UTG Designers Take on Superheroes for their Inspirations

In a world where Superhero movies are all the rage — Spiderman, Batman/Superman collabs, Avengers and the like — it should come as no surprise that Under the Gunn would also want to make use of this popular trend. So this week the designers met up with Tim Gunn at Meltdown Comics in L.A. to learn more about their Superhero challenge. Cort Lane, the VP of Animation & Development for Marvel Television, also joined Tim this week to help deliver the challenge instructions.

super-hero-comic-marvel-superheroes-home-theater-backdrops-522174

This week, the designers were asked to create a look inspired by a Marvel comic superhero. Big warning — the look was not to end up being a costume! Sam’s Superhero choice was what he called “a rebellious, wise-ass”, Hawkeye. Shan went for a female Superhero, Captain Marvel. Asha selected the 1st black Superhero, Falcon. And finally, Oscar went for Gamora. With that, the designers were off to Mood with a $250 budget to start this epic 2-day challenge.

You could tell the tensions were high this week. Most of the designers were contemplating taking risks that would hopefully payoff into big rewards — getting them into the finale. I say risks are important, but these risks should also be calculated, as in make sure you can execute your risk. For example, Oscar wanting to do a pant and not a gown, it makes sense and it’s something I know he can do. I was a bit more concerned though for Asha, who was going to drape pants, which she had never done and was going to work with chiffon, a fabric she had never worked with either. We will see later if these risks paid off?

UTG01-ep12-episode5

Sam’s impact with this week’s challenge was a bit more deep than the traditional worry & concern over what to make. His superhero selection, really getting into the superhero backstory, brought out some unknown events for Sam’s own backstory. He discussed some tough moments of bullying with Mondo. He later shared some even tougher moments and it was then no surprise why he was so down this week. Mondo had a similar moment during his PR season so it was great for Sam to have him right by his side to help pull him out of this moment of despair. I applaud Sam for his courage and bravery this week in sharing his story.

UTG01-ep12-episode17_20

Nick & Anya had the most to lose this week because if Oscar or Shan were eliminated, they would be as well. But I think they both mentors had a relative amount of confidence and trust in their designers. Mondo on the other hand I think knew his 2 designers were most at risk this week and he was right on top of them, doing what he could to ensure they both made it to the finale. And it seemed as if that strategy paid off, anti-climatically, since no designers were eliminated this week. That’s right, all 4 moved onto the finale, but what did the judges have to say about the work this week, including guest judge actress Jaimie Alexander, who was recently in the Superhero flick Thor.

UTG112-Oscar-Garcia-Lopez-Look-Front-1

First up, Oscar! Oscar has had so many shining moments this season, many wins and I’m not sure he was ever in the bottom?? I would have been utterly shocked if he were to have not made the finale. And with this super-dramatic look coming down the runway, I think the judges had no choice but to have him as part of the finale. They even said during deliberations it was clear, Oscar & Shan were in. This look had superhero written all over it. It was a bit more avant garde than the traditional everyday womenswear attire, but it was certainly wearable. I think Rachel Roy said something about not seeing this at her office, well Duh! Not every look created on this show is going to be a piece for work!

A couple of judges definitely caught a costume-vibe, but the others I think just got it! This look is high fashion and it’s what Oscar does and is. He is not creating looks that will get lost in a woman’s closet as she figures out what to wear to work each day. Oscar creates looks that make a woman feel special, that can give her a sense of adventure. I’m so happy Oscar is in the finale and it is well deserved!

SHOUT-OUTS to BlowPro for the luscious golden curls, Benefit Cosmetics for dramatic beauty look complete w/ bold red lip, & Francesca’s for the black platforms.

UTG112-Shan-Keith-Oliver-Look-Front-1

Shan was the other designer that this week the judges were all ready to send to the finale. And I have to agree with his distressed, yet quite chic look for this week, this was another deserving finale spot. The Superhero inspiration with this piece wasn’t literal, but Shan took notice of the worn aspect of Captain Marvel, the “just coming from battle” vibe. He wanted his look to embody this and from that, I can see the inspiration. It was also great that he again made use of a multi-functional look and created a skirt where the tethered/fringed elements could easily be slipped off, very nice!

Shan’s look had a warrior aspect to it and it evoked strength, all of which the judges saw. I’m not sure they had any criticisms so Shan won’t have much to take with him for the finale, but I’m sure he will do just fine. SHOUT-OUT to BlowPro for the super-high chic ponytail.

UTG112-Asha-Daniels-Look-Front

The big debate on the final spot was between Asha & Sam. I don’t think Asha’s look was totally undeserving this week of any consideration; it wasn’t her worst of looks during this competition. But, it was missing a Wow factor moment for me. With an underlying Superhero inspiration, I know costume was not the goal, but I would expect some surprise factor. Mondo called this a quiet moment, but the last challenge is really not the time for quiet, it should be loud, screaming “I should be in the finale!!”

There was ease & elegance to the flowing look though so it was nice to see a fully constructed piece from Asha this week. SHOUT-OUTS to Francesca’s for the golden triangle earrings & Benefit Cosmetics for the elegant beauty look.

UTG112-Sam-Donovan-Look-Front

Sam was again part of the “final spot for the finale” debate. If sending all 4 meant Sam gets to go though, then I’m totally fine with all 4 going. The judges seemed split on who to send and I think the finale would have not been the same without Sam. I’m still not sure how much work this meant the judges did this season — clearly making no decisions this week and often letting a mentor make the final call — but again, I’m happy for Sam.

Sam’s look kind of had me puzzled this week, but not in a bad way. I was searching for this superhero inspiration; it definitely had me thinking. I think Sam drew from story of Hawkeye this week, not the Superhero himself, the costume and attributes. He spoke of rebellion and for me, this was definitely outside the Superhero box, but what was most important was that it was still Sam. Sam has a clear vision for his brand and there are so many women who are ready to wear his clothes. I’m glad we have gotten to see him blossom on Under the Gunn. I can’t wait to see what he creates for the finale!

UTG Team — Come Together, Right Now!

That’s right, on Under the Gunn this week it was all about coming together — the mentors & their working together, the designers coming together from various mentor teams, & hopefully, the mentors & the judges not being on different pages! It sounds all harmonious right? Well almost, all but 1 pairing that is. So what challenge caused all of this coming together?!?

UTG01-ep10-episode15                                     UTG01-ep10-episode17This week was all about Francesca’s, owners of the season’s accessories’ wall. And all I can say is it’s about time! As a huge fan of this retail boutique I was very excited the store was serving as this week’s inspiration. Two designers were set together and from that they were to create 3 looks, a mini collection. The collection needed to embrace the Francesca’s customer, be on trend, unique, and special. The Francesca’s customer is a fun and confident woman, who knows trends and is not afraid to dress boldly; I guess that’s me, right, haha!

