Project Runway Goes Super Cute this Week

Yep! So much about this week’s episode of Project Runway was just down right super cute — the American Doll theme, the designers working with kids, the kids being the models and thus, getting all made-up & rockin’ the runway! Well……almost everything was super cute, minus some designer tensions and the norm judges’ critiques — not quite as warm & fuzzy!

pr13-ep9-episode1

Tim Gunn & Heather Northrop, Senior Design Manager of the American Girl Doll brand (also one of this week’s guest judges), delivered the challenge instructions for the week. The designers had to create age-appropriate looks for younger models, again, young girls (ages 9-12 I believe was the range). American Girl has been freshening & expanding their brand via fashion with “BeForever” — taking from signature classic doll looks, and creating modern, wearable styles for girls today. Each designer would be paired with a BeForever character to create a young, modern look for children to wear.

pr13-ep9-episode4

The designers had 30 minutes to sketch and learn about their doll’s character and life story. They could read the doll’s attached storybook, glance around at displays in the American Girl store, and even ask questions to their young models. For this 1-day challenge, American Girl provided fabrics the designers could use. But a Mood trip was also still an option, with a $150 budget on hand.

pr13-ep9-episode6

Sandhya was certainly a focal point of this week’s episode, generally not a good sign with how PR likes to foreshadow results with their editing magic. So first, we saw a little tension at Mood between Sandhya & Korina due to Sandhya interrupting Korina’s time with a Mood employee. We also saw Tim & Sandhya disagreeing quite a bit during his consult, leaving Tim to say that he often doesn’t get what she does, but the judges seem to like it, so I will leave you be. And then as the designers were back to the Gotham apartments, Sandhya was frustrated over other designers not understanding her point of view or aesthetic. Many viewers are on the same page as the designers though! But I think what Emily had said during her confessional was spot on. It’s hard not to take things personally when it involves your work, your designs, something which is of course, so personal to the creator. On the other hand, when the judges critiques make zero sense as to how someone landed in the top 3 or won a challenge, questions are going to arise and confusion will clearly surface.

pr13-ep9-episode20

Kini was experiencing an early designer’s block, but Speedy Kini was soon back and stronger than ever as he completed several different looks before settling on the separates he chose for the runway.

pr13-ep9-episode12

Tim & Char were also on different pages this week during his consult. He wanted her to ditch the fringe, but she decided to keep it with the look. Heck, even her doll’s look had some fringe and with this season also being a season of many fringe looks, why not right! It definitely worked in her favor as she snagged a top 3 spot!

pr13-ep9-episode16

Emily was another bit of a focal point during this week’s episode. She has her own children’s clothing line. This should have been her challenge right! Wrong! She actually landed in the bottom 3, more details later!

pr13-ep9-episode11

The morning of the runway came and a few were still in busy bee mode. Joining American Doll design manager Heather, was Mad Men actress Elizabeth Moss.

pr13-ep9-episode37

The top this week was pretty clear cut, not much disagreement in my opinion. As mentioned earlier, Char did not take Tim’s advice in ditching her fringe. Char’s look definitely deserved a top 3 nod! Many looks this week seemed more on the mature side for kids, but Chars’ was very age appropriate. She chose bold colors, but they were super fun and also going with my title for this post, Super Cute! The fringe vest was clearly part of her doll, Kaya’s story.

This look was a modern take for Kaya, sticking true to her ancestry, story, and roots, but clearly youthful and updated. She stuck to the challenge and deserves the great compliments received from the judges and viewers!

Shout-out also for Philip B. hairchic side braid, complete with a bow matching her tan fringe vest.

Korina worked on a modern look for Josefina. I’m very happy she landed a top 3 spot with her super cool, super cute, graphic, and fun tiered look. It was so well deserved! I’m not sure if she finished her tiered patches exactly the way she wanted to. I know she was working up to the very last second. And so I think if she had a bit more time she could have won this week. But hey, top 3, not too shabby at all!

-project-r6unway--sea

Just as Char did, Korina too was spot on with the challenge. She really stuck to Josefina’s story and created a modern look. It was very touching that she included the color yellow, which was integral to her doll’s story — I believe it was related to the loss of her mother, and so Josefina always integrated yellow into her wardrobe somehow. Shout-out also for Philip B. Hair, the pigtail braids were perfect for the character. And, a shout-out to Aldo, I’m assuming this was their red hat, but nonetheless, it was perfect for the challenge.

samantha-thumb-320x371

Rounding out the top 3, and this week’s winner, was Speedy Kini! Kini’s look was a bit mature for a 9-12 year old, but young girls love to, on occasion, get a little dressed up. There is no harm in a child having a look or 2 in their wardrobe that is not for the everyday, but for a very special event or moment. Kini’s plaid dress and coat were so well made and the dress really had some nice touches/details — the cutouts, the volume, etc.!

-project-run5way--sea

I think it’s important to remember that this look was supposed to have a connection with the Samantha character. And with that in mind, I believe he did create a modern look based off of the doll’s character and story. Shout-outs to Philip B. hair for this wavy do and Aldo Shoes for the perfectly coordinated black flats.

