Proj. Runway — Who Won $50K!!

Well it’s more like not just who, but which two! In the setup for this week, an overall $50,000 was awarded and yes, that is actually half of the cash prize the winner of PR receives. Of course the winner gets a host more of other prizes, but $50K is still a pretty hefty prize!

pr15-ep9-1

Tim met with the designers to provide all of the details and joining him in the workroom was Barbara Shipley, Sr. VP of Brand Integration from AARP. AARP was the challenge sponsor, and ultimately who awarded the prize. As part of the challenge, the designers would be creating a look for a very special client and this look would be a part of representing that client’s next chapter. The special client turned out to be for each designer a family member or friend.

pr15-ep9-13

The winning look would not only awarded $25K to the designer, but another $25K to the client. This I believe was the first 2-day challenge of the season. And with that, the designers were off to Mood with a $250 budget.

pr15-ep9-26

When designers typically work with real world clients to that of models, sometimes issues or drama arises. This time there was not much of that with the exception of Jenni and her mom as their seemed to be confusion on the direction of the look. I wondered during Tim’s critiques though if he was being a little extra hard on Erin and Dexter? It was clear he thought Cornelius should not have gone home, only then assuming Erin or Dexter should have. He certainly didn’t hold back on critiques!

pr15-ep9-24

I believe the biggest workroom issue of the week however was Nathalia and really biting off more than she could chew. This week’s guest judges were fashion and beauty trendsetter Olivia Culpo and co-founder of Birchbox, Katia Beauchamp (who also is on the new Lifetime show, Project Runway: Fashion Start-Up).

pr15-ep9-40

The safe designers of the week were Laurence, Cornelius, and Dexter. I pretty much agreed with this result, but Dexter would have been in my top 3. His look was a knockout and really fit his client well. I thought he gave his friend exactly what she wanted, while still ringing very true to his designer aesthetic.

pr15-ep9-ds-final

SHOUTOUTS — Sally Beauty for a gorgeous, chic straight look & JustFab, love these killer blue booties

The judges’ top three was Roberi, Mah-Jing, & Rik. All were very deserving, but my winning look was Roberi. I got why they chose Rik, but Roberi, just as Dexter did, stuck true to his designer POV, all while giving his client a very fashion-forward look. I thought Rik’s dress was super great as well, but I’m not sure I really would have known it was his work in the midst of some very strong designer aesthetics.

pr15-ep9-rp-final

Roberi’s choice of prints and the ability to mix them together was genius. The look was fun and the pops of color were spot on!

JUSTFAB SHOUTOUT — More cute heels!!

Rik was certainly deserving of accolades though. His dress was very cute, perfect for his mom, not about the bells and whistles, but rather conveying a story, with very intricate details. It was very much age appropriate, but didn’t come across as a mature, mumsy creation.

pr15-ep9-rv-final

SHOUTOUTS — Sally Beauty, love the hair & Mary Kay, love the bold red lip

Mah-Jing certainly stepped it up though this week. His look was bad-ass. I didn’t get the same vibe as the judges that his mom was really working the look. I kind of thought it was wearing her and not the other way around. Perhaps in the right setting, but Mah-Jing really did give her what she wanted and he designed the look beautifully.

pr15-ep9-mjw-final

The bottom 3 was Erin, Nathalia, and Jenni. All who have been in the bottom before and all who unfortunately had the worst 3 looks of the week. Erin was again saved from the bottom two. If I’m not mistaken, every time she has been in the bottom, she has escaped the bottom 2 — very interesting. I wonder if she can find her way back to the top. I’m not seeing much by the way of improvement or growth from her the past few weeks, and she really is doing the same coat over and over again. And with this being a 2-day challenge, I would have expected her dress to have looked way better since we know she can do a coat easily in a day, if even that.

pr15-ep9-er-final

JUSTFAB SHOUTOUT — Gorgeous killer heels!