FrancescasSaleThe pairings were as follows:

  • Sam/Blake
  • Asha/Natalia
  • Oscar/Shan

UTG01-ep10-episode8                                     UTG01-ep10-episode12

UTG01-ep10-episode5

So this meant that the mentors would all be working together as well, Anya with both Nick & Mondo, as well as just Nick & Mondo. The designers & mentors had a tough road ahead since this was a 1-day challenge. And with that, the pairs were off to Mood with a $450 budget, still without their mentors if I’m not mistaken!

The FIDM workroom certainly had it’s fair share of drama this week, mainly with Asha & Natalia in their pairing, which I will discuss later. It seemed as if Nick could have sparred some with Mondo during their critique with the ladies, but Nick decided to keep quiet. But speaking of boy drama, we did get a little something something between Sam, Shan, & Oscar — CALM DOWN GUYS, HAHA!

UTG_FRANCESCAS_EP007_LrgThmb

The judges panel was full this week, with all 3 main ladies in tow — Zanna, Jen, & Rachel. Tim was also there and joining as well was guest judge Sei Jin Alt, Chief Merchandising Officer for Francesca’s. So where to begin this week, hmmmmmm, let’s start with guys’ duo who were I guess 2nd or safe, but still deserving of some high praise — Sam & Blake!

UTG01-ep10-episode24

Sam & Blake were one pair who worked great together and it’s the great teamwork that is half the battle in any team challenge. I was so happy for Blake since he was in the bottom last week — way to bounce back! I am of course always proud of Sam and was as always impressed by the work done here. When you pick a bold print, you never know how so many judges will receive it. Sadly with so many this week, all it takes is one lower score and you are out of the top. But the guys should feel proud & accomplished for a job well done.

I love the easy, breezy vibe of this collection. I certainly think it embodies the Francesca’s woman. The silhouettes are fun and flirty. SHOUT-OUTS to Blowpro for some amazing hair looks — messy ponytail & side braided ponytail, but also to Francesca’s for some bold accessories — statement heels, blue clutch, turquoise bracelet, stunning drop earrings, & a statement making red necklace.

blake

Let’s move on now to the winning pair this week — Shan & Oscar. This was another JOB WELL DONE! It was great that with this 1st look, the modern jumper/overalls, that the guys thought of the functionality concept they just did last week as the straps were adjustable/movable. I wasn’t as in love with the blazer as the judges were, but it was definitely done in a stunning & bright bold turquoise color, which was a great choice. But what stole the show for me was of course Oscar’s multi-printed haltered maxidress. And even more brownie points — the maxi had pockets!! I can’t tell you how much I love when a dress has pockets!! But I too just love maxidresses; they are effortless, comfortable, versatile, and so chic. And Francesca’s always has some great ones to choose from and I have no doubt that Oscar’s maxi will perform well in sales.

The judges were clearly not going to make an easy decision when it came to the winning designer this week. I was so touched & moved when Oscar told the judges Shan should win, I mean how selfless is that. Oscar knows the feeling of having a few of those 5k wins in the bank and it was just so nice what he said about wanting Shan to have that moment, for his family. Shan too had a nice gesture in saying they should split it, which was also very admirable. This clearly showed great teamwork on both parts and great respect the 2 had for each other as well.

SHOUT-OUTS to Benefit Cosmetics for some wonderful beauty looks, great bold red/tangerine lips; also to Blowpro for some flowing wavy locks!

shanoscar

Now onto the losing team this week, with one designer going home — Asha/Natalia. I will say I’m a much bigger Natalia fan than Asha fan so you may have to excuse my rant, but I have to say a few things here! Doomsday was of course the initial thought with this pairing and that is fine. But if a designer can truly and authentically act professional and just make it work, it doesn’t have to spell Doomsday! Of the 3 pairings, both Asha & Natalia have certainly had some bottom moments and construction issues. But in the last group challenge, everyone thought Nick’s group was doomed and they won, with Natalia’s help I might add. I don’t think Oscar carried her & Stephanie, who is FYI, now eliminated. Also, it appeared as if nobody wanted to be paired with Natalia at the start of the episode and with Asha drawing what she considered a short straw, I’m sure she felt down & out. But get over it!! We even saw later in the episode how other designers, ahem Sam & Shan, started backtracking on some negative views of Natalia. I think had Asha given this a real chance, not a “faking of the funk” as she called it, things might have not been so disastrous. And even if it was still the inevitable end, it could have been one on a higher note. Asha might say she got a bad edit here, but I’m just not seeing how she did anything here to make this work. And if that was a bad edit, boy did they have a lot to choose from.

I’m not sure if Natalia’s slight swan song was the reason she ultimately went home; I mean she really fell on her sword. She said Asha should stay. That she didn’t want Asha blaming her departure on this pair challenge, more specifically on Natalia. And I would say with a 100% certainty, had Asha gone home this week, she would have blamed Natalia. I’m not sure if she thought the public would feel sorry for her, but I don’t think she is receiving much pity, at least not from me!

I hate Natalia going, but I do think Asha should have gone instead or as well. Asha pretty much called the shots with this pair. The collection lacked cohesion & that was because there was no evidence of any true collaborations, either before or during the Mood shopping trip. In fact, all I heard was Natalia repeatedly asking questions and Asha saying “No!” It seems to me if you are going to take the more dominant stance in a group challenge, you should be held just as accountable for your actions. Asha claimed to have done most of the work and if that were true that is just one more reason she should have gone. I think the work was more evenly spread, just my humble opinion!

Both ladies had some construction issues and specifically Natalia was called out for the bustier on the 1st look, her printed dress. But if you look at the design, the concept alone, I think Natalia should have stayed on those grounds. If you had a problem with Natalia’s print, remember, Asha picked most of the fabrics. And while Natalia’s dress had the issues up-front, I still think her dress, which had a stunning back, and the teal shorts she made for the 2nd look are more commercial and Francesca’s friendly then Asha’s dashiki. Asha created the 3rd look, the crop top and asymmetrical skirt. While very commercial, I don’t think either embrace the Francesca’s woman. And the clear loser here for Francesca’s was this dashiki; you would never see something like this in the boutique.

Rant over, sorry for the length, but I was just not happy this week, with the outcome or Asha’s attitude.

SHOUT-OUTS to Blowpro for the wavy golden brown locks & Francesca’s for the amazing belts & nude-strapped heels.

Next week looks as if the designers are working with the average woman, so not models, should be interesting!!

UTG Designers & Their Beach Party!!

1-dibs-on-the-coconut-bra

That’s right! This week on Under the Gunn, the designers started off at the beach! Of course you might think fun in the sun & let’s go surfin’ now, but……..naturally, the setting was just part of the challenge! This week, Tim Gunn, in his nifty flip flops/sandals, delved out the designer instructions for the ever-popular UNCONVENTIONAL challenge. The materials?? — All the decorations and beach items used to decorate for the beach party! The concept was to create a beach-inspired look perfect for the LA beach woman. It was a free-for-all with the run & grab for materials, so how did it all pan out???

2-oh-oscar

The designers were off to the workroom to begin their 1-day challenge. It was quickly time for the mentors’ round-up and we saw some early frustrations! Mondo & Sam were experiencing some difficulties. Sam was stuck in a rut, pretty much, and Mondo was urging him to go a different route. Nick too had to step up with his designers and was really doing a great job in handing out words of wisdom. Oscar had 2 looks, which Nick advised were not working, and so Oscar had to work with a change of design direction as well.