F7134_main_1

Sean has been riding a top 3 & winning look stride for the past few weeks, but this time around, he narrowly escaped being in the bottom 2. I think a couple of judges had more to say about Emily’s look so this was his saving grace! Generally, a look that is too basic is almost always in jeopardy of going home, but again, Sean overcame that hurdle as well. But that was his biggest issue, this look was just a bit too bland. It does look super comfy, but I think Nina was spot on in her critique. Julie was in the era of the 70s, a time where use of color was so prominent, and this look was all blue, full pun intended!

-project-2runway--sea

There was an updated market with boho chic that Sean could have taken with his design direction, but this print, the lack of color used, was a missed opportunity.

image.asp

Emily’s resulting bottom 3 placement, well really bottom 2, was the surprise, for me, this week. I did think with her already having experience in making children’s clothes, having her line and all, that she would have not been in jeopardy of going home. In fact, when it came down to her & Sandhya, I was for sure she would end up going because the judges seemed to be so enamored with Sandhya. Had this happened, surprising feelings would have been in addition to unfair, shocking, and much more heat-filled emotions!

-project-ru3nway--sea

Speaking to Emily’s look specifically, there were aspects I liked, but also, some I didn’t. The knit top and the netted face mask were the latter! I don’t think she needed the face piece since her tulle voluminous skirt was enough of a show element. The younger model clearly was not a fan of it either! The knit top also seemed very dated — not much of a modern feel for Rebecca. I did enjoy the luminescent tulle skirt though. In fact, I thought this skirt was very fun and playful! I think paired with a different top, the direction might have been more accepted by the judges. But with this top, the judges thoughts on the look being a little frumpy, too dark of colors, kind of made some sense. I’m still not sure she deserved such harsh critiques and a bottom 2 placement, but hopefully she can bounce back strong!

F1390_main_1

This left Sandhya rounding out the bottom 3 and going home this week. Honestly, when I saw this look, I clearly thought it was worthy of elimination. But after last week, and her crazy clown-like ensemble being in the top 3, I really didn’t know what the judges would think. Because they finally seemed to be on the same page as me, I can’t say I wasn’t 100% pleased with this decision. I’ve not been a fan of many of Sandhya’s looks this season. But my frustration and overzealous confusion arose because the judges seemed to love her looks, yet never clearly explained why.

-project-runway--sea

And I get a designer going out on a look they love, but clearly Sandhya was not having any critique this week. First she bypassed Tim’s comments and then, she clearly disagreed with everything the judges had to say. I know a ton of girls in the age range of 9-12 and I can’t think of any who would want to wear this, making them appear much more baby-like. Taking a more costume-y look like Emilys’ or a more mature look like Kinis’, girls would want to wear those because they get to dress up a bit, pretend they are a bit older. But Sandhya’s look for Caroline really did look like a child’s onesie. I don’t think she got what age appropriate meant for a child. Yes, a look can still be fun and playful. But what a child might wear at the age of 3, is not something children would want to wear at 10. Many of Sandhya’s looks this season have lacked sophistication, this one included. I’m glad the judges were finally able to see this and that they made the right decision with her elimination. Creativity and risk-taking are always appreciated in my book. But the end result, or a designer’s overall portfolio of work, should have some sense of high fashion and/or sophistication, not just DIY looks with way too many elements going on.

Question, so now that the designers don’t have immunity anymore, will there at least be something in store for the winning looks each week?? For example, this week, will Kini’s look actually be sold thru American Girl — did I miss that announcement?!?

PR Recap Time — Rain Rain, Go Away….

Hah! No sense in finishing that song because for Project Runway, the truth is, the rain should never go away! On PR this week, the regular runway was out the door. And in its place we got to see the 1st ever PR RAINWAY! Rain was pouring as the models strutted down the runway and I loved it all — great designs and a great show!

pr13-ep8-episode2

Heidi & Tim were front and center this week to not only introduce this new rainway, but also this week’s challenge. The designers were to create avant garde looks, which of course had to withstand the rain. Fashion and technology were compared when discussing innovation being essential, being able to push the boundaries, such as with Samsung’s new Curved Ultra HD TV. As technology pushes the envelope so too should the designers. They were encouraged to be forward thinking, cutting edge — creating a look that would WOW from every angle.

shopping

The designers were more than happy for their 1st 2-day challenge this season and were joyously off to Mood with a $300 budget. Tim added that heavy duty construction items for structure and contours would be available for use in the workroom as supplementary materials. But before the designers were off, PR of course displayed some editing foreshadowing magic as we already knew fäde was struggling a bit in this challenge with designer’s block. It was nice to see that Amanda was there for him during a tough time just as he was there for her when she was having a rough week — love those PR friendships!pr13-ep8-episode10At Mood the designers were of course all bumpin’ into each other in the same section of the store — VINYL, thinking of that rain! They were soon back to the workroom to learn how this 2 day challenge would work, Tim coming later on the 1st day, and the models would be there on the 2nd day. Tim time of course saw some great words of wisdom — Kini to watch for gimicks, wonderment for if Sean’s effect would come thru. But my 2 faves were with Amanda and this is the season of the vagina! And for Alexander, April showers will bring May flowers!

pr13-ep8-episode17

The designers were able to un-wind just a bit for this week since it was a 2-day challenge. In between day 1 & 2, they were back to the Gotham Apartments to let loose a bit, enjoy some wine and food up on the rooftop! The morning of day 2 also allowed for some time to make calls to home, so those were a few nice moments to see from each of the designers.

