgy cuts expressed through a monochromatic color palette. The main focus of Saberi’s aesthetics is always the human body — seemingly like an armor. Recreated, remolded, and rearranged in a de-structured style, in Saberi’s perspective the human silhouette blends floating shapes with rigid geometries. Nonetheless, organic materials such as felt and cotton coexist in the skillful administration of inorganic elements like vinyl and tar.

And finally, fun blogger parties, retreats, courtesy of Nylon Magazine & Gansevoort Meatpacking Rooftop lounge — Hi-speed Blogger Retreat, Get Re-charged! DJs on board —

Fashion Law Institute’s Unique MBFW Show — Role Models, Not Runway Models!

The nonprofit Fashion Law Institute is the world’s first academic center dedicated to the law and business of fashion. It was founded by Prof. Susan Scafidi with the support of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and its president, Diane von Furstenberg. FLI is based at Fordham Law School. So of course taking part in the realm of fashion, the Institute too takes part with NYFW/MBFW!

fordham_3_1282692124

After changing the landscape of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week runways with last year’s celebrated plus-size fashion show, the Fashion Law Institute once again demonstrated the power of fashion to make a difference in women’s lives with their show featuring designer Carrie Hammer. (pictured below, Carrie & Susan Scafidi — chic date night look for the woman on the go & a fitted red cocktail dress, perfect for the workplace to a cocktail hour)

Last Post for NYMD — Ready, Set, Go!

So wrapping up NY Menswear Day, we have Bespoken NY and another womenswear presentation with Stephen F., all showing for this event-filled day. Do check out my other pieces for NYMD —

NYMD was presented by Cadillac and was held at Industria Superstudio. It was a great time and truly amazing to see so many talented designers. Now let’s take a closer look at Bespoken NY.

Liam+Fayed+Bespoken+Presentation+Mercedes+j3zLaSr_1wMl

Bespoken fleshed out a lineup of its signature tailored pieces. From the formal attitude of suiting to the casual direction highlighted by sportswear, Bespoken revealed a smart undertaking.

Bespoken-Menswear-SS-2015-Lookbook-4

The brand added a custom flare for the season, tropical prints dressed a few pieces with color blocking also making an appearance, as you can see above.

Bespoken-Menswear-SS-2015-Lookbook-15

Bespoken Menswear kept it mostly neutral with dark rich blues, blacks and whites.

Bespoken-Menswear-SS-2015-Lookbook

There were mixtures of street and formal wear, including separates like hoodies and slacks. The brand has really stepped it up with this collection. I love seeing the growth, so adding new modern takes and twists to the brand’s traditional staples.

We even saw a hint of womenswear, nice change-up & twist for Bespoken!

PR Recap Time — Rain Rain, Go Away….

Hah! No sense in finishing that song because for Project Runway, the truth is, the rain should never go away! On PR this week, the regular runway was out the door. And in its place we got to see the 1st ever PR RAINWAY! Rain was pouring as the models strutted down the runway and I loved it all — great designs and a great show!

pr13-ep8-episode2

Heidi & Tim were front and center this week to not only introduce this new rainway, but also this week’s challenge. The designers were to create avant garde looks, which of course had to withstand the rain. Fashion and technology were compared when discussing innovation being essential, being able to push the boundaries, such as with Samsung’s new Curved Ultra HD TV. As technology pushes the envelope so too should the designers. They were encouraged to be forward thinking, cutting edge — creating a look that would WOW from every angle.

shopping

The designers were more than happy for their 1st 2-day challenge this season and were joyously off to Mood with a $300 budget. Tim added that heavy duty construction items for structure and contours would be available for use in the workroom as supplementary materials. But before the designers were off, PR of course displayed some editing foreshadowing magic as we already knew fäde was struggling a bit in this challenge with designer’s block. It was nice to see that Amanda was there for him during a tough time just as he was there for her when she was having a rough week — love those PR friendships!pr13-ep8-episode10At Mood the designers were of course all bumpin’ into each other in the same section of the store — VINYL, thinking of that rain! They were soon back to the workroom to learn how this 2 day challenge would work, Tim coming later on the 1st day, and the models would be there on the 2nd day. Tim time of course saw some great words of wisdom — Kini to watch for gimicks, wonderment for if Sean’s effect would come thru. But my 2 faves were with Amanda and this is the season of the vagina! And for Alexander, April showers will bring May flowers!