UTG01-ep8-episode17

The models soon thereafter came in for their fittings. It was quite a different vibe this week. Many designers were feeling out frustrations and as always, in a crunch for the time. But the mentors worked a bit differently; they left the designers to just work it all out. The morning of the runway quickly approached and a lot of craziness & doubts were still running rampant, leaving the viewers to wonder how the top & bottom would fall into place for the week!?!

UTG01-ep8-episode10

The judging panel was oddly enough a repeat from last week as Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman joined celebrity stylist Jen Rade, Marie Claire editor Zanna Roberts Rassi, well sans Zanna I guess, but also, designer Rachel Roy. Again nice to see Georgina since we missed her ever so much on PRAS!! So the materials this week were beach-y items. Tim was quick to remind the designers at the start to think outside the box, don’t be literal with the materials, and let their meanings transcend what they actually are. So what did this all mean for the finished products??? Let’s begin with the “safe zone”!!

UTG01-ep8-episode30

The designers started out the episode with a re-hash of the Anya/Nicholas debacle from last week. The designers were upset about the surprise accusations, but the mentors seemed to be all on team Anya, even Tim! I guess all is well that ends well because Anya’s team was safe & sound this week. There were definitely a lot of great looks this week, but I have to say, Blake’s look of woven table liners and straw decorations should not be forgotten. The less colorful items seemed to be on top, I guess with a more streamlined focus to construction and with that, Blake’s belted look certainly fit that bill. I think this is a major Blake come-back so wishing him luck for next week! SHOUT-OUTS to Francesca’s for the gold dangling earrings & multi-colored bracelet & Benefit Cosmetics for the golden eyes & lips for a, haha, Golden beauty look!

UTG108-1096

Shan on the other hand I think should feel a bit lucky because with maybe 1 judge scoring differently, his beach umbrella & inflatable raft look could have been in the bottom. There was hardly any design concept here. It was also quite boring! Many of the top looks weren’t there because of a bold color or overly-dramatic sentiment, but were there because of innovative design-work & great construction, considering the materials used. But Shan’s look didn’t encompass any of this! SHOUT-OUT though to Blowpro for the lovely side-swept do of flowing beachy waves!

UTG108-0904

Continuing with the bad news, let’s look at the actual bottom looks!

I was not sure who was going home this week for the bottom. I know who I wanted, but 2 designers I enjoy watching were here in the bottom, one being Natalia. She again worked with a braiding technique for her raffia & beach umbrella look, and I could see where she was aiming, just disappointed with a lack of time as she was so rushed. This look kind of reminded me of her 1st look of the season, a bit under-developed, a little short, but it had potential. I still see that with Natalia and unlike someone such as Shan this week, I at least appreciated her concept for some design! SHOUT-OUT to Blowpro for some more luscious flowing beach waves!

UTG108-1216

With Natalia safe I was still on pins & needles, wondering if another designer fave of mine, Michelle, would be out this week?? Luckily….. No! However, the judges were still not in love with her brightly color-blocked look of inflatable rafts! With colors such as hot pink & bright sky blue, the look could go either way in a judge’s eye. Many past PR designers were known for looks of bright colors and off-the-wall prints, and were praised, ahem Mondo! Could it look a bit junior, a little too youthful, maybe, but I thought there were a few positives here. The fit was great and I appreciated some color in a sea of nudes & tans. I also liked the use of the colors in a color-blocked set-up, which is an ever-popular trend. I guess better luck next week to Michelle, but glad she is still here! SHOUT-OUT to Blowpro for a gorgeous straightened side-swept look!

UTG108-1150

With Natalia & Michelle safe, that left Stephanie rounding out the bottom & ultimately going home. I never root for someone to go home, but Stephanie has yet to have a standout moment yet. With that said, Michelle has so it made more sense in my eyes that it was Stephanie’s time. She had a great idea with the “melting of leis” and it was certainly a look that inspired fun with popping colors. The differences for me, with this look and that of Michelle’s, was some issues with construction, fit, a less modern silhouette, and Stephanie’s was far more junior. SHOUT-OUT to Francesca’s for the nude sandal heels.

UTG108-0975

It was great to see Oscar in the top again, especially after his rough start. His structured look of a beach mat and straw fans made my jaw drop; I was in awe!! I think that is the point with unconventional challenges, to make the mind wonder and I applaud Oscar for doing just that! The look was just so chic, clean lines, & superb construction considering he was using straw fans! SHOUT-OUTS to Blowpro for the retro beach look of golden waves; Francesca’s for the elegant golden hoop earrings; & Benefit Cosmetics for the bold & dramatic beauty look of a slight smoky eye & glistening nude lip.

UTG108-1293

It had to have been a tough call this week for the top, but Oscar didn’t make top 2; Asha was the fortunate runner-up this week. I definitely was impressed with this textile printed look of straw decorations, woven table liners, palm leaves, & leis. It’s always nice to see a designer branch out, be innovative and that is what Asha did with creating her own print/textile. SHOUT-OUTS TO Benefit Cosmetics for the slight smoky eye & pop of color on the lip; & Francesca’s for maybe the fun printed clutch, gold necklace, & gold cuff (not sure if any of this Asha created, but I’m sure one of the 3 items is from Francesca’s!)

UTG108-0864

But the big winner this week was the comeback kid, no more Mr. Safe, Sam! And I mean big as in he not only won for best look, the 5k, but also the random 1K Benefit Cosmetics gives out this season. This week, the prize was awarded for the look the judges thought was the most fun & free spirited, and that, along with the top look was Sam. This was again nice to see since he too had a rough beginning! But really the judges slacked a bit on adjudicating by letting Mondo pick the winner between his 2 designers. We’ve seen this as Anya has chosen twice now between who to send home. Big difference though in picking a winner versus who to eliminate — Mondo’s designer is still here and I can’t imagine this made Asha feel to great! But back to Sam for his well-deserved win….

His fit & flared look was created with the use of a bamboo beach mat, a beach chair, & a pineapple (check out the clutch!). This was definitely a fun look and perfect for any willing beach bunny! SHOUT-OUTS TO Blowpro for the side-swept loosely fit ponytail; & Francesca’s for the statement heels & cool shades!

UTG108-1056

STAY TUNED FOR MORE UNDER THE GUNN NEXT WEEK!!

UTG Teams’ Challenge: Well Who Expected That?!?

From the preview last week and ones shown throughout this past week, I’m sure everyone was thinking the same thing — Nick’s team was going to implode with some DRAMA! Surely this was the making of their looks being in the bottom. Well, half of that is true! Nick’s group, Oscar, Natalia, & Stephanie, certainly had some dramatic moments, but were not the bottom group. So how did this all unfold?

