Carlos Campos & His Modern Cowboy

Carlos and Models

So for Agentry PR & Cadillac’s NY Menswear Day, this is # 2 of 7, Carlos Campos & his Fall 2014 presentation. This collection is inspired by “the rugged romanticism of the Gaucho, reinterpreted for the modern world.” The inspiration is all about the vast Pampas of South America. In this region, generations of strong, honest, & silent men on horses tamed their lands. They were immortalized in Guiraldes poems and are now part of the story told thru this collection.

Campos says, “This season, I set out to imagine the cowboy of tomorrow: a modern take on the masculine icon of the Gaucho, influenced by the wonders of future fantasy, the colors of deep space, and the precision of uniform dress.” These elements and concepts can certainly be seen throughout this collection, from the cuts of the blazers to the imaginative prints.

Carlos dressing model          DSC00239         DSC00240The vivid geometric prints, which are utilized on ultra-soft synthetic textiles, are certainly eye-catching. But one can’t overlook the immaculate outerwear in this collection – the poncho-inspired sweatshirts, wool trenches, & leathers — and they take shape with innovative lines & spacious silhouettes. The collection is about creating a modern take and updating a classic South American style, creating a modern cowboy, and Campos’ mission is accomplished!

Carlos Campos Cover shotCampos is known for his subtle design cues & tailoring and this season his top-notch skills are no different! His talented eye for the fall can be seen in his streamlined color palette of navy and white, and the feature of unique prints, inspired by the Gaucho’s trusty horse, artfully placed on wovens and shirting. Campos adds, “Through the interplay of lines, colors, and construction I want to communicate a rugged and modern look for the Gaucho riding on the Pampa of tomorrow.”

I always look for versatility in a collection, an ability to mix & match and for that, you need lots of separates. Carlos had done a phenomenal job with that and you can see that so many of these pieces would work well with a wide variety of other pieces within the collection.

Ernest Alexander Men — Get Ready, It’s the Big Race Day!

6852709857_1613087ae0                                     DSC00326

There are many great menswear posts coming up on Fashion Nexus! This is all thanks to Agentry PR & Cadillac who put together 7 menswear presentations for the Fall/Winter 2014 season, aka New York Menswear Day/NYMD. First up, the classic & tailored menswear brand Ernest Alexander!! Since Cadillac was the presenting sponsor of this event, they partnered up with 3 designers, Ernest Alexander as one, to wrap with a custom print a 2014 Cadillac ELR. This is pictured above, snow & all, since precipitation was the fashion accessory for NYFW 2014!

Ernest Alexander is certainly known for classic designs & creations. Their collections often encompass tailored suits coupled with complimentary separates, including accessories, such as flight or canvas bags. Well this Fall 2014 collection is no different thanks to the brand’s designer & founder, Ernest Sabine.

DSC00321The collection draws inspiration from board track racing, which is an early motorcycle sport devoted to speed & danger! The individual looks are reflections of a time when racers would incorporate heavy wools & leathers into their race day outfits. Racers were always impeccably dressed, woven shirts worn under sweaters & then paired with classic chinos. This collection takes elements from this traditional uniform and gives it a modern or updated take.

DSC00324There are a lot of bold & statement-making pieces in this collection, such as the outerwear. There is the lambskin leather racing jackets, shearling collared flight jacket, & a shawl collar wool coat. Another great aspect to this collection, which is always front & center for the brand, is VERSATILITY. There are a lot of medium to heavy weight wools, which are used in the blazers & trousers to help create mix & match separates. The wool trousers can also be paired with the many classic woven shirts & wool vests.

DSC00306The color palette & textiles for this collection are outerwear pieces that offer a combo of soft olives & greys, which are then complemented with rich brown, black, & olive leathers. On top of masculine & dark colors, we also see pops of blue, houndstooth, plaid, and wool. The collection would not be complete without a few signature updated travel bags & accessories, which are constructed from leather & wax cotton (to create a glistening sheen). Updated features include new front pockets & the glossy finishes.

DSC00310        DSC00309       DSC00315I love attending menswear presentations, just as much as the ones for womenswear; and no, it’s not just because of the male models! But I really enjoy seeing the highly talented craft & skill that goes into these pieces, the thoughts behind it; there is always a great story and Ernest Alexander knows how to tell one thru their presentations! Here are just a few of my fave looks from the collection with their descriptions:

index                                                                    Charlotte Ronson Fall / Winter 2014 Presentation

Okay so I don’t mean “bad” like going on a crime spree, more like “bad” with an edgier & risk-taking vibe! There are some killer looks in this collection for a girl who is not afraid to dress daringly, who can throw caution to the wind. This is a girl who for Fall/Winter 2014 is letting her guard down and looking hot & high-fashion while doing it!