Nathalia escaped elimination this week, I believe her ideas were her saving grace. She attempted to do a lot and pretty much each article of clothing was poorly constructed. Everything read too oversized. She listened to her mom and the idea was there, but not fully conceived with regard to execution. I wish her coat had been longer and more fitting. I didn’t love the concept of a bell-bottom pant either. Jenni has had some success in the top so I would have picked her to stay in this scenario, but with 2 friends making up the bottom, sadness was inevitable.

pr15-ep9-nj-final

SALLY BEAUTY SHOUTOUT — Lovely waves!

pr15-ep9-39

So yes, with that, Jenni was out this week. Her look too had some construction issues, but a more major issue here was this look was not at all suited for her mom. It read “Jenni” 100%, but there wasn’t any adaptability to the client. I really wouldn’t see her mom wearing this at any of the events she mentioned. Jenni does have a strong aesthetic, but in terms of it being expansive and having the ability to be molded to different occasions, I’m just not sure she is there yet.

pr15-ep9-jr-final

Proj. Runway & the Urban Jungle

pr15-ep7-4

As PR began this week, we saw the designers taking a ride on the Rip Ride RockIt rollercoaster. But no episode of PR is about fun & games. As the “8 hours earlier” caption came on the screen, we were transported back to the runway, where the designers were chatting with Heidi. Heidi informed the designers they were going to recharge their batteries a bit, as they looked restless, and doing so by heading to Universal Studios in Orlando.

pr15-ep7-1

There, the designers met up with Tim Gunn and Mike West, the Director of Design for Universal Creative Studio, recently creating “Skull Island: Reign of Kong.” Of course, the challenge instructions were then provided. The designers were to find inspiration from the theme park, the Skull Island jungle, and then create looks for the Urban Jungle, aka streetwear for NYC.

pr15-ep7-5

The designers sketched at the park and then headed back to NYC to hit up Mood with a $200 budget. It was then back to the workroom to begin this 1-day challenge. The designers faced normal hiccups this week, lots of doubts and frantic flurries to finish up on time.

pr15-ep7-6

Heidi announced at the start of the runway show that whomever won this week would hold the last immunity for the season. The guest judges for the streetwear runway were designer Rebecca Minkoff and actress Carly Chaikin.

pr15-ep7-26

The judges’ top 3 was a little confusing. Dexter I assume was on the top, but certainly didn’t get love from all 5 judges. This has happened before, and it always makes me wonder how nobody else received a higher score to make the top 3. There were certainly a couple of other good looks. I thought Rik and Jenni did some good work, very strong streetwear pieces.

pr15-ep7-rv-final

I didn’t mind that Dexter was in the top, it’s just if he is going to be there, let’s get mostly praise, not crazed arguments. I thought this was elevated streetwear, definitely something different. The shorts were very tight, and that was my main critique.

pr15-ep7-ds-final

JUSTFAB SHOUTOUT — Love these bright yellow heels!

The clear top 2 for the judges was between Nathalia and Laurence, ultimately with Laurence being selected as the winning designer. This was the right choice. Her jacket was fierce. Nathalia’s color palette was a little bland, so with Laurence, she at least had the great pop of color.

pr15-ep7-lb-final

Nathalia’s pieces were not all bad, despite the monotone color choices. I did appreciate that she made so many pieces and they all looked very well made. I wish she had instructed the model to take off the jacket on the runway because the top she made, it really had an interesting back. It would have added some dramatic flare to the whole look.

pr15-ep7-nj-final

JUSTFAB SHOUTOUT — Gorgeous earrings!

The bottom 3 consisted of Brik, Erin, & Cornelius. I really could have seen the bottom 2 going in all possible directions because they were pretty hard on all 3, but Erin escaped the bottom 2. She certainly was deserving of this bottom 3 placement. Last week, other looks could have ended up there over her. But here, it was a very different case. She really needs to start thinking of the challenge, and how to adapt her aesthetic a little better. So much time on this look made “0” sense. It makes one wonder in the next episode, will she get back to the top???

pr15-ep7-er-final

I really wasn’t sure who was going home between Cornelius & Brik. Both had faults, but it seems as if when one designer does too much versus one who does too little, the one who does too little goes home. Thankfully that was not the case this week and Cornelius was saved. I didn’t have a problem with his pants, but the top was not only too basic, it was poorly constructed.

pr15-ep7-co-final

SHOUTOUTS — SALLY BEAUTY & MARY KAYChic, sleek locks & a great pop of color on the lip!