This week, once again, was the somewhat dreaded, but ever-entertaining team challenges, which PR is known for. Before beginning, we got to see a little more discussion between the designers and mentors about the whole Nick/Isabelle situation. I still don’t feel sorry at all for Isabelle and I don’t think Nick would do that to anyone else on his team. But it was nice that Nick still took some blame and apologized, very classy! Isabelle broke rules and for me, was disrespectful to the whole process so GOOD RIDDANCE!

Pool_at_Getty_Villa                                            imagesEveryone was then off to the immaculate Getty Villa, home to inspired costumes, architecture, art, structure, & much more! Special guest judge, Emmy nominated costume designer, and the costume designer for the recently released action film Pompeii, Wendy Partridge was alongside Tim Gunn to provide instructions for this week’s challenge. The surroundings and the movie were all to be utilized by the designers this week for inspirations. The teams were set based on mentors. Each team was to create a mini-collection of 3 cohesive looks. The designers were told to make wearable pieces, not costumes. The designers were then off to work.

UTG01-ep6-episode25Sketch-time showcased the beginning of a somewhat rough road ahead for Nick’s team. They were all over the place, while the 2 other teams were good to go! Nick thought his team needed “hands-on” Nick, ahhhhh! Things did not get better as the teams went shopping at Mood with their $500 budget. Nick’s team were all in major disagreements, while everyone else was working like they were BFFs!

The designers were all back in the workroom and Oscar/Natalia/Stephanie were still in argument-mode rather than full on work-mode. The mentors came in and before Nick & Tim could even get to the group, Tim could see things weren’t going well. The other groups were all still fine & dandy! I think Nick’s team could have benefited a bit more had he been less involved in the sketch time. It was clear a focus or vision was never agreed upon.

UTG01-ep6-episode3But when Tim & Nick arrived, this was the moment of change. With Tim’s guidance, Nick took a step back, leaving his team to figure out how to, that’s right, MAKE IT WORK! There was finally some calm communication and progress began to show. Nick was even caught off guard when he came by the next morning to see how well his team was doing. Now after watching all of the disastrous previews I then wondered which team was going to end up on the bottom.

UTG01-ep6-episode2The runway began and my questions soon were answered. I knew right off the bat that Anya’s team was in the bottom. The looks were just kind of boring, a little plain, but I did like Blake’s look; it was clearly the shining star! I was happy about that too since I knew he would be safe from elimination. His cloaked black look would have never been in the bottom on it’s own. I wasn’t sure the mini-collection was completely cohesive though.

UTG106-Blake-Smith-Look-FrontShout-outs: Love the Francesca’s heels & gold cuff; Very chic, fresh look from the Benefit Cosmetics Team

Nicholas having a boring & bottom look was no surprise, still wondering why Anya chose him over Brady! I was surprised by Shan’s creation though; it didn’t look anything like his style or aesthetic. I then wondered if somehow the judges would too save Nicholas over Shan, but I was certainly shocked to say the least when neither were eliminated. This makes me wonder if this show is going to be in as much love with Anya as PR was!! I think this was the wrong decision. Nicholas has been in the bottom countless times now and he’s not shown much improvement. Nor has he ever had a top look! Now I fear he will create something halfway decent next week and a less deserving designer will be sent home!

UTG106-Nicholas-Komor-Look-Front

UTG106-Shan-Keith-Oliver-Look-FrontShout-outs: Lovely braided up-do by Blowpro & love the poppin pink lips from Benefit Cosmetics

Change of pace….

Let’s take a look at the safe team this week, aka the middle team — Mondo’s group — Asha, Sam, & Michelle. I kind of knew this would happen also. I could definitely see the Roman & architectural inspirations in these pieces. I thought it was very innovative and creative that the team created their own textile, a dyed-print. I didn’t mind it, but I knew it something one was either going to love or hate. And with such a large judging panel all it would take is one judge to low-ball with the scores and they would then be out of the running to win. Asha’s look to me was the weak link on the team. I just didn’t think her look was luxe-looking at all. It seemed a bit tortured.

UTG106-Asha-Daniels-Look-FrontShout-outs: Love the gold cuff from Francesca’s & another chic braided updo by the Blowpro team

Michelle hit another home-run for me this week. I love the haltered neckline & braided waistband. It was a very simplistically minimalistic look that was done beautifully; remember, it’s not always about bells & whistles! Sam also did a great job this week — Greek goddess coming from battle & kicking ass! The crop top & flowing printed skirt screamed SAM so I’m glad he is sticking to his aesthetic and showing growth.

UTG106-Michelle-Uberreste-Look-Front

Shout-outs:  Gorgeous gold tear-drop earrings from Francesca’s; love the strong & sophisticated structured ponytail from Blowpro;

UTG106-Sam-Donovan-Look-FrontShout-outs: Blowpro s certainly working the braided looks this week, another GREAT JOB!

And now to the winning team and we are left with that being Nick’s team. I never saw this coming, well….. until about halfway thru the episode. The pieces were just all so wearable and I think this factored into their win. I know I would have no problem wearing each and every single look here. The collection was so cohesive and as a resort collection it could take you from the beach to lunch/shopping to a nice dinner. What a great job by Oscar. I am so happy for his win! He sure is wracking up those $5k prizes! This white caped look was just so chic & sophisticated.

UTG106-Oscar-Garcia-Lopez-Winning-Look-FrontShout-outs: Amazing nude heels & dramatic earrings from Francesca’s; & of course, another lovely braided updo from Blowpro

The gals on Nick’s team of course stepped it up this week as well. Stephanie seems to be on a major comeback train and I’m eager to see how long she can keep it up! I love this shades of blue jumper, everything — the tye-dye effect, the buttoned-up neck, the sheer royal blue sleeves & back! And of course, Natalia did an awesome job this week as well. This was a great take on an evening dress, though not a full on gown! The free-flowing blue skirt was eye-catching and the sophisticated white bodice was just as beautiful, capped/structured sleeves & all!

UTG106-Stephanie-Ohnmacht-Look-Front

Shout-outs:  Benefit Cosmetics did great with the make-up, love the blue eyeshadow! Blowpro with another beautiful braided updo; Francesca’s also working it this week, nude-strapped sandals & gold statement earrings

UTG106-Natalia-Fedner-Look-FrontShout-outs: Benefit Cosmetics with another stunning beauty look w/ statement-make blue eyeshadow; Francesca’s w/ more stunning gold jewelry — necklace & bracelets; & once more, w/ feeling, hahaha! Blowpro with another braided updo!

Which UTG Designer Was a Designing Match for Zendaya!?!

This week was all about pop sensation Zendaya! She asked the designers to create a performance look for her. The winning look would be worn by her at one of her upcoming concerts. Zendaya & Tim reminded the designers that the look should not be constricting as Zendaya would have to dance. Also, the look needed to be one that would be just as eye-catching for anyone, no matter where they were seated, front or back row. So with that the designers were off for this 1-day challenge with their $150 budget for Mood!

zendaya-red-feathery-dressBefore getting to all of the big Isabelle/Nick drama, here were a few other tidbits I wanted to mention. Most of the mentor & Tim time with the designers went smoothly. We saw the extreme & daring look Oscar was going for and we got to hear the famous Tim Gunn catchphrase, “Just make it work!” Okay, let’s be real, most of the episode was pretty standard and the main focus was all about Isabelle!