Erin Fetherston’s “Charmed” Collection Goes Back in Time

Fetherston-RF14-2790Back in time that is to finding inspiration from the legendary Barbizon Hotel, which was a partial residential building, but also a charm school. It was home to timeless beauties such as Grace Kelly, Cybill Shepard, & Edith Bouvier Beale. So Erin’s POV for Autumn/Winter 2014 is all about refinement, femininity, charm, and old-school glamour! As she says, “A charmed life awaits, we need only dress the part!”

4_nocrop_w1800_h1330Left to right, the front 4 looks: (1) “Charmed, I’m Sure” Mohair black Sweater over Black Ponte dress w/ Horse Hair hem; (2) Chartreuse Botanical lace gown; (3) Rose Garden Print Dress; (4) Evergreen Jacquard off-the-shoulder cocktail dress

Erin Fetherston certainly has a signature touch, but this collection amps it up to the next level by using decadent jacquards, delicate laces, & rich textures. It is truly the perfect blend of lady-like elegance & chic sophistication.

Look_17

Blossom embroidered organza dress w/ black tiered flounce hem

There are a few stunning gowns that also grace this collection and are rendered in lush velvet devores & romantic floral motifs with gilded touches. The floral prints are adorned with neoprene & silk ottoman, which add that modern flare or punch to this very romantic palette of wintery pastels & dazzling hues of emerald, sapphire, & ruby! The colors are stunning and are an intriguing take for the fall, rich & deep enough for the fall, but still with a light and airy feel.

Erin is certainly a go-to in the fashion industry for the perfectly feminine cocktail dress and there are plenty to choose from here — defined with statement-making skirts. It’s a wide range — sleek & slim to flirty & flared! The options are perfect for a variety of occasions — date night, drinks with the girls, or an evening dinner event.

But the collection is not all dresses, there are separates. The separates offer a bit of magic, illusions, as seen with cleverly constructed pop-over tops, exquisitely embellished chiffon tees, which are then adjoined by bell & ball skirts.

Look_19

I haven’t written a full feature on Erin before, even though I named her as best dressed at the 2013 CFDA Awards, which she donned one of her own creations so here is some background. She attended Parsons Paris to study fashion design. In 2005, she presented her label during the Paris haute couture shows. And from this came the signature Fetherston style — feminine, whimsical, & romantic sensibility. In 2007 Erin moved to NYC. She has had several fashion honors — 2007 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award, a finalist for the 2007 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, & in 2009 was inducted as a member of the CFDA.

ef            DSC00355              1_nocrop_w1800_h1330Erin has been very fortunate to have received a lot of great press over the years. And this year’s presentation was no exception as there were plenty of big names in attendance — renown style & beauty expert Mary Alice Stephenson, Cobra Starship frontman Gabriel Saporta, The Voice 2nd place contestant Jacquie Lee, Fashion Director and Senior Vice President of Neiman Marcus Ken Downing, Teen Vogue Styles Features Director Andrew Bevan, casting director Natalie Joos, Sr. Fashion News Director for Teen Vogue Jane Keltner de Valle, & model Natalie Suarez.

UTG Designers Sink Their Teeth into an Unconventional Materials Challenge!

vampire_fangs_by_Dodo91[1]                                     UTG01-ep4-episode3

This week started off with a spooky setting — Vampire World, cemetery vibe, eery fog & all! Tim & the mentors were joined this week by Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland to help direct the designers for this week’s challenge. Sarah is also in the upcoming flick, Vampire Academy, which was perfectly fitting for this week. After showing the trailer, the designers were told to take inspiration from it, the setting, etc to create their looks. The graveyard set-up was filled with a variety of fabrics, but also unconventional materials. So yes, this week was all about the ever-popular unconventional looks, but the designers could use fabric as well. They had 10 minutes to gather as much unconventional items as they wanted and up to 5 bolts of fabrics.