pr13-ep8-episode5

Day 2 also brought about a new decision for Korina to change-up her look. It was then time for model fittings and Sean’s dye effect was still in question. But how great was it of Kini to offer some friendly advice!

pr13-ep8-episode22

The morning of the runway was typical, full of a bit of chaos — preparing for a new runway, last minute adjustments, some looks beginning to come apart, and yes, Sean was still worried if his magic moment would come thru without any issue.

pr13-ep8-episode34

Guest judge this week was Showtime’s Master of Sex actress Caitlin Fitzgerald. I totally forgot Caitlin was on Gossip Girl, which is a show that of course almost had fashion as its own character, thanks to the very talented costume designer Eric Daman. Ironically, Caitlin was “working” at a very upper level fashion position with W Magazine! But back to PR and this amazing runway presentation we got to witness, what a show! I’m still not clear on how the top 3 came about, but heck, that happens almost every week for me with PR.

The top 2 though, was abundantly clear. All 4 judges were singing the praises for both Kini and Sean. I’m happy Kini finally got his win, even if it was shared with Sean. I think Kini was just as much deserving, if not more.

-project-r5unway--sea

Sean’s look was magical in its full blown, dye coming out moment. But the “before” was just a plain white dress, and the “after”, an abstract dye-stained result. The avant garde aspect was for sure in the exact moment the water hit the garment and made the dye start dripping out. So again, happy Kini got his win, but Sean for sure deserved his top placement kudos as well.

pr13-ep8-episode30

Sean definitely exemplified art coming to life this week and there was no doubt you could feel the magic of this moment. And the great aspect, you won’t get dye on you since there was an underlayer cover to protect your skin from the dye. It would be super fun to be out in the rain during a summer rainstorm and have all eyes on you as your dress was constantly changing. Shout-out also to Sean for picking some perfectly coordinating white heels to go with his look from Aldo shoes

-project-ru6nway--sea

But for me it was Kini who hit the homerun, not only a homerun, but knocking it out of the park. This look was head to toe stunning, a full on show, avant garde piece. Every detail was so well thought out and this was just such an eye-catching piece. I was right there with Zac and knowing that all faces would be lit up in seeing this black umbrella-inspired number. Some of the judges were not a fan of the hat, but I thought it was perfection for his runway presentation. The winning aspect for Kini was his look didn’t need the rain to come alive, it was just as vibrant and dynamic even if the rainway was not in existence. I have to also give a beauty shout-out for Kini’s Mary Kay make-up look, great shine on the complexion and I loved the bold red lip!

-project3-runway--sea

The third spot of the top was confusing for me though, with Sandhya getting it. The reason for confusion was not simply because I was unimpressed, but because of the judges commentary. There were some positive statements, but it seemed as if only Heidi was fully on board with this look. So I’m just not sure how with only 1 judges support, out of 4 judges, that she scored high enough to garner a top 3 placement. I didn’t realize a look of bright colors automatically means happy, which then equates to fashion. Nina was right on point in saying this look lacked sophistication, very circus-y and child-like. Sandhya told Tim she was able to edit extremely well, but I’m not sure where her editing eye was with this look. There were not only too many bright colors, but there was way too much going on. Come on judges, if you are really going to try & sell this as a top look, at least sound convincing yourself when you critique it! Because there were 3 other safe looks that probably had mixed reviews as well and certainly ones that were at least fashionable avant garde rather than looks more fit for an unconventional challenge. I mean it had pinwheels just thrown about all over the back right!

-project-runw2ay--sea

Speaking of safe looks, I was a fan of Alexander’s floral number. It looked great coming down the runway and purple was such a great color to mix in with this look. Also, he gets a Philip B. hair shout-out, great chic bun! And finally, a Mary Kay beauty shout-out!!  But I have a Sr. beauty consultant with Mary Kay on board this week to further detail this make-up look. Meet Lauren Barker and see what she had to say! And really so many of the looks made use of a bold eye this week, so the “Graphic Eye Tutorial” below is a great resource for this runway!

“Those models were gorgeous in our bold Mary Kay colors!  The ladies looked great in our Peacock Blue Mineral Eye Color, True Dimensions Lipstick in First Blush and Gel Eyeliner in Black just to name a few.  Want your own runway look?  Luis Casco gave us a glimpse at how to make the perfect Graphic Eye Look with a two-tone cat eye.  Follow these steps to get runway-ready! -project-runway--sea

Shout-outs aside, let’s move onto the more unfortunate news — the bottom 3. Korina landed in the bottom this week, but of course was there ever any real concern?? She did have immunity, the last one! Clearly a last minute change-up didn’t work in her favor. I got what the judges were saying with how flimsy and unfinished this look was. I did however love her choice of Aldo strapped heels!!

-project-ru4nway--sea

Emily was filled with confidence all during this episode, but the judges ended up saying this look was not strong enough. The look was a bit more superhero than avant garde, but it did have potential. I think if she had focused more on structure and volume for the look, not so much added details with the shoulder pads and gloves, then the judges might have been more on board. Heidi was somewhat more favorable, but the rest of the judges were all about the look being so predictable and something they’ve seen before. Another great Aldo shoes look — love the black booties!