If I’m not mistaken, she even began the episode in the confessional, talking about continuing to be stubborn. This was clearly what she did and it led to a disastrous episode! Tim & Nick also started out the episode with a discussion about Isabelle and even though others didn’t appear to be so Team Nick, I think Tim was. With the whole “shut-up” moment, so I’m not sure Isabelle used those exact words, but she could have asked Nick for a moment of silence a bit more politely. But really, it wasn’t her place. I know Nick is a chatterbox, but he is there to help and mentor his entire team, not just her. And no on else seemed to be bothered.

UTG01-ep5-episode15I know designers need some planning time, but just seeing Isabelle, casually sitting, sipping her tea, while the others were hard at work, just didn’t seem right. She clearly has time management issues and rather than doing some work, she was just sitting! We then saw her & Asha have a nice moment, which happened a few times in the episode. It’s clear from this she can discuss her work & process with someone, I’m just not sure why she wasn’t able to do this with Tim or Nick?

It was then to the standard for Isabelle, not finishing her work in a timely manner like every other designer, but this time things got a bit more CRAZY! So Tim came by and CLEARLY gave her the time warning. This is the same time reminder he always gives. So for Isabelle to later claim she didn’t understand is preposterous! She knows and again is just trying to break the rules and was always going to do this because she doesn’t have to face any consequences. Although being eliminated this week I guess was the ultimate consequence! Tim then came to Nick and told him she wasn’t listening. Nick then went to the sewing room to also remind Isabelle, again very clearly, that her model needed to be in the garment in less than 10 minutes and she was still hard at work sewing. She said Nick should have been more supporting and just to tell her when time was up. But that was actually what he was trying to do and again, she just wasn’t listening. Tim had to come back in and literally yank her model out of the room. Next up for Isabelle with the blame game was her broken finger, but that had nothing to do with why her look wasn’t finished on time; it was just another excuse.

UTG01-ep5-episode24Sticking with Isabelle drama let’s go ahead and discuss her look, which was in the bottom and was the eliminated look this week. This white & shimmering jumpsuit was just not great no matter which way you look at it. Isabelle can blame Nick, her finger, her mistakes, time, etc, but the truth is, this was not a great look regardless. I don’t think it would work in any way, shape, or form as a on-stage concert look. And as far as the comments from her & Nick, she threw down the gauntlet first and threw Nick under the bus. Nick also had other designers in the bottom and did he show a lack of support? No! So I’m not sure why they are so worried about that. There is a huge difference between the other designers and Isabelle. If he really wanted to throw her under the bus, he could have done so more than just saying there were some issues. He didn’t mention her rude comments or her being repeatedly told to stop working. So in fact, he was nice & held way back! On a positive note, the silver heels from Francesca’s & the chic up-do from Blowpro were eye-catching!

UTG01-ep5-episode11Moving on from that, here is a quick recap for the few designers who were in the middle this week –I loved Michelle’s look. I could totally see Zendaya rocking this on stage. It also seemed like she could really move & dance around on stage in this look. I felt as if other designers didn’t think about that aspect enough! Francesca’s shout-out, love the black open toed booties & silver cuff! Great job also by Benefit Cosmetics and the smoky eye! And another great high up-do from Blowpro!

UTG105-Michelle-Uberreste-Look-Front-1

Nicholas’ look was a bottom one for me. I’m not sure how it escaped the judges’ attention and I’m also not sure how Zendaya would dance in this? Also, just like most of his looks, it’s boring!! Still not sure why Anya chose him over Brady because Brady would have done great at this challenge! In fact, in an earlier post from this show I even said Brady’s aesthetic would work perfectly with Zendaya! Great side-swept do by Blowpro and another great cat smoky eye from Benefit Cosmetics!

UTG105-Nicholas-Komor-Look-FrontI also loved Sam’s look this week. The skirt could have been a bit longer, but other than that, this look was so fun and youthful. Zendaya could dance & jump around and just have so much fun in this look. Great job Blowpro with the long luscious hair & I love the shimmery pink lip from Benefit Cosmetics!

UTG105-Sam-Donovan-Look-Front

So these are the other 2 looks the judges had in the bottom. Stephanie’s faux leather crop top & pants were certainly deserving of this. The pants just didn’t fit well at all. And again, I’m not sure Zendaya moving & dancing was really thought about here. Also, it doesn’t seem to fit Zendaya’s style and youthfulness; it seems a bit more dated. Francesca’s shout-out, great heels though for this look!

UTG105-Stephanie-Ohnmacht-Look-FrontThe judges also made some critiques for Natalia’s look, but I did not agree! They said this was more of a back-up dancer look, but I thought it was fitting to Zendaya’s youthful and tomboyish side. There was also a compliment about the sandals, but Zendaya is not always in heels. When she competed on Dancing with the Stars, she was often in sneakers. Shout-outs, love the messy ponytail from Blowpro and the make-up is so fresh & clean here from Benefit Cosmetics.

UTG105-Natalie-Fedner-Look-FrontI guess there was more of a bottom 4, although sometimes it was hard to tell. The judges were definitely mixed with their reviews. Blake’s look was one of mixed reviews. I think it was a little plain for the stage and it kind of takes me back to J. Law’s Golden Globes Dior dress, with the belted straps. I don’t doubt Blake’s design capabilities though so I’m sure he will be back on track next week! Benefit Cosmetics really working the smoky cat eye this week!

UTG01-ep5-episode10

I was worried Oscar was going on the ice skating route this week, but he certainly made his look not fall into that realm. I think it may be a little too mature for Zendaya, maybe in a few years when she is trying to break out of the Disney mold like Miley! But it certainly looked like an outfit many performers wear. They love the one-piece bodysuits such as this. It has shimmer & fringe, which works great with movement and to catch everyone’s attention. And how fitting that Francesca’s had the matching red open toed booties!

UTG01-ep5-episode9

There was a clear top 2 though for this week and Shan was one. I think it’s great he was able to whip out this leather jacket so fat and it looks great, but I’m just not sure how well it fit the challenge. I think the fun printed leggings would work, but with a leather jacket, would Zendaya be able to dance & move freely? Love the Francesca’s black booties!!

UTG01-ep5-episode12

And finally, this week’s winning look, Asha’s leather crop top & skirt with red flannel. I guess we saw this look worked on stage, from the preview clip they showed, but again, with this skirt & the leather material I did have my doubts on the dancing & moving aspect. But regardless, it was a great look and you could tell Zendaya was clearly over the moon for it! Shout-outs to all here — bold daring make-up look from Benefit Cosmetics, flowing locks curled to the extreme from Blowpro, & sexy black booties from Francesca’s.

UTG Designers Present Their Take on Red Carpet Fashion

The Under the Gunn designers for this week took on red carpet creations, which is quite fitting since we are in the midst of all the red carpet glitz & glam (Grammy’s, Golden Globes, etc.),. The designers started off the episode with a Hollywood bus tour from Starline to help provide some Hollywood glamour inspiration for their red carpet look. UTG judge & Sr. Fashion Editor of Marie Claire Zanna Roberts-Rossi was alongside Tim Gunn this week to hand out the designers marching orders.