UTG01-ep4-episode5

UTG01-ep4-episode31

There was one trip & fall (Nicholas) and some confusion with piles mixing up, but then it was off to the workroom. Before the mentors visited the designers, Tim took a moment to chat with them. Nick saw he needed to be more hands off. Mondo was told to not just provide emotional support, but also add in some hard core critical analysis. Tim told Anya to stay/keep on course. She too thought with having 2 designers in the top last week that she was good to go. As we will later see, these mentors now know they should never rest on their laurels!

I was very impressed by both Nick & Mondo this week with their mentoring changes. Mondo really became so hands on and was giving great direction. And this immensely paid off as he had 2 designers in the top and one was named the winner! Nick also had a good week; he was so much more hands off and really started to find that mentoring balance. I have to give him kudos as well for dealing with wacky Isabelle, I mean that is some patience he is practicing! I think she is not able to listen to anyone; she only wants to do what she wants to do. And if I have to see her jump while she is trying to get her point across, like she is 5 years old or something, I might flip, haha!

UTG01-ep4-episode33As far as Anya goes I really think I was right with my previous thoughts on her. I’m just not sure about her as a mentor. I couldn’t tell you one thing that she said or did last week that aided her having 2 in the top. And then this week, we saw that go all wrong! Shan kind of played it safe this week and didn’t really use a lot of unconventional materials. And this is exactly what we saw with both Brady & Nicholas, playing it safe and not really embracing the challenge. Anya needs to step it up if she wants to keep up with Nick & Mondo! And with Brady out, I think Blake is her golden ticket, but again I have to question how much is her mentoring really helping him?? Guess we shall have to wait & see!

UTG01-ep4-episode21It was finally the day of the runway — we saw Oscar having just one of his generous moments this week; he and Nicholas’ model both helped Nick cover his chain-links. We then saw another disobedient and disrespectful moment from Isabelle. She 1st declared she was changing some of the shape with her netting around her dress. Then Tim had to rush her out of the workroom, AGAIN! Then AGAIN, he had to raise his voice at her to get her to stop sewing while waiting to head down to the runway. She is clearly trying to break rules when she can and just hoping because she comes off as eccentric/loopy that maybe she can get by with it. And if next week’s scenes are any indicator, it’s clear she is going to keep doing this, AWKWARD!

The judging panel had 2 guest judges this week. Designer Trina Turk was filling in for Rachel Roy. And then another star from the upcoming Vampire Academy, Zoey Deutch, was also on board to critique the vampire-y inspirations this week! So who sunk their teeth into this week’s challenge with a savory outcome and who bit off more than they could chew?!?

UTG01-ep4-episode42

UTG01-ep4-episode41There was a top & bottom 3 so here are some tidbits from the middle. Blake did another great structured LBD. To me this was what, as you will see further down, Isabelle just didn’t do well at all. There has to be thought and design behind netting, not just looping it around your garment. Shout-out to Benefit Cosmetics here for the great smoky eye and also to BlowPro for the chic up-do! Also, you can see Sam’s fun plaid dress so great work to both of these guys!

utg-bs-ep4-sketch                    utg-sd-ep4-sketchI felt like we didn’t see Natalia all episode, but she also had a great look and I can’t wait to see more from her in the coming weeks, hopefully! Shan’s look to me was safe, but shout-out to the teams who helped with the rest of the look — another great smoky eye from Benefit Cosmetics, chic ponytail from BlowPro, and also, I love the accessory details here from Francesca’s.

Natalia                     utg-sko-ep4-sketchAnd then WOW, where was Stephanie all episode?? I mean if this isn’t a comeback I don’t know what it is. From that hot mess prom dress gone wrong last week to this very chic white look this week, I mean WOW! She paid so much attention to making a great fit here and really to the details. Welcome to the competition Stephanie! Shout-out again to Benefit Cosmetics, great job this week and I love the bold red lip here!

utg-so-ep4-sketchTim also awarded a special prize this week before announcing the top & bottom. Benefit Cosmetics will randomly award an extra $1000 to a designer for giving a boosted performance or something like that. But this week, that lucky winner was Oscar and I think this was well deserved. He created a top 3 look, helped Nicholas, and apparently swept the workroom?? I mean, what a great guy!

3 OSCARSince we are on Oscar, let’s start with the top 3. Oscar’s top 3 placement was well deserved. I was surprised he was not top 2, but nonetheless, JOB WELL DONE! His story was about a Jewish vampire and inspiration drawn from the blood. You can see all of that here from the splattered red bodice to the Yamaka. I love seeing something different and a jumpsuit counts as that! Great accessories also this week, with Francesca’s, love the sheer black booties & perfect little black clutch!!

