2015 Supima Design Competition

Supima is America’s luxury cotton. The annual Supima Design Competition was created to give runway exposure to emerging talent and was modeled after the legendary 1954 Wool Secretariat competition that launched the careers of the then-teenaged Yves St. Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.

12052458_10153078104451759_6477756776863435639_oSeven of America’s top design schools (AAU, FIDM, FIT, Kent State University, Pratt BF+DA, RISD, SCAD) are asked to select one finalist from among their graduating seniors. Each finalist is asked to create a capsule collection of women’s eveningwear gowns from premium Supima denims, knits, corduroys, twills, and shirting. A prestigious panel of judges decides the winner at a full-fledged fashion show held during New York Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. The winner is announced at the completion of the show and receives a $10,000 cash award.

LET’S START WITH THE WINNER!

Kate Mckenna — Savannah College of Art & Design  Kate

Having always been an artistic and creatively driven child, fashion was just one of the ways she expressed herself. After being completely captivated by the dressmaking scene in Sleeping Beauty, she was hooked on the idea of making dresses. Mckenna’s area of design focuses on women’s eveningwear, ready-to-wear and bridal.

winner-2015-runway-shot

Mckenna feels that fabrication is the most important part of her design process. “I design with a narrative, there’s always a reason or inspiration for silhouettes and details. I like to tell stories through my designs.” Here, her focus was on West African and Haitian voodoo in the deep south, with a deeper look into traditional indigo dying & basket weaving.

Lauren Nahigian — Pratt Institute Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator

Lauren

Nahigian focuses on designing women’s sportswear but readily admits that her designs are “kind of out there”. An abundance of fabric, crazy colors and prints and intricate embellishments are all design elements Nahigian uses to express her vision.

72071c99d625e4ecee17bc78f86459e5

For this collection, Nahigian says — “1970’s flirty, weird girl. Something’s a little strange about how she looks and acts but you’re obsessed with her anyway. You’ll secretly wish you too were sporting her attitude.”

Julia Han — Rhode Island School of Design  Julian

Han specializes in women’s knitwear and textile development, believing that fabric is the essential part of any design. With a philosophy rooted in the idea of material exploration and fabrics, Han pushes conventional materials and techniques in unconventional ways to create pieces that make you stop and look. “Fashion is a combination of art, design, culture, business and craft, in short, a culmination of many of the things I am interested in”, says Han.

12094950_10153078103886759_4699878042195823529_o    9f54eaeebbdc44334b05a650a6da72bd

Han describes her capsule collection by saying — “Initially inspired by the layered imagery of Patti Smith’s collection of prose poems, The Coral Sea, my Supima capsule collection, translates written poetry into wearable garments. This eveningwear collection mainly plays off of unexpected poetic textures and fabric manipulations in hues of blue. If The Coral Sea was a collection of clothing, rather than words, what would it look like and ultimately feel like?”

juliahan3_96288900   Supima Design Competition - Runway - Spring 2016 New York Fashion Week: The Shows

Nnamdi Agum — FIT  Nnamdi

Agum takes more of a tactical approach to design and prefers working with his hands on the form. “ I enjoy creating clothing that makes people think”, says Agum. From eliminating or hiding seams to designing clothing with complicated and unusual seaming, Nnamdi Agum likes to push the boundaries of fashion.

12045629_10153078104311759_4931568748255620501_o   nnamdiagum3_34734700

Agnum says — “New York’s rooftops are noted for their spectacular skyline views—but there’s so much more to them that most people never see. There are often lush, vibrant, amazing things in bloom, cultivated for their beauty, on those rooftops, known only to their privileged inhabitants. The collection is a cheeky nod to the beautiful secrets one may find, tucked away, just beneath the skyline.”

Karen Dang — Academy of Art University   Karen

With an avant-garde approach to design, Karen Dang is not afraid to use colors to set the tone for her collections.