HollywoodTour_busZanna encouraged the designers to make their challenge look dynamic and eye-catching. Why? Well the winning look this week would at some point be worn by an unknown celeb (kind of vague?) and pics of the celeb would be put in Marie Claire. A few other bits of general information for this week’s episode — we saw the designers would be living it up this season in LA at the Apex Apartments. Of course we knew this was going to be a tough challenge with only 1 day to complete the look!! And with that the designers were off to Mood with a $200 budget.

I wonder if this season in every episode we are going to have a designer who flagrantly violates the rules?? Last week it was Isabelle in the workroom/sewing room and this week it was Camila at Mood. All of the designers were checked out, in line, or ready to go all while Camila was still gathering and cutting fabrics. Tim has had to raise his voice now twice though at certain designers so I say — LET’S GET IT TOGETHER!!

The designers were then back to the workroom to start off a day of chaos & craziness! Tim came by to first check on the mentors and with that let’s go ahead and get all the Nick drama out this week. So Tim took notice of Nick’s mentoring style very early on this week — from the bus to the workroom. The mentors however didn’t go to Mood and that made sense, probably too many cooks in the kitchen! But Tim had some firm words too for Nick this week. We saw Nick helping sketch, working with patterns, draping muslin, etc. It starts the debate of how much mentoring is too much?

Hollywood_MondoNickAnyaAnya & Mondo certainly had a bit more of a laid back approach. But you have to wonder how well does that work out since Mondo had 2 designers in the bottom this week? I definitely think there needs to be a balance though, a line. You have to help, but not give the answers. I think Nick, being a teacher and all, is struggling a bit with the balance. But, I think if he just took a few steps back he can definitely MAKE IT WORK! Mondo however, I think could serve to take 1 step forward. He could stand to be a bit more involved. I’m still not sure about Anya’s mentoring. I just felt her advice was so vague and she too could amp it up a bit. But hey, mentoring is not easy and it’s a learning curve so I’m eager to see how each progresses.

Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Mondo-Designers                                     Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Nick-DesignersThis show has a bit of an odd balance though, lots going on. There is focus on the mentors & that mentoring aspect, but the focus has to be on the designers, as well. It was hard this week because there were designers I felt we didn’t even see until their models hit the runway — Asha, Oscar, even Brady. Speaking of models, so funny watching their 1st fittings this week and Shan was certainly in for a large surprise, large breasts on his model that is!

Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Anya-DesignersIt was then finally the day of the runway and what do we see, another designer choosing to not go to the bathroom?? So funny and yes, I had to mention this. While Isabelle was at Mood they aired her saying she had to really go, but ultimately decided to wait. Then again, on the day of the runway, Shan was aired saying he had to go, but again, would hold it! Time for the runway though and Tim announced 1 more fun surprise for this week and the rest of the season. The winning designer each week would receive $5,000, WOW! This is a nice treat just in the event you win a couple of challenges, but don’t win the show; at least you would walk away with something.

UTG01-ep3-episode3The judges (celeb stylist Jen Rade, designer Rachel Roy, & fashion editor Zanna) only discussed 6 looks this week — a top & bottom 3. Thus, not much attention to the rest, which left a lot of designers lost in translation. I would say to Nicholas & Asha, congrats on being safe this week, but there is definitely still some room for improvement!

utg-nk-ep3-sketch                         utg-ad-ep3-sketch

  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — Love these black strapped heels on Asha’s model!

I love Brady’s girl and I could see a young hot celeb like Miley or Zendaya rocking that look. My only thought would be to maybe not do the full print on both pieces, maybe use a solid top or bottom with the print? But I can’t wait to see more! It’s clear though that we were seeing creations for a wide range of red carpets, going from Brady’s casual street style to full on glitz & glam with Natalia or Oscar, whose looks I also liked — great fit, gorgeous lines, striking looks. Let’s look at the top 3 for this week now!

utg-bl-ep3-sketch

  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — love the purple metallic shoes!
  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — One of my fave ways to wear my own hair, the side braided ponytail

utg-rr-ep3-nf-f_0                 utg-rr-ep3-nf-b_1                 utg-rr-ep3-ogl-b_0

  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — Both blondes, great job on the hair, retroglam & modern chic!
  • BENEFIT COSMETICS SHOUTOUT — Love the pop of red on the lip w/ Natalia’s model & the makeup for Oscar’s, it’s just so fresh & clean, simply beautiful & stunning!
  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — Oscar’s model, the gold triangle earrings, perfect touch!

utg-ogl-ep3-sketchI’m sure it was tough to judge for the top 3 this week. I was surprised that this was the top 3; I was sure Natalia, Oscar, or Brady, at least one, would be there. But it’s clear the judges went for the more risky or daring looks this week, perhaps those a bit more unique. Shan’s look was definitely one to push the boundaries. I mean, those boobs could have easily fallen out! I wasn’t a fan of this look, but it was something different. The print was just a bit too much for me and a little too much boob-age. But the back of the blazer was a surprising touch with an open back and I did like that element!

utg-sko-ep3-sketchBlake was a surprise for me this week, but ultimately it made sense. I completely agreed with the judges. We see it all throughout red carpet season, these bold, different, and unique looks — reference J.Law pretty much any time so far this red carpet season! People either really love it or really hate it. The look could be on Glamour Mag’s best dressed or on E Fashion Police’s worst dressed list. The look was very soft, light, & airy.

utg-rr-ep3-bs-f

  • SHOUTOUTS ALL AROUND! — Blowpro w/ the sweeping updo; Francesca’s with the clear clutch; Benefit cosmetics with the clean look & nude lip!

I was still though so ecstatic for Sam this week! I’ve been searching myself for an amazing jumpsuit for fashion week and it’s so funny that is what he designed for this week! I thought this look was fantastically phenomenal. It would work wonders on a wide variety of red carpets. The back was done so beautifully and many women could wear this. If I could have any wish for it though, I might would want the neckline a bit deeper, maybe steal some boobage showing from Shan’s look!?! One thing I know is I can’t wait to see more!

utg-rr-ep3-sd-f

  • Francesca’s — again, great job with the accessories — the necklace & open-toed booties!!

Now to the more depressing side of the show — the bottom 3, which was so weird this week because usually they send the designer home last, but the announcement this week was reversed? Let’s begin with Michelle who even though was in the bottom, I knew she was not going home. I did agree with Tim and his comment about the hoo-hah focal point diamond, but Michelle did have some great elements this week. They just didn’t all come together in such a short time. I loved the popping red color and I thought the fit was great, but to me it was just a little to basic. I’m not counting this gal out yet though!

UTG103-Michelle-Uberreste-Look-Front

  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — love the structured ponytail!