Asha took that top 2 coveted spot and I wasn’t surprised she was in the Top 3. As Zoey mentioned, I didn’t care for the purple pieces matched with the red feathered, or I guess hay-ed dress. It reminded me of ladies who are in that Red Hat Society or something like that where they pair red & purple all the time. I wasn’t flipping over that, but I think the red undergarment was SPOT ON! It was all very fitting for her Voodoo Priestess!

UTG01-ep4-episode36And then finally, the winner this week, MICHELLE!! I was so excited for her comeback this week. I mean this was not just coming back, but busting thru a wall or something crazy like that! The print was so stunningly eye-catching. And I disagreed with Zanna and loved the pairing with the neckline adorned branches and baby’s breath. There was great construction, fit, flare, and structure. This look had it all, but without going in too many different directions. LOVE!

utg-mu-ep4-sketch

With the bottom I was utterly disappointed that Isabelle wasn’t at least in the bottom 2. I mean I knew she wasn’t going anywhere because we hadn’t seen her big scene yet, which has been in previews before. But her look was really just a navy blue tube dress with some red netting tossed around it. Nothing special, no design, just plain, crazy, wacky-style Isabelle. It was mentioned there was at least some risk, but hey, risks should not always be rewarded!

UTG01-ep4-episode38Now to my sadder part because we have to say bye to Brady this week!! Ahhhh, so hard to write. I think Brady is just an awesomely nice guy and great designer. He has a great vision and style, but I think Anya messed that up this week. She kept talking about Junior this & Junior that, but there is a difference between Junior and street-style or street-wear or even just designing with a youthful thought in mind. Brady’s sparkled dress this week was a bit safe, but still him and was definitely wearable. But matching it with the navy moto blazer just made it too disjointed.

UTG104-Brady-Lange-Losing-Look-Front-1-900x1350(shout-out, great side swept-do from BlowPro!!)

We then go to Nicholas’s yawn-worthy brown knee-length dress with the chain detail, but it wasn’t thrilling. It was too monochromatic. If the chain or dress was a different color, it would have worked better. It was also just too basic, too simple; it was just a sheath dress, nothing special, again, where is the design aspect?? And then to top it all off, so Nicholas & Brady comprised the bottom 2. The judges decided to let Anya pick who to send home?? I mean, I’m not sure about her mentoring abilities, but now she gets to play master with someone’s future. She made the wrong decision. I mean really Isabelle should have gone home for me this week, but Brady leaving is a travesty! I’m trying to give her a little leeway, but this week, NOPE, just can’t do it!

UTG01-ep4-episode37

I think about the entire look — outfit to shoes to of course, my handbag! I assume most women also do this. For my day looks I generally use a purse. But at night, when I’m going out for drinks or dinner, or if I just don’t want to carry a heavy purse, I need that perfect clutch!

The beauty & brains behind ashlyn’d were too in search of the perfect evening bags and clutches. The ladies felt there was a lack of unique and affordable options in the marketplace. And with that, the brand was launched, almost a year ago, January 2013. Meet the ashlyn’d team:

The overall concepts behind the brand are to “expect the unexpected” and to create bags that are unique and whimsical in nature. Also within the various collections are nature-oriented or inspired themes. With this concept, the idea was to create clutches that looked like marble, granite, wood, etc. Acrylics and exotic woods with custom finishes were used to achieve these looks. During this process, Ashlee came up with the idea of creating a “snow-globe” effect, using translucent acrylic filled with colored sand that floated. This later led to entire collection of bags filled with pearls, crystals, and much more. All of these concepts & processes lead to clutches that are both very fashionable and of course, unique! The whole manufacturing process is completed in Los Angeles, even the artwork, which is coordinated with LA based artists. Each bag is made with key features that every woman will appreciate — space & affordability. Each clutch has the room to fit all your necessities — phone, lipstick, credit card, ID, and much more! It was also very important to the ashlyn’d team that the clutches are reasonably priced. Big designer brand clutches, very similar to ashlyn’d, can run you anywhere from $500 to quadruple digits. The range for ashlyn’d clutches are mid $300s – mid $400s.