12091338_10153078103871759_8224997834043862876_o   karendang3_00718900

Here is what Dang has to say on this collection — “I wanted to capture the controlled chaos and beauty seen in the works of Martin Klimas and Ori Gersht. My collection is inspired by Klimas’ series, ”FlowerVases” and Gersht’s “On Reflection”, capturing the events that take place with the explosion of flower and vase. My first look is more structured like the vase and the last look is free and crazy, capturing the image of the shattered flower.”

karendang_51289100   karendang1_84071100

Paige Meacham — Kent State University Paige

Meacham’s focus is on women’s designer ready-to-wear and outwear. Her love of textiles and fabric manipulation comes through in her designs where embroidery, smocking, quilting and screen-printing play a roll in Meacham’s signature style.

paigemeacham3_58369800

“My Collection is inspired by my last two years of traveling around Europe and Asia. I believe that traveling is way people form layers. All the places I have been, I noticed the mixture of organic structures and movements, with hard city building lines. This juxtaposition of similar building structures with the vastly different lifestyles all come together to create something beautiful: humanity”

paigemeacham_19131300

Leetal Platt — FIDM Leetal

Since 2014 Platt has received numerous awards and recognition for her designs including the 2015 Best in Show award at FIDM. Platt takes a fairly loose approach to sketching in order to accommodate for the varying responses to fabric behavior. The use of textiles, hardware and shape all come together to form Platt’s design point of view.

12038969_10153078104191759_7072092437347793013_o  leetalplatt2_13182400

Platt says — “My collection is inspired by the bouganvillea vine. I am particularly drawn to the colors of its flowers and the contrast between that and the stone and concrete walls the vines canvas. As the collection flows, I try to explore this concept of overgrowth over manmade surfaces, and the juxtaposition of organic textures laying beside the hard geometry of infrastructure, resulting in gowns with beautiful fabric manipulation, color, and silhouette.”

2014 Cannes Film Festival — Top Looks

The Cannes Film Festival has been in full force for days now. Check out my picks for the best looks, enjoy!

1D50F4E3    BLAKE LIVELY

Blake is making yet another appearance on one of my best dressed lists! At the Cannes, for the premier of Mr. Turner, he looked literally iridescent in this lace iridescent Chanel Couture creation. And in true matching accessory fashion, she is wearing shimmering white heels by Sophia Webster.

"Mr. Turner" Premiere - The 67th Annual Cannes Film Festival

Great angle for a shot of the stunning pieces of Lorraine Schwartz jewelry Blake is donning, such as these flower-shaped earrings!

cate-blanchett-290  CATE BLANCHETT

Cate makes an odd combination of angelic and Greek goddess work and she does so in this gray Valentino gown with silver embroidery, feathered collar, and capped sleeves. I’m assuming her few pieces of jewelry are by Chopard as she was attending and presenting at the Chopard Trophy event.

Cate Blanchett

Cate is making high fashion marks all over the place while attending the Cannes festival so I had to showcase another look of hers for my best dressed list. While attending the Vanity Fair & Armani party she again looked quite angelic and sweet in this golden Giorgio Armani Prive dress with lace and embroidery details.

051414-cannes-red-carpet-10-567

PAZ VEGA

Ankle-cut dresses seem to be quite the tend on the Cannes red carpet and Paz’s embellished look certainly doesn’t disappoint. She looks slim, trim, & fit in this Elie Saab (part of the Spring 2014 collection) midi dress with beading and floral detailing at the bodice. She accessorized her look with Chopard diamonds and nude Christian Louboutin pumps.

051414-cannes-red-carpet-2-567Paz, like Cate, is quite deserving of a 2nd nod on my best dressed list. While at the Cannes Festival, stars are able to mix it up fashion-wise; they can go chic and minimal for their day looks, and then drastically switch it up for the night’s red carpet by going full on glam. Paz has done just that and so for her day look she rocks a simplistically minimalistic navy Zuhair Murad dress with lace detailing cut-outs down the side. For this look, she accessorized this time with magenta Christian Louboutins and fine Chanel jewelry.

jane-fonda-290      JANE FONDA

Fierce and on fire with a bold red ensemble is Jane, wearing a beaded Elie Saab look with a cinched waist, sheer sleeves, and decolletage. And her bold red choices continue with her accessories — rubellite drop earrings from Chopard’s Temptations Collection, red Jimmy Choo shoes, and a red & black Gucci clutch.