This meant Brik was the one out and I had no problem with this. I have not been a fan of his work this season and kind of thought his elimination was long overdue. I agreed with pretty much all of what the judges said — mismatch of prints, it was too much, and there were some construction issues.

pr15-ep7-ba-final

SHOUTOUTS — SALLY BEAUTY, MARYKAY & JUSTFAB Love the heels, stunning beauty look, and this updo is beautiful!

Proj. Runway — Meet the Designers

So in this 1st episode of PR Season 15, besides learning that glitter is the herpes of the design world, we of course also met this season’s batch of new designers! We started with all of the designers meeting in a hall, sipping on some champagne, seeing that 2 designers already knew each other, and being introduced to one of the most unique laughs I ever heard. But as Heidi & Tim entered the room, we all knew it was time to MAKE IT WORK!

pr15-ep1-8

For this 1st challenge, it was very much like previous seasons in that each designer was expected to show their POV as a designer. But the shake-up was bringing in what is generally later on in a given season — the unconventional materials challenge. What were the unconventional materials? The spirit and vibe that the decorations in the meeting hall had created, would be the same materials the designers were to use in order to infuse spirit into their looks. And with that, the designers were off running around, making a total mess naturally. And my oh my, those poor flowers!! Chill-ax gents!

pr15-ep1-10

The designers were then off to the workroom to begin this 1-day challenge. Tim-time was a little fiesty, well at least with the discussion between Ian & Tim. Skipping to the end since Ian of course left this week, but wow, future Tim/Ian meetings would have been interesting!

pr15-ep1-34

As we came closer to the runway, we saw that JustFab was here for the accessory wall. And for all things GLAM, Mary Kay was on board for the makeup and Sally Beauty for hair. This first episode’s guest judge was The Today Show’s Savannah Guthrie.

pr15-ep1-55

The judges praised the 1st runway, but overall I saw a lot of safe designs. I saw too much by way of snooze-fests and crazy sleeves. Unconventional is hard, so I know the season will only get better! I saw a few designs which I think better occupied spaces in both the top & bottom, but for this 1st recap, I will focus on the judges’ top & bottom picks.

pr15-ep1-th-final

Of the judges’ picks for top 3, I preferred Tasha the most. I wouldn’t wear this look — it’s just not me. But I can clearly see this girl and for the right person, the could rock it! WERK!!

pr15-ep1-ds-final

Dexter’s look was a showpiece, but I was a bit surprised it made the top 3. This is not to say it was deserving to be in the bottom, but it read too big to me. The bodice segment was quite cool and hip though.

pr15-ep1-er-final

An even bigger surprise for this top 3 was Erin making it and then winning! This is not again to say her look was so bad, but I was quite in shock that all 4 judges just loved this look that much. I thought it came across a bit too costume-y, gimmicky.

pr15-ep1-rp-final

JustFab shoutout — love these killer heels!

Mary Kay shoutout — fresh, poppin’ beauty look

While on the subject of surprises, how Roberi landed in the bottom 3, please explain. My guess is that 2 judges, Nina & Savannah gave it a low score, but the fact that the remaining 2 judges didn’t, I just don’t see how he landed in the bottom 3?? Yes, the look was short, but no cheeks were shown! And this look was just so intriguing, so artistic. It just makes 0 sense how yawns and bores made it safe, but Roberi was bottom 3 — NO!

pr15-ep1-ba-final

Sally Beauty shoutout — Cornelius was similar with the braid updo, so both were standouts to me!

Thankfully Roberi was in no danger of going home, with the bottom 2 being comprised of Brik & Ian. All episode, the other designers were loving these glitter pants. Was that fake?? I was going to be baffled in this made the top 3. He glued glitter on muslin pants, not too impressive. But the top, especially the shoulders made of caps was more impressive. The judges here were absolutely correct that this look was a disconnect.

pr15-ep1-ih-final

But it was Ian who went home this week. His look wasn’t the worst of the bunch, but boy did his attitude suck. He clearly was not receptive of any criticism. Designers come onto PR, or at least should come on the show, to learn and grow. If you can make it on your own, you wouldn’t be on this show. Ian didnt’ seem to accept anything that Tim or the judges said and PR didn’t seem like a good fit for him.

Festival Fashion for 2016

Festival season has kicked off with Coachella starting this past weekend. With more festivals to come — Governors Ball, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and more — here are some ideas for looks if you plan on attending!