-project-runwa1y--sea

This left fäde as the one who went home. It didn’t come as much of a surprise. He just lost it this week and was uninspired. I have no doubts he is a great designer, but PR is a show that pushes you to be creative at the snap of a finger, needing something new for each challenge. He just hit a block as writers do all the time. Just as the judges said, it wasn’t strong, not enough for an avant garde challenge.

PR Designers Get to Meet Some Major Bling!!

So yes, courtesy of Chopard jewelry, the Project Runway designers were fortunate enough to select some immaculate pieces of jewelry to work with this week. Not exactly work with hands on because as we later saw, it was very much “lookie, but no touchie”! The Co-President and Artistic Director of Chopard, Caroline Scheufele, was with Tim to further explain this week’s challenge. Caroline would also serve as this week’s guest judge.

pr13-ep7-episode20

The challenge this week was to create an extravagant eveningwear look inspired by Chopard jewelry pieces. But not only would the jewelry serve as an inspiration, the looks would also incorporate the jewelry. Yes! This meant the models would get to don some very expensive and luxurious pieces of jewelry! Tim reminded the designers this was their moment to WOW the judges, pull out all the stops. Chopard is often seen on the red carpet so the designers had a great deal to live up to. Here are just a few examples of some looks incorporating Chopard that I’ve included on my Fashion Nexus Best Dressed lists!

The button bag was back this week. So No Sean, you didn’t get to pick what jewelry piece each designer would work with! Although really there were no bad options. Sean did get to pick first though and whether it was production’s hand in the mix or not, I’m glad Kini was able to choose second. He should have won last week so it only seemed fitting he chose toward the beginning of the bunch. Before heading off to Mood for this 1 day challenge, $250 budget, Tim came by the workroom for a couple of additional surprises.

1409065082_debra-messing-560

First, Tim decided to make use of his one-time only Tim Gunn Save. So yes! Char was back in the game! Was the save a bit too soon? Perhaps. Regardless, it at least means that the designers know from hear on out, there are no second chances left. Each week you have to go big or go home. Heidi also announced this was the last week for immunity. So really, every week from here on out, the designers have no choice but to step it up!

pr13-ep7-episode6

The 2nd bit of news from Tim was a field trip to provide some additional inspiration for this week’s challenge. Everyone was off to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to take in the Charles James exhibit, which was of course the unveiling exhibit for this year’s 2014 Met Gala, aka Met Ball. Charles James was a major fashion designer in the 1950s; he is widely known for being America’s first couturier.

elettra-getty-main_2817438a

As the designers got back to the workroom, I was pleased to see that the drama of last week seemingly was no more. KUDOS ladies! But a new battle was rising………the battle of the navy blues that is. Both Sean and Samantha chose a navy blue fabric to work with this week. So of course the question was on both of their minds as to whose navy blue gown would come out on top.

pr13-ep7-episode10

Other workroom happenings this week as we breezed thru Tim-time and the model fittings — it seemed as if “Speedy Kini” was not around; Samantha was making her very 1st gown; and Amanda was really battling with the direction of her design.

pr13-ep7-episode8

The morning of the runway was full of the norm chaotic last-minute craziness. It was then time for the runway presentations where we saw that poor Nina had a bit of an ankle injury this week :(, complete with crutches and ankle boot!

 pr13-ep7-episode31

The judges said this week, overall, they were impressed. And even when Heidi was announcing the winner and who would go home, she said again, how the designers had all really done a great job. This was not my sentiment at all. For me, I guess the bottom was a bit more shocking because I thought other designers could have ended up in the bottom just as easily. I’m not sure that all of the safe looks were executed perfectly, but it did seem that each of the bottom looks had some execution issues. So my assumption is that some of the safe looks I considered a bit of a yawn were likely safe because execution mistakes were either not present or not obvious.

-project-run4way--sea

Kini’s look was definitely one of mixed reviews. I knew he wouldn’t end up in the bottom 2! I’m not sure what it was with the white looks for the runway, but they didn’t seem to have a luxe feel to really match the jewels; this includes Char’s dress as well. I was surprised that the budget this week was only $250 being that the designers were working with such expensive pieces of jewelry. Perhaps if Kini had a larger budget he wouldn’t have chosen neoprene. Kini clearly had a design concept, and with a different fabric, or even in a different color, I think it would have paid off more. The bodice did have issues though! However I’m sure Kini can bounce back! Mary Kay shout-out: bold smoky bronzed eye!

-project-runway-2-sea

Alexander also had a great design concept, but it was too much to execute well in such a short amount of time. One of Alexander’s biggest issues was that the neckline did hide this stunning ruby necklace. But also, the gown really just felt overworked. And the back was definitely worse than the front.

pr13-ep7-episode28

However from this angle, you can get a better view of my hair shout-out from Philip B. hairlove this chic bun! I also loved Alexander’s beauty look, so Mary Kay shout-out as well.

-project-runway--3sea

This left Samantha being eliminated this week. I don’t think this was the worst dress of the bunch. There were several dresses that were a bit of a snooze-fest, very basic. There were looks that also weren’t very red-carpet worthy, whereas at least Samantha’s gown could have worked on a red carpet. I think it could have used a necklace though! But in going with the judges bottom 2, it usually represents a designer who did too much and one who did too little. Generally, the designer who did too little goes home. But I loved Samantha kept her model’s hair down this week, Philip B hair shout-out for wavy tresses!