pr13-ep8-episode17

The designers were able to un-wind just a bit for this week since it was a 2-day challenge. In between day 1 & 2, they were back to the Gotham Apartments to let loose a bit, enjoy some wine and food up on the rooftop! The morning of day 2 also allowed for some time to make calls to home, so those were a few nice moments to see from each of the designers.

pr13-ep8-episode5

Day 2 also brought about a new decision for Korina to change-up her look. It was then time for model fittings and Sean’s dye effect was still in question. But how great was it of Kini to offer some friendly advice!

pr13-ep8-episode22

The morning of the runway was typical, full of a bit of chaos — preparing for a new runway, last minute adjustments, some looks beginning to come apart, and yes, Sean was still worried if his magic moment would come thru without any issue.

pr13-ep8-episode34

Guest judge this week was Showtime’s Master of Sex actress Caitlin Fitzgerald. I totally forgot Caitlin was on Gossip Girl, which is a show that of course almost had fashion as its own character, thanks to the very talented costume designer Eric Daman. Ironically, Caitlin was “working” at a very upper level fashion position with W Magazine! But back to PR and this amazing runway presentation we got to witness, what a show! I’m still not clear on how the top 3 came about, but heck, that happens almost every week for me with PR.

The top 2 though, was abundantly clear. All 4 judges were singing the praises for both Kini and Sean. I’m happy Kini finally got his win, even if it was shared with Sean. I think Kini was just as much deserving, if not more.

-project-r5unway--sea

Sean’s look was magical in its full blown, dye coming out moment. But the “before” was just a plain white dress, and the “after”, an abstract dye-stained result. The avant garde aspect was for sure in the exact moment the water hit the garment and made the dye start dripping out. So again, happy Kini got his win, but Sean for sure deserved his top placement kudos as well.

pr13-ep8-episode30

Sean definitely exemplified art coming to life this week and there was no doubt you could feel the magic of this moment. And the great aspect, you won’t get dye on you since there was an underlayer cover to protect your skin from the dye. It would be super fun to be out in the rain during a summer rainstorm and have all eyes on you as your dress was constantly changing. Shout-out also to Sean for picking some perfectly coordinating white heels to go with his look from Aldo shoes

-project-ru6nway--sea

But for me it was Kini who hit the homerun, not only a homerun, but knocking it out of the park. This look was head to toe stunning, a full on show, avant garde piece. Every detail was so well thought out and this was just such an eye-catching piece. I was right there with Zac and knowing that all faces would be lit up in seeing this black umbrella-inspired number. Some of the judges were not a fan of the hat, but I thought it was perfection for his runway presentation. The winning aspect for Kini was his look didn’t need the rain to come alive, it was just as vibrant and dynamic even if the rainway was not in existence. I have to also give a beauty shout-out for Kini’s Mary Kay make-up look, great shine on the complexion and I loved the bold red lip!

-project3-runway--sea

The third spot of the top was confusing for me though, with Sandhya getting it. The reason for confusion was not simply because I was unimpressed, but because of the judges commentary. There were some positive statements, but it seemed as if only Heidi was fully on board with this look. So I’m just not sure how with only 1 judges support, out of 4 judges, that she scored high enough to garner a top 3 placement. I didn’t realize a look of bright colors automatically means happy, which then equates to fashion. Nina was right on point in saying this look lacked sophistication, very circus-y and child-like. Sandhya told Tim she was able to edit extremely well, but I’m not sure where her editing eye was with this look. There were not only too many bright colors, but there was way too much going on. Come on judges, if you are really going to try & sell this as a top look, at least sound convincing yourself when you critique it! Because there were 3 other safe looks that probably had mixed reviews as well and certainly ones that were at least fashionable avant garde rather than looks more fit for an unconventional challenge. I mean it had pinwheels just thrown about all over the back right!