Both Cute Like Mad and Minan Wong are sustainable brands that are manufactured in NYC and the U.S. respectively. Cute Like Mad’s vision is all about creating unique styles that empower the wearer with confidence. The brand’s signature style is relaxed luxury with an injection of rock ‘n’ roll — tough as nails and yet refined.

Nolcha Shows During New York Fashion Week Women's Fall/Winter 2016 Presented By Neogrid - Cute Like Mad

With Minan Wong, here is what she has to say about her Vision — “When I decided to make my own collection, I brought my personal journey into the details. When I design, I get a surge of energy. I love clothing that exudes a vibrant, youthful aura and can support the strength of a woman. The crisp touch of a brand new dress. The exhilarating breath you take before meeting your dream client. The strut that begins when you catch a reflection of yourself in the window, rocking that jacket. This is MINAN WONG.”

Vitruvius and Fine Art of Fashion showcased various works by fashion design students from Vancouver and Stevenson University in Maryland—giving them a platform to jump-start their careers. Vitruvius’ collection collection is named ‘I am Astronaut’, inspired by the news of the discovery of an earth-like planet. The students have used their imaginations to create garments inspired by aliens, planets, moons, and gravity.

With Fine Art of Fashion, the students designed their looks based on a variety of inspirations. The juniors were assigned a theme, Fine Art of Fashion, and each student chose an artist or art movement as a rich source of inspiration for their collection. Student, Benish Masih was inspired by the Qajar Art Movement, Erin Boggs used Street Art as inspiration, Venus Khosravani drew her inspiration from Michaelangelo, Sarantos Papavasilakis was inspired by Roy Lichtenstein, Tatsiana Toustik by Andy Warhol, and Tearsa Thomas’ inspiration came from Magical Realism.

The seniors each designed a five-piece collection based on their inspiration of choice. Amber Lloyd was inspired by the contorted shapes of the deciduous forest in the winter,Sherese Mclean designed a Japanese inspired collection, Janic’e Sethman was inspired by the emotion of growth and development, and Jasmine Ward’s inspiration came from spring time in Paris.

The Neverland Collection stands for Gothic Lolita and traditional Chinese Lolita style. Made up of a dark nature and melancholy style with totems of crossbones, roses, thorns, angels, demons and more the Neverland collection contains a rock and roll influence. The Neverland collection is a fierce new style that is completely different from other Lolita collections. The Neverland collection successfully combines the foundational outfits of traditional Chinese Lolita style with Cheongsams.

The Girls’ dream of Hana collection is inspired by Sweet Lolita and Country Lolita. The Girls’ dream of Hana designs are pink, pastel blue, with light and soft color to augmented effect of aesthetics. The printings on bustles are fresh flowers and horticulture sceneries. Girls’ dream of Hana vision is to create Victorian styled fashion, Baroco style, and Rococo style. Girl’s Dream of Hana also presents more mature design concepts that use flowers as a main theme in heavy but soft colors combined with slender patterns.

Roses Valley vision is to create a high-end collection that represents vintage and royal styles of Lolita Fashion. This collection is affordable luxury derived from the dresses of French palaces, with inspiration derived from the Medieval Century of Europe, showing brilliant colors, mysterious, and religious belief in stories created on bustles. By stamping palace stories on the bustles and changing the leg-of mutton sleeves into puff sleeves, Roses Valley retrenches the intricacy of palace dresses into compendious Lolita dresses.

Naeem Kahn RTW Fall 2016

The F/W 16 collection for Naeem Khan was full of Khaneurisms, but certainly took a new elevated, extremely elegant direction. What was so important in this change — great use of color and prints. I also think use of mixed media played an important role.

Naeem Kahn RTW Fall 2016

Naeem Kahn RTW Fall 2016

I really enjoyed seeing a collection full of some great, classic eveningwear and cocktail attire, but no show would be complete without some stunning showstoppers as well. This collection was certainly not lacking in shimmer & shine! I wouldn’t be surprised if with future red carpets of 2016 or even early 2017 that we could see some of these looks!

The Georgine F/W 16 collection was an eclectic mix, blended uptown allure meets nerd chic. Fur coats, statement eyewear and more made significant appearances in this collection. Ultrafeminine dresses were worked in rich devore velvets. Designer Georgine Ratelband did a superb job here.