I completely agree with the remainder of the bottom 3. I was a bit surprised though that Camila was the one to go, but it wasn’t undeserving. This look was just far too basic and what she tried to make special with the back of the dress really just looked sloppy. The top part being sheer would have been far more sufficient and efficient than the draping bow-looking thing down the back. If she is that unsure of the fabrics and the host of other excuses she gave then maybe she is not quite ready for a show of this caliber yet.

utg-rr-ep3-cc-b                                                                                               UTG103-Camila-Castillo-Losing-Look-Front-900x1350And finally, there was Stephanie. I kind of thought she was heading home. I hated seeing again this god awful green color. The dress really just looked tortured. It was too short and looked like prom gone wrong. When the mentor’s teams were formed I really thought Stephanie being selected was a surprise. If she can’t get it together next week I think it’s safe to say I was right!

UTG: Is Project Runway meets “The Voice”?!?

Ok so maybe Under the Gunn, aka “UTG” is not like The Voice, no singing, but there was a similar aspect or two when it came down to the team selections. But most certainly, UTG started off in true PR form with the meet & greets and then out comes Tim. He of course doesn’t just say “Hello”, but rather brings out the mentors and really gets right down to business.

images   MEETS  The-Voice1When the mentors — Nick Verreos, Mondo Guerra, & Anya Ayoung-Chee — come out, we find out that eliminations are not just for the designers, but the mentors too. If a mentor’s team of designers are all eliminated, so to is the mentor. Only 1 designer and 1 mentor will win Under the Gunn. But this week was all about forming the mentor’s team and the 1st challenge.

Under-The-Gunn-Key-Art-VerticalSo really a mentor’s group is just that, it’s not like a season of team challenges. The designers were reminded this is an individual competition. The 1st challenge was basically a “show us who you are” challenge. The designers were given a Mood tote bag with 6 different fabrics — gold/shiny fabric, black/white polka dot, black/red flannel, horse print pattern, black knit & a bright blue knit. The look had to show who they were as a designer and only these fabrics could be used, as many different ones or little of each. This challenge was also about seeing how the designers coped with this level of pressure as they only had 6 hours!!

There were 15 designers though waiting for instruction, but only half competed this week. We will see the other half next week. But each mentor’s group will only have 4 members so that means 3 are eliminated right after the 1st challenge. So the 1st 8 designers were off to their new workroom at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, aka FIDM. We got to see the lovely Francesca’s accessories wall. But after a few oooo’s & ahhhhh’s, it was time to get to work!

FrancescasAccessoriesNOT THE WALL, BUT RIGHT FROM A FRANCESCA’S STORE

The designers were all having mini-freakouts and the mentors were also starting their work. They began to look thru the designer portfolios and discussions of who was already catching their eye! We started seeing what each mentor wanted — Nick wants versatility; Mondo wants a risk-taker; Anya wants to see clear aesthetics/visions. While Tim came to check in on the mentors, it was actually the mentors who came to check on the designers’ progress.

So from the mentors workroom visit, here is what we saw — they all still want Brady!; they want Oscar to find an element of surprise. They were worried about Melissa only using the polka dot fabric. We kept hearing Anya ask the most ridiculous question ever, about if the designers, first being Michelle, were nervous! We get to Camila and a point was made about 3 designers using the black and gold fabrics. This seemed kind of pointless, there were only 6 fabrics for each designer to choose; there was bound to be a little commonality. They questioned how much Blake could show with just an LBD. Shan sort of came to the forefront as a potential front-runner since he created a bomber jacket. And finally, Natalia, who was a great big ball of energy, was definitely showing the most nerves this week.

UTG01-ep1-episode17So it was nearing the time for the final runway moment. Natalia decided to change up to a braiding technique during pretty much the final hour. But other designers too threw in some last minute additions — Oscar with a hat and Brady with name stitching on his crop top tee. Now though, it’s the moment that counts and who impressed on the runway.

My favorite look was Blakes’. Yes, it was just an LBD, but it was done beautifully. There were some great details as well from the straps to the back, and it really just had such a great fit. I was then in a toss-up between Michelle and Shan. Michelle’s look was also very chic and had a great fit. But I wasn’t sure if I loved all of the cut-outs with use of the gold fabric, but it definitely had a great futuristic vibe. Shan’s LBD dress was also great and really rivaled Blakes’, but you have to give some credit for him also making a jacket! For me though, as much as I loved that ability, I didn’t like this particular one with the crazy mix of fabrics, but then again, he was working with what he was given.

Shan_(team_Anya)_xl

SHAN’S LOOK

Next is Brady and while I would probably never wear that look as it came down the runway, I would wear some of the pieces separately. He also created a lot — the tee, skirt, and jacket. I can just see who is girl is and it’s not me, but I don’t hate that girl! Oscar was next for me and there were a few aspects I might have changed, but I liked the potential I saw. He did use a few too many accessories, but he is all about glam and chicness and I like that!

tvfash2112       OSCAR’S LOOK

The bottom for me was Natalia, Melissa, & Camila. With Camila, I do agree with the mentors and she just created something she knew how to do with the slashed detailing and it really wasn’t that spectacular. I also didn’t care for the length or the flapper bottom. Natalia’s dress, I mean yes, it was way to short! But I think if it was longer, it wouldn’t have been such a bad dress. I liked her mix of the blue & black fabrics and I think the braiding technique somewhat worked. So Melissa’s problem was just using the black/white polka dot fabric. It really wasn’t special and you can find those pieces almost anywhere. If she even made the top out of the blue fabric or used some other fabric it might have worked.

under-the-gunn-melissa                MELISSA’S LOOK

It’s always sad with elimination time and Melissa was the 1st and only to go this week. The decision made sense in light of her limited vision this week. There was also a concern for Natalia as she was the last one standing, but then, in a surprise move, Mondo invited her to be on his team and Nick did as well. It was definitely a surprise moment since she too had a not so great look this week, but I think it was right for her to stay. The potential is there and I think Nick will be a great mentor for her, especially in light of her time management issues.

-4c471b03cb9d5136      NATALIA                     UTG101-Look-3-BackSo this is where “The Voice” comparison comes in. No the mentors were not choosing blindly, but they did get to voice who they wanted on their team. But if more than 1 mentor wanted a designer, it was then the designer who chose. This is where some concern came in for Nick this week. I think some designers made the wrong choice by not going with Nick, but he did end up with 2 slots filled, Natalia & Oscar. And I think he will work great with both. He also will have 2 slots for next week and that leaves him a lot more choices versus Anya, who quickly filled up 3 of her 4 slots this week!

-b760643af52bf577               Brady                    img-thingBlake’s Look

I think it was a bad move to fill up 3 slots because 7 designers are still to come next week; it’s just a big risk. Anya did score a great pick though with Brady and I think they will make a good team. Shan also joined her team and while I was sad for Nick, since I know he wanted him so badly, I am intrigued to see how Anya’s design abilities will help Shan develop his?? And then finally, Blake picked Anya, and again, I’m not sure if this was the best match, but I’m interested to see how Anya will mentor her designers!

tvfash4112          CAMILA’S LOOK

Finally, let’s look at Mondo’s picks and I think he started off well with his 2 picks. I still was surprised he was going for a 3rd to fill with Natalia, but Mondo is not looking to shabby. I think his best pick was Michelle and I think they will be a good pair. I’m still not sold on Camila, but I want to see what else she able to create/design and maybe Mondo can get that out of her.

under-the-gunn-michelle             MICHELLE

So 2 must go for the next episode and I wonder how that will all come about, CAN’T WAIT!!