UTG Designers Present Their Take on Red Carpet Fashion

The Under the Gunn designers for this week took on red carpet creations, which is quite fitting since we are in the midst of all the red carpet glitz & glam (Grammy’s, Golden Globes, etc.),. The designers started off the episode with a Hollywood bus tour from Starline to help provide some Hollywood glamour inspiration for their red carpet look. UTG judge & Sr. Fashion Editor of Marie Claire Zanna Roberts-Rossi was alongside Tim Gunn this week to hand out the designers marching orders.

HollywoodTour_busZanna encouraged the designers to make their challenge look dynamic and eye-catching. Why? Well the winning look this week would at some point be worn by an unknown celeb (kind of vague?) and pics of the celeb would be put in Marie Claire. A few other bits of general information for this week’s episode — we saw the designers would be living it up this season in LA at the Apex Apartments. Of course we knew this was going to be a tough challenge with only 1 day to complete the look!! And with that the designers were off to Mood with a $200 budget.

I wonder if this season in every episode we are going to have a designer who flagrantly violates the rules?? Last week it was Isabelle in the workroom/sewing room and this week it was Camila at Mood. All of the designers were checked out, in line, or ready to go all while Camila was still gathering and cutting fabrics. Tim has had to raise his voice now twice though at certain designers so I say — LET’S GET IT TOGETHER!!

The designers were then back to the workroom to start off a day of chaos & craziness! Tim came by to first check on the mentors and with that let’s go ahead and get all the Nick drama out this week. So Tim took notice of Nick’s mentoring style very early on this week — from the bus to the workroom. The mentors however didn’t go to Mood and that made sense, probably too many cooks in the kitchen! But Tim had some firm words too for Nick this week. We saw Nick helping sketch, working with patterns, draping muslin, etc. It starts the debate of how much mentoring is too much?

Hollywood_MondoNickAnyaAnya & Mondo certainly had a bit more of a laid back approach. But you have to wonder how well does that work out since Mondo had 2 designers in the bottom this week? I definitely think there needs to be a balance though, a line. You have to help, but not give the answers. I think Nick, being a teacher and all, is struggling a bit with the balance. But, I think if he just took a few steps back he can definitely MAKE IT WORK! Mondo however, I think could serve to take 1 step forward. He could stand to be a bit more involved. I’m still not sure about Anya’s mentoring. I just felt her advice was so vague and she too could amp it up a bit. But hey, mentoring is not easy and it’s a learning curve so I’m eager to see how each progresses.

Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Mondo-Designers                                     Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Nick-DesignersThis show has a bit of an odd balance though, lots going on. There is focus on the mentors & that mentoring aspect, but the focus has to be on the designers, as well. It was hard this week because there were designers I felt we didn’t even see until their models hit the runway — Asha, Oscar, even Brady. Speaking of models, so funny watching their 1st fittings this week and Shan was certainly in for a large surprise, large breasts on his model that is!

Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Anya-DesignersIt was then finally the day of the runway and what do we see, another designer choosing to not go to the bathroom?? So funny and yes, I had to mention this. While Isabelle was at Mood they aired her saying she had to really go, but ultimately decided to wait. Then again, on the day of the runway, Shan was aired saying he had to go, but again, would hold it! Time for the runway though and Tim announced 1 more fun surprise for this week and the rest of the season. The winning designer each week would receive $5,000, WOW! This is a nice treat just in the event you win a couple of challenges, but don’t win the show; at least you would walk away with something.

UTG01-ep3-episode3The judges (celeb stylist Jen Rade, designer Rachel Roy, & fashion editor Zanna) only discussed 6 looks this week — a top & bottom 3. Thus, not much attention to the rest, which left a lot of designers lost in translation. I would say to Nicholas & Asha, congrats on being safe this week, but there is definitely still some room for improvement!

utg-nk-ep3-sketch                         utg-ad-ep3-sketch

  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — Love these black strapped heels on Asha’s model!

I love Brady’s girl and I could see a young hot celeb like Miley or Zendaya rocking that look. My only thought would be to maybe not do the full print on both pieces, maybe use a solid top or bottom with the print? But I can’t wait to see more! It’s clear though that we were seeing creations for a wide range of red carpets, going from Brady’s casual street style to full on glitz & glam with Natalia or Oscar, whose looks I also liked — great fit, gorgeous lines, striking looks. Let’s look at the top 3 for this week now!

utg-bl-ep3-sketch

  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — love the purple metallic shoes!
  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — One of my fave ways to wear my own hair, the side braided ponytail

utg-rr-ep3-nf-f_0                 utg-rr-ep3-nf-b_1                 utg-rr-ep3-ogl-b_0