051414-cannes-red-carpet-7-567                             KENDALL JENNER

Kendall looks sleek, sophisticated, and seriously stylish in this black and white Chanel piece, which also boasts the ever-popular ankle-cut trend for the Cannes red carpet, but also 4 straps, and a printed raw-edged bodice. She paired with her look black Stuart Weitzman heels and a great deal of diamond Chopard jewelry — earrings, rings, and a cuff.

freida-pinto-eva-longoria-saint-laurent-cannes-premiere-03

EVA LONGORIA — Eva is another lovely lady gracing my best dressed list twice for the Cannes Festival. For her 1st look, she is wearing an elegant fitted white Gabriela Cadena gown, with a train.

freida-pinto-eva-longoria-saint-laurent-cannes-premiere-04

Just for a closer look, take a glance at Eva’s exquisite choices for jewelry all from Damiani.

freida-pinto-eva-longoria-saint-laurent-cannes-premiere-05

051614-cannes-adds-5-567For Eva’s 2nd look, she went very lingerie-esque with a pale peach custom gown, again from Gabriela Cadena. This time though, she donned earrings from Martin Katz.

eva-longoria-290

elizabeth-olsen-350x700

HONORABLE MENTION — ELIZABETH OLSEN

This is not the Cannes or the Billboards, but Elizabeth just looked too amazing in this crystal-embellished cascading blue gown by Elie Saab and from the designer’s Fall 2013 collection. Coordinated quite well with her look are Christian Louboutin navy sandal heels and diamond Piaget drop earrings.

Best Dressed at the 2014 Oscars — Lots of Silver, Shimmer, & Sparkles!!

The 2014 Oscars were spectacular. And alongside a great show were also some superb red carpet looks. Let’s take a look at a few of my faves!

57a0e420-a267-11e3-aedd-29869916a74d_NaomiWatts

NAOMI WATTS

Naomi I feel will always be on my best dressed lists. She just knows how to pick stunning dresses & how to always look fabulous in them. And this short-sleeved beaded white gown by Calvin Klein 100% proves this. The back slit perfectly showcases her black CK sandal heels. A few more perfectly matching accessories are the exquisite diamond jewelry & metallic two-toned clutch from Bulgari.

1393816373_jenna-dewan-tatum-560_640

JENNA DEWAN-TATUMThere were a lot of trends at the 2014 Oscars and Jenna seemed to fit the bill for one that is all over my best dressed list — soft hues with some shimmer — taupes, greys, off-white, etc! This Reem Acra gown is breathtaking, everything from the shimmery sheer bodice to the exaggerated skirt. Love it!

1393800296_maria-menounos-560_640                               maria-menounos-3-290MARIA MENOUNOSMaria is another who is often found on my best dressed lists and it’s because she has some great style. Take for instance, this sparkly silver capped sleeved gown with a fitted bodice & flowing train by Johanna Johnson. But Maria knows the look doesn’t stop with the gown; you have to complete it with some fabulous accessories. And here, she does just that with matching ashlyn’d clutch & subtle diamond jewelry — Jack Vartanian earrings, & Dove, Demarco, & Le Vian rings.

1393798918_giuliana-rancic-560_640

GIULIANA RANCICGiuliana looks like a princess in her off-white/grey Paolo Sebastian gown with a beaded bodice and taupe tulle skirt. And of course every princess needs a little extra frosting so she added some touches of diamond jewels from Forevermark.

8020e020-a26d-11e3-aacd-1ff334314e3f_EmmaWatson

EMMA WATSON

Some might have thought Emma played it safe, but I disagree! This black & shimmered grey gown by Vera Wang was what I call simplicity at its finest, minimally chic. Not every gown needs bells & whistles to be stunning! Emma played up her look a bit with many accessories — Anita Ko ear cuff, Chanel bow ring, Repossi iliac custom rings, Bouchoron upper knuckle-ring, Solange hoop earrings & triple-side diamond rings, Jessica McCormack star hair pins, & a shiny silver Anya Hindmarch clutch.

emma-watson-6-435

oscars-amy-adams-gucci-h724

AMY ADAMSAmy was another who went with a simple, yet elegant and exquisite look for the evening with her custom Gucci navy silk crepe tuxedo-inspired gown. Going with the trend of minimalism, are just a few touches of accessory sparkle, with that of Tiffany jewelry. We also can’t overlook this lovely up-do, which was styled by Renato Campora for Kerastase. The combo of Kerastase mousse, gel, & hairspray all went into creating this sculpted French twist.