Saying Hello to “Under the Gunn” & Goodbye to “PRAS”

I’ve never been satisfied with only 1 season of Project Runway a year. Well then came PRAS, which I still have my qualms about, but it at least gave me somewhat of what I wanted. Of course now, maybe we won’t need a PRAS EVERY YEAR! WHY? Because now we have “Under the Gunn.”

tim-gunn-anya-ayoung-chee-nick-verreos-mondo-guerra-under-the-gunnSo as PRAS closed the curtains for season 3, Lifetime’s new show UTG unveiled it’s 1st showing! From writing/blogging at this point, I have not watched the 1st episode yet, but I wanted to do a fun intro post to kick things off — discuss the outline of the show, maybe see who my early faves are, etc. But first, since there was a reunion special for PRAS, I have to say a few parting words right!

So the reunion started off with a recap of the finale presentations. Ultimately I still agree with Seth winning, despite all the more detailed backstories given. But Korto is not without other good news since she announced she was pregnant so CONGRATS to her!! We also saw a bit more on the Elena story I always thought they were pushing this season — her dark horse title, never winning a competition her season, etc. I think the producers really wanted to push her as the winner, but couldn’t after the final collections were made. Her collection just wasn’t that great.

PJAS3We also had to relive the Chris/Viktor argument. I still think Viktor overreacted. He gave a few bits of advice to Chris, yet somehow that made his garment suck?!? Ahhhh, no, I don’t think so! But not all drama, we got to see some extras from some of the designers’ wins — Debbie Harry will be wearing Elena’s punk jacket on tour; Jeffrey did costume work for Lifetime movie Flowers in the Attic; Viktor made Alyssa his cocktail print winning look, which she said she would love to wear.

There were some un-fun parts as we saw about Daniel’s horrific-looking car accident; I’m glad he’s okay! Oh and wait, another surprise announcement, what is in the PR water because Zanna also announced pregnancy news. So DOUBLE CONGRATS to her since she’s expecting twins!! Irina was very quiet during the show so it was nice to see some attention finally shift there. We of course had to relive the “bridal” catastrophe. Although I still contend that dress was not bridal and it could totally have been worn on the red carpet! And as she said, I don’t see why she was not given the chance to move forward when other designers this season got 3rd and 4th chances.

But to end on a positive note, it was back to Seth and he said he just finished his QVC line. Also, he will be partnering with Mary Kay to work on a collection so that is great news! I look forward to seeing some of these designer’s names in the future because I think a few will have some continued successes!

But now onto the highly anticipated new reality design competition, UTG! Tim Gunn has been such an integral part of PR and I am very excited to see him in a new role. He is now passing his mentor-ship role to 3 former PR alums — Mondo Guerra, Anya Ayoung-Chee, and Nick Verreos. This is all with the goal of proving they have the vision and business savvy to mentor and manage a fashion empire with 15 new up-and-coming designers under their watch.

TimGunn                    UnderTheGunn_NickVerreos                 UnderTheGunn_MondoGuerra

UnderTheGunn_AnyaAyongCheePersonally, of these 3, I love Nick the most so I am definitely rooting for him. Although Mondo did a great job with his design time on PR, so I am excited to see how he does as well. Now with Anya, this is a whole different story for me. I will say, not a fan, but I am interested to see how she copes with this type of show. She could barely sew on PR, but somehow pulled thru & won, so let’s see if she can self-teach her way thru the business of fashion too!

Each mentor will have a team of designers they must manage, coach and, when necessary, knock down with tough love in order to lead them to runway success. This new crop of designers will face the critiques of designer Rachel Roy, celebrity stylist Jen Rade, creator of some of the most iconic red carpet looks in Hollywood, and TV fashion correspondent and Marie Claire Senior Fashion Editor Zanna Roberts Rassi.

UnderTheGunn_RachelRoy                    UnderTheGunn_JenRade                 UnderTheGunn_ZannaRobertsRassiThe show’s sponsors are: Lexus, Marie Claire Magazine, Benefit Cosmetics, Blowpro, francesca’s, Brother Sewing and Embroidery and ROWENTA. I have to say, I love francesca’s. I have shopped their for years, always considering the boutique vintage shop as almost a hidden treasure. But I’m so ecstatic they are making their way to the forefront on as big a platform as this show! Their jewelry and accessories are some of the most fave pieces I own with my personal collection so I think they will do a great job with complimenting the looks this season!

In the first two episodes, the process is, Tim will present a race-around-the-clock challenge to the fashion hopefuls. The three mentors will measure the skill level of the contestants and duke it out to determine which four designers will land on their teams. Then, Tim will present new challenges that will test the mentors’ ability to bring out the best in their designers as they guide them through the competition. But remember, only 1 designer and 1 mentor will win and I am EAGER to see how this all plays out! And this is what they win:

  • a cash prize of $100,000
  • a sewing and embroidery studio
  • an all-expense paid trip to Paris
  • Blowpro styling products
  • the opportunity to design the uniform for Benefit Cosmetics’ field team members and unveil the ensemble during a national press conference in New York City
  • a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine
  • a one-year position as guest editor for Marie Claire
  • a 2014 Lexus vehicle
  • and the opportunity to design a collection sold exclusively at Francesca’s.

Pretty decent prize pack!! So you can look at all the designers on your own and do so right here, but these are the few I was impressed by the most when looking at their past work, bios, etc.

OSCAR GARCIA-LOPEZ:                                                      UnderTheGunn_OscarLopez

I mean, all I can say from reading his online bio & looking at his portfolio of work is WOW!! His story seems like such a real-life struggle and thru hard work and determination, he is finally living his dream. For his work, I mean the eveningwear is stunning. I could seeing it rivaling some of the many gowns I’m seeing on the red carpet season now! Very eager to see his work develop and hope he does well on the show!

AMY SIM                                                   UnderTheGunn_Amy

So first off, wow, this lady is over 50! I am shocked because she certainly doesn’t design for the over 40 crowd, nor does she look her age! I see from her past work she is very versatile with her range — menswear, dresses, pants, jackets, blazers, etc. I love how fun, flirty, & feminine her looks are and look forward to seeing her on UTG!

NATALIA FEDNER:                                                                              UnderTheGunn_Natalia_Fedner

In just reading Natalia’s online bio she seems like a ball of energy and of charm. So much of her portfolio were sketches and I wish I could have seen those actual pieces, but regardless, she still had a few actual looks that were eye-catching. I am all about gorgeous back details and I saw one from her that was STUNNING!

BRADY LANGE                                                 UnderTheGunn_BradyLange

I can say I didn’t love every look in the portfolio, but there were a few that caught my eye and definitely make me think there is something about this guy! From reading his online bio, it sounds as if he might be a handful, but hey, that’s reality TV!