-project-runway--sea

I got where the judges were coming from with this week’s top looks. They were clearly not looking for dresses that were a yawn. Rather, they rewarded risks! They wanted looks that could work on the red carpet, that lived up to the Chopard jewelry pieces being incorporated. Amanda’s look was definitely a risk. It paid off for all of the judges, minus Zac. This was clearly a look that would be loved or hated. It would end up on some best dressed lists, but perhaps for others, the worst dressed. I applauded Amanda for being different though and taking a risk. Safe designers take note! I loved the neckline for the jumpsuit and was pleased Amanda did pay attention to both pieces of her look. Finally, Aldo shout-out, a pair of heels I can see and that coordinate well with a look!

-project-runwa5y--sea

Sean’s strapless gown was not bad, but seeing it come down to him & Korina for the win, I am happy Korina received that honor. I’m not a huge fan of velvet. But the neckline with this necklace was also throwing me off. That sapphire necklace, while insanely gorgeous, I think is insanely difficult to make work with a look and not have it be too much. For this look, the Chopard jewelry all seemed a bit too much. But compared to the very safe looks from the other designers, Sean deserved to be in the top. His gown had such a great fit, and as he described, a very regal feel to it. The back was also quite stunning!

-project-r4unway--sea

Korina really pulled out all of the stops this week, just as Tim said at the start of the episode. How risky was it to use an upholstery fabric and as Sean mentioned, not have it look like a couch! The long printed coat was soooooo Korina. It was bold and statement-making. She also did a lovely job with the black dress, showing that the look could work even without the coat. But really, the look paid such homage to the dramatic, dangling Chopard necklace. It certainly was the best matched look to any of the Chopard necklaces for this challenge. Korina took a risk; it deservedly paid off. She created something different and stuck true to her aesthetic. Great bold beauty look & shout-out also with Mary Kayfull details below!

PR Designers — Goin’ to the Chapel and……

Well that’s about it — no traditional wedding details for this week or these Project Runway designers! This week the challenge instructions began with very much a wedding-like set-up, complete with Tim Gunn and this week’s guest judge Dita Von Teese walking down the aisle. It was then that the designers learned for this week, they had to create an unconventional wedding dress. They were to throw out traditional wedding dress rules (white gowns!) and create an alternative wedding look. It was a “no rules” challenge, but the designers were reminded the look shouldn’t be a costume; it had to be believable for a bride. This was a very intriguing challenge for me as I just put together an entire posting about if another traditional wedding rule should be tossed to the side — should you, as a wedding guest, wear white to a wedding?!?

pr13-ep6-episode3

But that wasn’t it for the challenge! This week, the designers also learned they were going to work in a team of 2, with a mission to create a corresponding reception look. With it only being a 1-day challenge a team of 2 could certainly be needed, but of course for every designer I’m sure it wasn’t wanted! I was happy the button bag was back to make the decisions this week and not having a designer just make the pairings. But of course, if it was acceptable for Sandhya to have a magic wand over a weekly challenge, why not let Sean have a go at it this week??

pr13-ep6-episode14

This week’s pairings were fäde/Emily, Alexander/Samantha, Kini/Sean, Sandhya/Char, and Korina/Amanda. It seemed as though most of the groups were setting sail in Paradise, except for one — Korina/Amanda. Now I’m not sure where all of the drama came from this week with these 2 talented ladies, but I say, as Joey from Full House would — “Cut it Out”!

joey-gifWe later saw that Char was in on the tension as well. All we know is Korina “told” Amanda she was phony, Char agreed, and really just a bunch of hearsay ensued. It’s not an unbelievable story as we all know women on competitive reality shows are often catty and tend to not get along. But PR never bothered to elaborate or show any background to this drama — THANKS PR! The ladies have seemed fine up until this point so I’m hoping the drama blows over! I want the ladies back this way!! —

pr13-ep6-episode5

Luckily for Amanda this week, it was Super-fäde to the rescue. I enjoyed seeing how compassionate and sweet he was to Amanda. So at least there was a positive amongst the unnecessary drama! Getting back to the actual PR design competition, the designers were next off to Mood to make use of their $400 budget.

pr13-ep6-episode13

The workroom time was full of expected happenings this week — Tim-time words of wisdom and caution; questions on compatibility of a given group’s looks; and of course, as we approached the morning of the runway, there was a whole lot of running around. So many looks were nowhere near being finished! In fact, as Tim gave his final warning calls, a few designers were still fast away at sewing — CRAZY! Of course, “Speedy Kini” was present & accounted for this week so his look was not one experiencing such craziness, but he definitely had to come to the rescue for Sean’s look!

pr13-ep6-episode17

I was really concerned as to how this runway was going to turn out — Korina being so unsure of her design, and both Sandhya and Char barely finishing their super totally major full-on solid bold yellow looks! Joining the judging team of Nina/Heidi/Zac was already-mentioned Dita Von Teese and super-famous fashion blogger/designer Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad. So what did the judges have to say this week??

 pr13-ep6-episode35

This week not only was traditional wedding attire thrown to the side, but so was the traditional top 3/bottom 3 categories for the designers’ looks. Basically what I saw was 1 safe look, 1 clear winning team, 1 clear bottom team, and 2 teams where the judges weren’t all on the same page. We saw that Korina kept changing her design this week, she was sewing until the last minute, she & Amanda weren’t always on the same page, and there was a point where we were left to wonder if there would be pants for the model to wear down the runway! With all of that said, it was Korina/Amanda who were left safe. I’m sure they both felt such a huge sigh of relief!