  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — Both blondes, great job on the hair, retroglam & modern chic!
  • BENEFIT COSMETICS SHOUTOUT — Love the pop of red on the lip w/ Natalia’s model & the makeup for Oscar’s, it’s just so fresh & clean, simply beautiful & stunning!
  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — Oscar’s model, the gold triangle earrings, perfect touch!

utg-ogl-ep3-sketchI’m sure it was tough to judge for the top 3 this week. I was surprised that this was the top 3; I was sure Natalia, Oscar, or Brady, at least one, would be there. But it’s clear the judges went for the more risky or daring looks this week, perhaps those a bit more unique. Shan’s look was definitely one to push the boundaries. I mean, those boobs could have easily fallen out! I wasn’t a fan of this look, but it was something different. The print was just a bit too much for me and a little too much boob-age. But the back of the blazer was a surprising touch with an open back and I did like that element!

utg-sko-ep3-sketchBlake was a surprise for me this week, but ultimately it made sense. I completely agreed with the judges. We see it all throughout red carpet season, these bold, different, and unique looks — reference J.Law pretty much any time so far this red carpet season! People either really love it or really hate it. The look could be on Glamour Mag’s best dressed or on E Fashion Police’s worst dressed list. The look was very soft, light, & airy.

utg-rr-ep3-bs-f

  • SHOUTOUTS ALL AROUND! — Blowpro w/ the sweeping updo; Francesca’s with the clear clutch; Benefit cosmetics with the clean look & nude lip!

I was still though so ecstatic for Sam this week! I’ve been searching myself for an amazing jumpsuit for fashion week and it’s so funny that is what he designed for this week! I thought this look was fantastically phenomenal. It would work wonders on a wide variety of red carpets. The back was done so beautifully and many women could wear this. If I could have any wish for it though, I might would want the neckline a bit deeper, maybe steal some boobage showing from Shan’s look!?! One thing I know is I can’t wait to see more!

utg-rr-ep3-sd-f

  • Francesca’s — again, great job with the accessories — the necklace & open-toed booties!!

Now to the more depressing side of the show — the bottom 3, which was so weird this week because usually they send the designer home last, but the announcement this week was reversed? Let’s begin with Michelle who even though was in the bottom, I knew she was not going home. I did agree with Tim and his comment about the hoo-hah focal point diamond, but Michelle did have some great elements this week. They just didn’t all come together in such a short time. I loved the popping red color and I thought the fit was great, but to me it was just a little to basic. I’m not counting this gal out yet though!

UTG103-Michelle-Uberreste-Look-Front

  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — love the structured ponytail!

I completely agree with the remainder of the bottom 3. I was a bit surprised though that Camila was the one to go, but it wasn’t undeserving. This look was just far too basic and what she tried to make special with the back of the dress really just looked sloppy. The top part being sheer would have been far more sufficient and efficient than the draping bow-looking thing down the back. If she is that unsure of the fabrics and the host of other excuses she gave then maybe she is not quite ready for a show of this caliber yet.

utg-rr-ep3-cc-b                                                                                               UTG103-Camila-Castillo-Losing-Look-Front-900x1350And finally, there was Stephanie. I kind of thought she was heading home. I hated seeing again this god awful green color. The dress really just looked tortured. It was too short and looked like prom gone wrong. When the mentor’s teams were formed I really thought Stephanie being selected was a surprise. If she can’t get it together next week I think it’s safe to say I was right!

Celebs Buying Their Own Red Carpet Gowns — A Scandal??

NO!! I THINK NOT!

So we are in the midst of red carpet season — The Grammy’s, Golden Globes, SAG Awards & with the Oscar’s still to come. Outside of best & worst dressed lists there was one other topic that made some headlines recently — Hayden Panettiere buying her own dress for the Golden Globes. To me this sounds like “Wow, who cares, big deal!” I was surprised it was even discussed and thankfully that all seems to have subsided, I imagine because the whole issue was kind of pointless. But since it was discussed, I now have time to add in my 2 cents so here goes!