03c887b0-a26f-11e3-a16f-a394e4559bf0_JenniferGarner              JENNIFER GARNER

Jennifer went with a bit of old-school Hollywood glam in this silvery shimmered tiered fringe gown by Oscar de la Renta. The matching silver clutch was also by Oscar de la Renta. There is more silver, just a hint/peek, from the bottom of the gown and those are Brian Atwood platforms. Finally, for a few touches of silver & diamond jewelry, we can look to Forevermark for doing another wonderful job in completing this glamorous look.

1393799428_tara-lipinski-560_640

TARA LIPINSKIYes, that is correct, Tara is on my best dressed list and yes, we are still at the Oscars, not the Olympics. Tara seems to be right at home on the red carpet & I’m sure my best dressed list is not the only one she made. How could she not in this flowing white & silver floral strapless gown by Rani Zakhem. I mean, it’s just amazing and it’s perfectly paired with a silvery shimmered Swarovski clutch.

158_2694_350361x5413MARGOT ROBBIEI started watching the Oscars before I looked at all of the red carpet photos and I kept wondering, where was Margot!! I now see why I kept missing her, no more blonde, now she’s a beautiful brunette — playing on my team now, lol!! But gorgeous locks aside, I have to say how much I adore this fitted black gown from Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. It might appear to be a little laid back, but the shimmered bodice is a great detail, but so to is the wrap-around bow back detail. I love back details on a dress!!

oscars-charlize-theron-h724      CHARLIZE THERON

Charlize’s structured black Dior gown, with illusion straps, is dramatic risk-taking at it’s best, for me. The partially sheer train, the structured bodice, and the spot-on fit, are all fantastically on point for me. It’s also a dramatic detail to have sole focus on one major piece of jewelry, the 31-carat Harry Winston cluster diamond pendant, STUNNING! Charlize’s beauty look was the exact opposite and was not dramatic nor overdone, but rather subtle and conservative. Her make-up stylist Pati Dubroff for Dior Beauty did a beautiful job with I’m sure many Dior products, including the Dior addict fluid stick in Frisson.

5e21dc30-a269-11e3-938b-0d354453d0c7_AshleyWagner

ASHLEY WAGNERYes, still at the Oscars, not the Olympics, but how odd that 2 figure skaters are making my best dressed list, and Ashley is the other one! I guess being able to pick stylish outfits for figure skating lends a hand to picking stylish gowns for red carpet events! This is a lovely gold sequined look from Mark Bouwer. Hot red lip, side-swept locks with a hint of retro-glam, yea, Ashley seems right at home!

oscars-red-carpet-08

KELLY OSBOURNEKelly looks quite fitting in this ironically fitted white Badgley Mischka gown with golden shimmered overlay. The golden accessories continue & still look just as great with a Judith Leiber clutch and pieces from Solange for LoveGold.

b58975b0-a268-11e3-a16f-a394e4559bf0_KarenO

KAREN O.

I can’t lie! What actually caught my eye first with this look was the stunning Rau Wolf clutch, LOVE!! But I can’t overlook the just as stunning fitted black gown by Camilla Staerk, complete with a deep V-neck and diamond encrusted pendant. The other diamond touches are some wonderful pieces by Forevermark. Karen, great job my dear, you look lovely!!

158_2699_350

ZAC EFRONI always try to include some dapper looking guys on my best dressed lists and so my 1st of 2 is Zac! He looks very handsome in his complete tuxe look, shirt & tie included, all by Calvin Klein. His shiny black dress shoes are from Johnson Murphy. And you can see just a peek from his 1967 rose gold vintage Rolex from Wanna Buy a Watch?

oscars-red-carpet-0686th Annual Academy Awards - ArrivalsMICHAEL B. JORDAN —  And last but not least, there is young Michael, who looks great in this black Givenchy tuxe & embellished dress shoes. We can also see a sneak of his matching Piaget watch. He alongside many of the ladies, went with some extra sparkle and is wearing Forevermark earrings & Gentleman Collection by Dave Thomas for Jason of Beverly Hills collar detail work.