-project-runw4ay--sea

Coming in more towards the middle of the pack this week was Team Emily/fäde. Emily’s look, as seen above, was the one of this duo where the judges had more disagreement. Nina thought it was over-the-top goth, as did Chiara, but she at least thought it was editorial. Heidi didn’t mind it as an alt. bridal look. Surprisingly Dita was not a fan at all! I thought it might have been a bit over-the-top, maybe a little too much going on with the lace and cut-outs. But for a bride who wanted a darker ceremony, I think there was a market for this type of look. We all saw 27 Dresses right!

another-dress

The judges were a bit more fond of fäde‘s look. And I have to say I totally was team fäde this week!

-project-run5way--sea

Heidi wanted more cleavage and Nina wanted more length, which were very differing critiques. But I was focused on just how amazing his innovative self-created pattern was this week. The lace and paint details were just so stunning, very eye-catching. The major problem for this team though was that the looks were not harmonious. I would not see the same woman wearing Emily’s look for her wedding and fäde‘s dress for the reception.

-project-runw5ay--sea

Team Alexander/Samantha were the next pairing, more so in the bottom 2, but there were some positives with Samantha’s critique. My positives are towards her look details this week — love the black platform Aldo shoes, luscious waves from Philip B. hair, & bold beauty look (dramatic eye, nude lip) from Mary Kay. Nina was not a fan of all of the embellishments, but this look should never have been considered for elimination and I’m happy it wasn’t. I’m not sure why the judges were throwing shade at the bottom portion of her dress, something about how it looked as if wine had been spilled on it. If I recall, a winning look this season looked as if it was an old-stained piece of drapery, yet a barely recognizable 2 shades of burgundy gets called out — Okay judges! Samantha’s dress was definitely wearable as a reception ensemble and I very much saw the connection to her partner’s look.

-project-runwa2y--sea

The judges had far more to say about Alexander’s bridal piece. They were not fans of it at all! It was dubbed as being over-designed, with way too much going on — all the lace, all the embellishments. For me, I wasn’t a total fan, but nowhere near the judges’ issues. I think less embellishments, maybe more spread out (to lessen the heavy feel of the bodice), and of course, let’s take out the obvious seam on the lower portion then this look might have been more acceptable. Alexander too gets a Mary Kay makeup shout-out since both he & Samantha made use of a bold eye and nude lip. I also loved his chic up-do courtesy of Philip B. hair. But none of the judges negativity even compared to that of the clear bottom team this week — Sandhya/Char.

-project-runwa1y--sea

The judges dubbed this team’s look as Big Bird and Tweety bird, quite fitting with the massive amounts of yellow used. Yellow is not as difficult of a color to use as everyone made it seem. In fact, Amber Tamblyn had a lovely yellow wedding look and we see yellow as a needed pop of color on red carpets all the time.

amber-tamblyn-yellow-wedding-dress

I could easily see women wanting yellow as an alt. wedding dress, but the problem with this team’s looks this week was not the color, it was the designs and resulting executions. Sandhya spent a great deal of time on a braided bodice and it really did look as if she tried to drape a bed-sheet for the bottom portion. If she wanted to work with a more detailed bodice, she perhaps shouldn’t have tried to execute a draped bottom, which is something she said she was unfamiliar with doing. PR is all about 1-day challenges, so get fancy with the top, keep the bottom simple or vice versa. But trying to put so much detailing into the top and taking on a new design technique for the bottom clearly spells out DISASTER! Sandhya can take this lesson and move on as Char was the one who was left eliminated this week.

-project-runway--sea

I’m not sure what was going on with Char this week. I think Sandhya took a stronger hand with the design & shopping process this time since with her last group challenge she didn’t maintain herself as a designer in her group. So for this group challenge, I think it was Char who lost herself. The up-close judges viewing/critique certainly displayed a lot more that was wrong with this look. Char claimed to have run out of time, but Nina questioned where all her time went. Char just didn’t have a clear vision or concept, and it resulted in a poorly executed look, which we saw was a glaring issue for so many in last week’s challenge.

This left 1 group clearly being in the top this week — Kini/Sean. But it wasn’t without some strong judges’ opinions!

-project-runway--se6a

Sean’s look was great this week and he ended up with the win. But what really brought the judges to fully loving this look was the chic, sophisticated white top, which Kini made!! As great as Sean’s pants were, I thought it in no way compared to Kini’s immaculately designed bridal look. As Dita said, I would wear Kini’s look as a bride, but for Sean’s look, I could wear it on a Tuesday. But for Sean, lovely curled up-do by Philip B. hair and perfectly coordinated black sandal heels from Aldo. The guys worked well together, with Kini swooping in to save the day! And if this resulting look was Sean’s design concept then I think it very much worked as part of the team’s overall story and was deserving of some recognition. But it was just such a shame that Kini missed out on a win, Again!