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - ArrivalsSo Hayden is a huge fan of designer Tom Ford. The deal with red carpets usually goes that a designer lends their gowns/dresses to a celeb to wear via their stylist; this even goes to the jewelry, the heels, and the clutch. Generally you will only see 1 designer look per red carpet. Although lately, I’ve seen a few doubles — Lena Dunham & Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen at the Golden Globes; Virginie Ledoyen & Chiara Ferragni in Alberta Ferretti at the Venice Film Festival; Selena Gomez & Shannon Bex (of Danity Kane) in Versace at the 2013 VMAs. And heck, when you get to the accessories you see Jimmy Choo heels, Lorraine Schwartz  or Harry Winston jewelry, and Edie Parker clutches all over the place! But so if Hayden wants to wear a Tom Ford dress and she has yet to have the opportunity to borrow one, it makes no logical sense why this is a bad thing.

index                                                                                 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - ArrivalsFirst off, Hayden didn’t do this intentionally or at least with any malice in mind. She loves a designer and wants to wear a piece from the designer. So she did what any other person in the world that could and would do — she bought a dress & wore it! She attempted the borrow method and it was not an option so she risked loss of status and having to wear a dress from last season just to show her support. And you can’t forget, she paid the big bucks, $10K to be exact!

Secondly, Mr. Ford didn’t seem all to bothered since he sent Panettiere flowers to thank her for the support, which she tweeted about. Even though, a point was made when Tom Ford’s reps said they didn’t “officially” dress the Nashville star. And Ford is known for wanting that fashion moment by usually only dressing 1 female per red carpet.

Bd84zozCMAADW0WBut how bad could it be to double up on that fashion moment? Naomi Watts was the lucky lottery winner for the Tom Ford look on the night of the Golden Globes and she certainly stunned. But it’s not like Hayden didn’t receive great comments as well. So now, Ford is getting even more recognition, and for what?? — exactly what he should want, his stunning designs and creations.

naomi-watts-2-290And yes, a designer is certainly about the creative process, but making money certainly fits into that equation too! For this situation, several parties are making money on it — the store and the designer. I think this older comment I found from “The Fashion Spot” is quite literally spot on! These dresses range from $5000 and even up to $30,000. Most gowns are on loan and so it leaves me to wonder who is buying these lavish gowns? I’m sure people are, but you have to think that number is very limited — someone with money and a place to wear it. Hayden’s dress was from last season and clearly still available so it’s not a bad thing for it to be purchased now. The longer it stays on the rack, the more money that is lost, DUH!

Kate Hudson recently discussed the issue of loaning gowns and about why she doesn’t purchase the ones she wears, simply put, it’s too expensive! Of course this was in no relation to this recent fashion “faux pas.” This again goes to show that the celebs & the Hollywood crowd are not buying these lavish gowns. So if a celeb wants to splurge once a year on a gown then perhaps the fashion world should encourage this rather than disc, shame, and pick fun at! Maybe that is why celebs haven’t done this too often before. But consider this, if it’s a big honor for a designer to loan you a dress, isn’t it just as big an honor for a person to spend $1000s on that designer’s dress?

o-KATE-HUDSON-570Also, it might be this big anointing feeling when a major designer wants you to wear their look, but you have to remember one thing, the celeb is very seldom given that dress. Yes, J.Law looks great in Dior, but she is not keeping all those dresses and that is the same for other designer/celeb partnerships — Taylor Schilling w/ Thakoon or Kristen Stewart with Balenciaga. I think if people weren’t worried about this backlash they might splurge once in awhile. Again, this boosts the economy and specifically to the fashion sector, no harm, no foul.

The major contention seems to be coming from fashion journalist Jim Shi and a tweet of his — “Hayden Panettiere BOUGHT her Tom Ford dress at RETAIL. Tsk tsk”, which is apparently the equivalent of “sorry, this seat is taken!” Although, I’ve yet to find another site or critic who was quite so harsh. It’s nice to see that most fashion critics and journalists get the logic here.

And is this all really unheard of? I didn’t go back to discover past celebs who’ve purchased items for the red carpet, but apparently Edie Falco also bought her Lanvin gown, which she too wore at the Golden Globes. Emma Roberts was also in Lanvin on the same night, but Edie’s purchase wasn’t discussed in any of the various articles on this fashion rule that was supposedly broken by Hayden, kind of odd??

Edie-Falco-GOlden-GLobes-20141I say go Hayden, go Edie, and go whomever else wants to treat themselves every once in awhile and wear what they want. If you don’t make that designer’s short list, to heck with it! No one should be made to feel that they are not worthy enough to wear a gown. If they are willing to go the distance in buying a gown, support that, don’t hate!

In the meantime, I can’t wait for fashion week and more red carpets!!