-project-runw2ay--sea

Speaking of safe looks, I was a fan of Alexander’s floral number. It looked great coming down the runway and purple was such a great color to mix in with this look. Also, he gets a Philip B. hair shout-out, great chic bun! And finally, a Mary Kay beauty shout-out!!  But I have a Sr. beauty consultant with Mary Kay on board this week to further detail this make-up look. Meet Lauren Barker and see what she had to say! And really so many of the looks made use of a bold eye this week, so the “Graphic Eye Tutorial” below is a great resource for this runway!

“Those models were gorgeous in our bold Mary Kay colors!  The ladies looked great in our Peacock Blue Mineral Eye Color, True Dimensions Lipstick in First Blush and Gel Eyeliner in Black just to name a few.  Want your own runway look?  Luis Casco gave us a glimpse at how to make the perfect Graphic Eye Look with a two-tone cat eye.  Follow these steps to get runway-ready! Liked what you saw on Project Runway?  Contact me to make your own perfect look.  Use our Virtual Makeover tool to discover what colors you will love!”

ProjectRunwayGraphicEyeLook

-project-runway--sea

Shout-outs aside, let’s move onto the more unfortunate news — the bottom 3. Korina landed in the bottom this week, but of course was there ever any real concern?? She did have immunity, the last one! Clearly a last minute change-up didn’t work in her favor. I got what the judges were saying with how flimsy and unfinished this look was. I did however love her choice of Aldo strapped heels!!

-project-ru4nway--sea

Emily was filled with confidence all during this episode, but the judges ended up saying this look was not strong enough. The look was a bit more superhero than avant garde, but it did have potential. I think if she had focused more on structure and volume for the look, not so much added details with the shoulder pads and gloves, then the judges might have been more on board. Heidi was somewhat more favorable, but the rest of the judges were all about the look being so predictable and something they’ve seen before. Another great Aldo shoes look — love the black booties!

-project-runwa1y--sea

This left fäde as the one who went home. It didn’t come as much of a surprise. He just lost it this week and was uninspired. I have no doubts he is a great designer, but PR is a show that pushes you to be creative at the snap of a finger, needing something new for each challenge. He just hit a block as writers do all the time. Just as the judges said, it wasn’t strong, not enough for an avant garde challenge.

MBFW/NYFW Journeys — Let’s Run the Gamut

When you are on the go with fashion week, any given day, chances are, you will see it all — menswear, sexy spring options for women, and even full on design competitions. Another great aspect about fashion week is getting to know designer brands even better, such as with taking a look at what Meden had to offer for S/S 2015!!

f39c26f2276ed3c527b6e76a8995d473           MEDEN

Meden presented a very elegant and sexy presentation — sexy slits, form fitting pieces, and short skirts. The designs encompassed fine art as well as mechanical art, which showed the contrast of the two elements, being sensual/alluring, while also maintaining elegance. The brand presented several dresses with floating panels, to illustrate what it would be like walking through the park on a nice sunny day in May. There was also leather, different rays of blues, and metallics.

Moving on to another dynamic womenswear designer, who too presented a strong showing for S/S 2015, also exuding powerful femininity, dressing for the confident, sexy woman — MESKITA.

454644920.jpg_43_0_2957.5_1943

This collection was influenced by the Empire of Egypt, a mixture of chiffon’s, silks, whimsical pleats, and neoprene hit the runway. The prints exhibit fertility of the Nile blossoms and the deep shades of the Sahara Desert. Each garment exemplified power and strength with a delightful touch of femininity.

454644610.jpg_327_0_1670.28358209_3000

Options for women are always great to take in, but it’s nice to see what’s also out there for men. I mean come on, nice looking male models in suits and bold designer clothing — YES, I’m a fan!

perry-ellis-ss-15

Perry Ellis — Taking cues from the Big Apple’s structured grid system and with a healthy dose of sharp suiting, the collection mixed white-collar workwear with athletic sports gear in a juxtaposition that reflected the changing focus of American menswear from dressed-up stiffness to a more relaxed, casual direction.

The Supima Design Competition was also another big item on the agenda for my day’s outing. This year’s host, none other than super top model Coco Rocha. The judges — BryanBoy, prominent fashion stylist Isabel Dupre, casting agent Natalie Joos, Fashion Market and Accessories Director at W magazine Karla Martinez de Salas, blogger Phil Oh, fashion consultant Roopal Patel, RTW designer Marcia Patmos, style/beauty expert Mary Alice Stephenson, Fashion Stylist at Japanese and Chinese Vogue Anya Ziourova, and Tom & Lorenzo.