-project-runway--s7ea

This week’s decision was just another example of the judges not making sense with their logic. Both looks had great movement and were very chic. But Kini really kept the challenge in mind and was the only one to fully execute the harder of the 2 looks — the bridal garment!! It was important that Nina mentioned should Kini get the win because he deserved it or because he’s due for a win, was it just his turn? And I’m happy Heidi stood firm in that this look was fully deserving in it’s own right of the win. We saw at least 3 decent reception looks this week from Samantha, Amanda, and fäde. On the other hand, we only saw 1 fully believable bridal look. I thought that would have meant something. Kini’s look had flair, drama, and would certainly make any bride be the center of attention, even though not wearing white. I do not think it was over-designed or over-the-top. I really wish Kini was given his earned win this week!

Similarly to Sean’s hair look, Kini also gets a Philip B. hair shout-out. I also enjoyed his Mary Kay beauty look — it was very fresh, natural feeling.

Next week — “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”!! Can’t wait!!

Poor Heidi! — Places to Go, But Ahhhhh, Nothing to Wear!

So what’s the solution?? Duh! Just make it a PR challenge! This week, with the 2014 Emmy season quickly approaching, Heidi was in need of something to wear for the Creative Arts Emmy’s red carpet. She instructed the designers to keep with their POV, but to also keep her sense of style in mind. She wanted the unexpected, a fearless fashion forward look that would not put her on anyone’s worst dressed list! Lucky for Heidi she had 12 eager beaver designers ready and rearing! Well maybe not all 12 as we later saw!

1401810229_heidi-klum-560_640

Prior Heidi Klum Red Carpet Look — 2014 CFDA Awards — On My Best Dressed List!

A few of the designers were quick to worry as red carpet attire was not something they had made before. Before going to Mood with their $250 budget, Tim stopped in with some important reminders — Heidi has worn it all, solids, prints, varied necklines. And as was clearly demonstrated from Heidi’s red carpet dociet, she is not married to any particular look; her sense of style runs the gambit! Sketch-time still revealed many designers’ mix of emotions, but it was time for Mood so the designers could get started on this 1-day challenge!

2013-emmys-heidi-klum

Tim was still there at Mood to hand out more reminders, such as be careful with fabric choices and to get what you need now! How ironic right?!? It seemed as if the designers heeded to this warning, spending nearly all of their $250 budget! The designers were soon back to the workroom with Korina off to investigate what the other designers were doing. Many designers were soon flocking over to Kini’s work area as #SpeedyKini was still present and accounted for in the workroom!!

pr13-ep5-episode15

Tim-time was of course joined with the client this week, Heidi! The thunder noise effect we heard in the background, the looks of terror, all appropriate! And here are just a few of the words of wisdom from Heidi — “Don’t bore”; “I need the cleavage”‘ “I want the sex appeal”; “Don’t be Dynasty”‘ “No nap for Kini today”; “Let’s show some skin”; “Wake the babies up”; & “No tears”! Needless to say — a lot of “Make it Work” moments!

pr13-ep5-episode14

The designer struggles were very apparent, so Tim & Heidi came back to the workroom with some new challenge instructions. She offered the designers a chance to go back to Mood with an additional $100. Only seven designers went back, but it was Sandhya who knew that left 5 designers with a spare $100. So on top of close to $250 already spent, she now added another $432. Smart move, but as we later saw, it wasn’t a great pay off as she didn’t even make top 3 this week! Kind of interesting that designers who worked with nearly half of her budget somehow still landed in the top 3! As for the other designers who returned to Mood many were in the same boat, scared, having to start over, with time running out!

pr13-ep5-episode6

Emily brought up an interesting point in that this return trip to Mood, an additional budget, did seemingly give some designers a 2nd chance, an advantage perhaps? But the offer was made to all of the designers. As seen with the model fittings and later on with the runway, was the 2nd trip to Mood really an advantage?? The designers who ended up in the bottom this week — all Mood returnees. And many of the returnees had to start over, which didn’t leave them a whole lot of time.

pr13-ep5-episode10

The guest judge this week was Olympic gold medalist and 4 time World Cup skiing champ Lindsey Vonn. I’m not sure of the red carpet connection on this one, but she knew what she was talking about and gave some thoughtful critiques. Now with the morning of the runway, Tim noted progress. But after the runway presentation ended Heidi was still disappointed. I agree with Heidi. There were certainly some stunning looks. But I thought the bottom clearly represented the looks where mistakes were very much obvious. However, a lot of the safe looks still didn’t translate so well with this red carpet challenge — many were kind of a yawn, a little too basic. It was kind of on point that certain designers were “safe” this week as a lot of their looks were just that — SAFE!

pr13-ep5-episode43

The bottom looks were a lot easier to sum up this week. In fact, there isn’t much need to discuss each one separately. My critiques were very much in line with what the judges had to say. These bottom looks were very basic and still not even well executed. The looks all seemed very sloppy/messy and it was clear time was a factor. The mistakes were just all so glaringly obvious from uneven hem-lines to puckering at the seams — so much looked unfinished. And all of the designers seemed to know this. For all 3 of the designers, designing red carpet attire was unfamiliar territory, and so clearly fear took over. It was of course difficult to see 2 designers go!