Georgine_FW16-11

Georgine_FW16-33

I thought this collection was very dynamic; it had a lot to offer. There was this striking balance between soft and hard. There was a fun, flirty, girly element, then a chic, fashionista vibe, but finally, a hard-core, darker, high fashion vision. There were definitely some standout looks here!

Xuly Bet

Xuly Bet Fashion Show, Ready To Wear Collection Fall Winter 2016 in New York

The Fall/Winter 2016 collection for Xuly Bet was not only momentous artistically, but historically, as it was the first all-black fashion show in all of NYFW history. Inspired by designer Lamine Badian Kouyaté’s West African roots, each piece was a new, mosaic-like mixing of culture and fashion.

Xuly Bet Fashion Show, Ready To Wear Collection Fall Winter 2016 in New York

It was clear within the first few ensembles that the fearless and effortless clash of pattern and fabric we saw with Lamine’s previous collections resurfaced as a key feature of this recent collection. Highly unique, each outfit had a strong voice emblazoned with neon, punctuated by striking high heels.

Every ensemble was tied together with statement tights. The tights were made of a disco-pant shiny material and ranged from a glittery emerald with black swirls and a bright pink zebra print to metallic silver.

The striking hue of each outfit was the central theme throughout the collection. The collection offered variety, ranging from extravagant carmine fur vests paired with rich gold jumpsuits, to casual oversized sports jersey jackets.

Laurel DeWitt

20160218_Laurel_Dewitt_Runway-4391

For Laurel Dewitt’s F/W 2016 collection, she continued to push the envelope into the stratosphere. Self taught in the field of metal manipulation, Laurel weaves a variety of textures, fabrics and color to create visually stunning wearable art. This season, she introduced new materials including denim, leather, and knits. When incorporated with her traditional chain dresses and chain webbing garments, the results are beyond breathtaking and beautiful.

20160218_Laurel_Dewitt_Runway-4435

Supple, butter-soft leather and denim, which she painstakingly distresses by hand, are intertwined with metal chains, dangles, and baubles that both enthrall and captivate. The Goddess Biker vibe that she has created this season is not softened by layers of taffata or velvet. But rather, it is achieved by constructing hundred of appliqued metal flowers. Hand-cut, hand-molded, and hand-inked roses are created from sheets of metal adding vibrant color and elegance to these stunning creations.

FW16 NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

FW16 NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

FW16 NEW YORK FASHION WEEK

The collection is inspired by a timeless cultural dreamland that is a mélange of influences from different cultures spanning the Chinese Western frontier to Central Asia and the Caucuses, along the new economic and cultural trade route comprising the modern day ‘Silk Road’. Drawing upon indigenous cultures from Xinjiang, Kazakhstan, all the way to Turkey and Russia, this culture-bridging approach makes for a harmonious mosaic that is the main theme of the collection. Vivienne Tam’s collection features patterns and patchwork derived from traditional talismans – from protective amulets expressing a mother’s love symbolized by triangles but contemporized on techno-mesh, to caroqs with evil eye patchwork made from recycled fabric, to embroidered dowry suzanis and even a nod to American quilts.

The collection embodies a contemporary contextualization of traditional shapes that are characteristic of various cultures, expressed in relaxed silhouettes, jacquard rendered capes, robe-like coats, leather-trimmed coats, long tunics over striped oversized trousers, gaucho pants and dropped shoulders. The palette is a rich, earth toned one featuring deep burgundies, siennas, reds and greens, as well as deep blacks and burnished pewter and bronze metallics.

Runa Ray — Subtle Teachings of Origami

22nyfw20

We are constantly evolving and transforming into what we would like to be. Evolution is thus a natural process. It is fascinating by the way a plain piece of paper can be folded and unfolded until it becomes its purpose. We are born blank canvases onto which we decide to write the chapters of our life. We continue to fold and unfold till we either complete ourselves or remain a mystery. The similar principle lies in the art of making clothes. Using Origami and its techniques to create clothing, the process is very similar to what we do with our lives, I have either completed the product following all the steps diligently, made a start using basic folds, or completely arrested the development halfway through all the stages of folding.

Come Evolve with Runa Ray for F/W 16.