Going back to the area of Venezia, Italy, the architecture, the streets, the intricacies, of course all serve as such a huge inspiration for this collection. But the colors of the city also inspired the color palette for this showcase. Glowing pastels of frosted jade, pink shadow, and blue stone are built up in translucent layers.

Womenswear at NYMD?

Why yes, of course! The predominant focus of NYMD is most certainly MENSWEAR! But there was a couple of designers who showcased looks for women. antonio azzuolo presented a mixed collection, one for both men and women. But first up, let’s check out a solely menswear designer, Carlos Campos, and his take on “art coming to life” for S/S 2015!

Carlos Campos SS15 Model Board

For Carlos Campos S/S15, the inspiration comes from renowned Spanish public space artist, Javier Abarca, aka Eltono (“The Tone”). Eltono’s art is known for being made of humble materials, like masking tape or acrylic paint, and for conveying a sense of freedom that transcends geometric patterns and lines. Campos is now applying a similar approach – overlaying starkly geometric treatments to the designs, combined with his traditional design work of profound attention to detail, tailoring, & sense of movement.

_mg_9565_copy_1

This inspiration came to Campos from a trip to Mexico, being astounded and falling in love with the idea of overlaying bold, colorful shapes and sharp angles as a graphic strategy. Campos still retains his staple design aesthetic – subtle and sophisticated design cues. Signature tailoring is also very much present with suits, but construction for this collection is light, thus allowing for motion. Pretty much all staple pieces were given a modern inspirational twist – the bomber jacket (neoprene w/ constructed panels), and sweatshirts to round out the collection, demonstrating a deft intersection between fine art and style.

Carlos Campos Model Shot 2

Look details, left to right — Black Neoprene bomber jacket with double-layer mesh color-block, white Pima cotton button-up shirt, and double-layer mesh dress shorts; 2nd — Black Neoprene bomber jacket with double square motif, white Pima cotton button-up shirt with double square motif, and black Neoprene dress shorts with heavy mesh pocket trim.

The color palette is still streamlined in basics of black and white, but added are pops of color in vibrant blood orange and industrial blue.

Looks, left to right — Deep navy Pima cotton button-up shirt with white color-block and frame trim, and industrial blue paper touch cotton shorts.; 2nd — Industrial blue Pima cotton button-up shirt with blood orange frame trim, and industrial blue cotton trousers.

This collection is meant to challenge the perception that art is static, rather that art should be filled with life and motion. I loved the hint of playfulness and fun with this collection, but at the same time it did have such sophistication and clean lines. It’s a great style for men to showcase being fashionable, but not over the top.

Moving on now to antonio azzuolo, for Spring/Summer 2015, we have a collection for both men and women. The looks, austere, playful, sartorial, and very much streetwear. The mood, romantic, contemplative, and poetic.

04scene-azzuollo-slide-VSTA-jumbo

The inspiration for this collection was an individual, one elegant in spirit and dress, grounded by nature, yet with a traveling, exploring, and free spirit. This person pursues their imagination, poetically interpreting heirlooms of vintage couture while integrating the elements of the streets where he or she has traveled.

Antonio-Azzuolo-Spring-Summer-2015-Collection-010

For the menswear aspect, the designs juxtaposed casual and formal elements, ideal for the modern man who wants to look his best at all times. There are sharp, tailored jackets, which were half cinched and paired with cropped trousers. The eastern flair continued with kimono-style tops, which coincided with a selection of black and white garments for effortless fashion choices. Meanwhile, bright colored plaids rounded out the collection with a western attitude.

Antonio-Azzuolo-Spring-Summer-2015-Collection-006

The brand has signature styles and shapes in black and white, but it was nice to see a.a. represented in some new colors for S/S, such as industrial blue, but also different prints such as the multi-wave neon striped print seen above.

azzuolo_005_1366

It’s also great to see how this collection’s inspiration is translated for both men and women, lots of light layering, but definitely a free flow sense of movement, perfect for one on the go!

NYFW Journeys — The Earlybird Gets the Worm!

For others, Fashion Week likely started later in the week during the 1st week in September. But my journey began on Sept 2nd! And from chic womenswear presentations to varied menswear collections I must say, there was no better way to kick off my time with NYFW!!

For these first 2 straight days I was exposed to a vast array of fashion week presentations – from emerging talent with designers such as Daniel Silverstain – Brazil in the 1960s comes to llfe — and Wenqi Wu – a recent Parsons grad’s take on Russian Constructivism — ,

 Silverstain

**Daniel Silverstain —  looked to famous influential Brazilian architects Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx for his spring 2015 collection. He interpreted the celebratory theme through a mix of innovative fabric techniques and unexpected texture mixes, like 3-d prints with beading, digital prints on micro-fiber, and luxurious silk crepe de chine or jacquard next to futuristic metallic leather. The NY-based Israeli designer also incorporated neoprene to elevate the sportswear-trend aesthetic.**

wenqi-wu-teaser            Wenqi Wu

**Inspired by the 1920’s Russian Constructivism movement of applying modern design techniques to functional and utilitarian clothing, each individual outfit within the collection bared masculine tailoring with an air of femininity, which was infused through bold colors and digital prints.**

untitled

Continuing onto that of brands I was 1st being introduced to, such as Catherine Litke – an eco-friendly brand going into its 3rd season and now expanding with accessories! For spring, she worked with natural fabrics in the form of quilted plaids and patchworks. Accessories included espadrilles and sandals in bright patterns with biodegradable soles and straw totes in a neutral palette of black and tan.

Catherine+Litke+Litke+Presentation+Mercedes+u5DQkwOss_MlOther designers and/or brands opted for their own takes with NYFW, such as pas de calais’ practical in-store presentation or Maison Jules for Macy’s with their F/W 2014 showcase rather than presenting for S/S 2015.

1untitled   pas de Calais —  Designer Yukari Suda used a handmade Japanese indigo dip-dye technique throughout her spring collection. Named the “Gathering,” the lineup was inspired by family and friends gathered at the table. So, the shapes were all relaxed and easy, ranging from linen tops to silky striped dresses.

 untitled

Of course it was great to be able to take part in exclusive NYFW kick-off parties, such as Flaunt Magazine’s Distress Issue Cover Party, featuring Vanessa Hudgens on the cover, with partnerships from Siwy Denim and Brian Lichtenberg, which was held at Gilded Lily.

FLAUNT2

 FLAUNT1

But the main event for these 1st 2 days of my early start to NYFW had to be NYMD, which encompassed a wide variety of dynamic menswear brands – 10 to be exact! NYMD was held at Industria Superstudios and was presented by Cadillac.

Looking ahead to Spring 2015, “Biotopia”, those continuing themes make a strong showing with a lighter edge thanks to subtle florals, embroidered fabrics and Summer weight fabrics.

Desigual is in Bloom for S/S 2015 & Wants You to Say Something Nice!

And as the brand would say — What better way to say something nice than with flowers?!?

454627162.jpg_5_0_2994.5_1993

Looks, left to right — (1) Collarless tulle shell jacket with metallic zipper, luxe jogger pant with sailor-style closure & smocking gathered cuff in colorful floral prints; (2) Tank dress with horizontal pleating details at empire waistband in Mexicana floral print; (3) Loose-fit tank jumpsuit in kaleidoscopic peacock feather print with drawstring waistband, wide leg pant in ethnic print. A collection all about some florals — flowers freshly cut from an imaginary garden — daisies, tropical hibiscus, & Mexican dahlias. The kaleidoscopic effect is representative of blossoming, to help in inspiring happiness, one blossom at a time!

For this recent MBFW/NYFW, Desigual & designer Monsieur Christian Lacroix presented a S/S 2015 collection to a very hyped & energetic crowd in The Theatre at Lincoln Center. The show is definitely one you won’t forget! Not only are the pieces refreshing, but the crowd’s energy is at an all-time high, and the models are doing more than working the runway — they are exuding radiance and positivity with each strut! And to kick off this phenomenal runway, Desigual brought on board Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima!