-project-runway--s1ea

With all of the designers on an equal playing field in terms of being in the bottom, I’m sure the judges took into consideration their prior work. Mitchell had been in the bottom only once, but I think what had hurt him here was he had yet to have a true shining moment in the judges’ eyes. They might have been unsure with his vision, his aesthetic.

-project-runway--se2a

Kristine was the 2nd designer given the axe this week, which was quite contradictory with my line of thinking for Mitchell. She too had been in the bottom, just last week in fact, but unlike Mitchell, she had been in the top — twice in fact counting the group challenge. It was likely planned to have a dual elimination this season, but I’m not sure this was the right week. And the judges did note a couple of positives with the look.

-project-runway--sea

Korina was the 3rd designer in the bottom and escaped elimination this week. This was her 1st bottom appearance so that was probably her saving grace this week. I did have a few positives with Korina’s overall look though — lovely side-swept do courtesy of Philip B. hair; clean, natural, fresh Mary Kay beauty make-up look; & although not shoes, still courtesy of Aldo accessories, I thought the elegant, statement-making earrings were a nice touch!

-project9-runway--sea

The top looks this week were certainly a breath of fresh air and I 100% agreed with the judges — FINALLY!! I think Heidi could have rocked each of these looks, but based on the great press Sean’s dress has been receiving, I’m thinking Heidi’s gut instincts were right in naming him the winner this week. Other designers this week tried to make an expensive fabric do their work, and the same could have been said for a basic fringe dress. But Sean put his own modern twist on his ombre royal blue fringe dress. The color was 100% spot-on, PHENOMENAL! Many designers made use of an open back this week and Sean’s was very much top-notch and at the top of the bunch! The judges were right in that this dress would photograph beautifully and in so many ways. This was a great comeback for Sean and I’m happy for him, very well deserved!

-project-runway-8-sea

Kini also deserves some major props this week, keeping on the “top looks” train! I’m sure he is very much ready for a win, but without that, I’m positive a job well done for 2 weeks now will be remembered. I always gravitate to bold colors or prints when I first create a best dressed list, to see if I have any faves. So Sean’s great use of color this week likely helped in his win. But my best dressed lists never fail to include an elegant black floor-length gown(s). And I’m sure Kini’s look would have made mine! This look was so chic, so sophisticated, and very fitting for the red carpet. Another gorgeous open back as well! What I also loved was that Kini listened to Heidi, while still staying true to his design aesthetic. And I very much agree with Nina in how this dress perfectly hugged the model, such a great fit! The little critique I have is that I didn’t think the look needed the lengthy necklace, but great call with the bold smoky eye provided by Mary Kay!!

-project-runway--se4a

Amanda topped the highest scoring looks this week. This is definitely a look that some are going to love and others just aren’t. As we even saw with the judges, Zac was not a fan of all the beading. But what I loved about seeing this look in the top — it was a risk. It was unexpected, but as we’ve seen from other risk-taking top looks this season, IT WAS NOT DIY or arts & craft!! This was a new side of Amanda, but it was still Amanda — just her aesthetic at an amplified level. I could very much see it on Heidi and on the red carpet. Another aspect I love about Amanda is she is a designer who each week truly thinks of the overall look. I’m always a fan of the added details. And so again this week, more Shout-outs for her fishtail braid, a breath of fresh air for red carpet hair stylings, courtesy of Philip B. hair; perfect make-up look, not just a standard smoky eye, but very nice touch with a tangerine/red lip from Mary Kay; and again, no shoe Shout-out & I don’t love the earrings with this look, but very on point with Aldo accessories, the gold statement-making bracelet.

-project-runway--3sea

More Accessories Shout-outs:

  • Alexander — chic side-swept waves by Philip B. hair, perfectly coordinated silver cuff from Aldo accessories; & stunning make-up beauty look from Mary Kay, subtle smoky eye & pop of pink lips!
  • Samantha — more lovely curled tresses, waviness to the max, courtesy of Philip B. hair!!

PR/Ep 4 — Let’s Remix this Business!

So this week’s episode started out as per norm — the challenge guessing game and what might be in store for the future! The one difference was by the end of the challenge reveal, I kind of wanted a burger!! I think Kini did as well!

pr13-ep4-episode1

The designers arrived at Red Robin to meet with Tim to receive their instructions for the week. Joining Tim was VP of Red Robin Brand Transformation Jason Rusk. Also joining this well-dressed duo were some not so well-dressed male models, sporting various classic and vintage tuxe styles. And yes, this includes the cheesy light blue number better known for being bad prom fashion!

pr13-ep4-episode3

This week the designers were to re-purpose and remix an array of men’s vintage suits to create a look for the modern woman. At first I think the designers were hoping this wasn’t a menswear challenge. But I think a few would have rather had that than this one! The male models’ suits were to serve as an inspiration for their look this week, but also the FABRIC!! The designers were to use the jacket and pants to transform a classic tuxe to a high fashion womenswear look. The suit fabric had to be prominent in the final look.

pr13-ep4-episode4

Now if some off-putting fabric was not enough of a twist this week, PR introduced a new spin on designers choosing what suit they would work with this week. Tim’s dreaded drawstring bag would probably be welcomed back now with open arms! Last week’s winner, Sandhya, not only got to choose first, but she then was allowed to choose each designers’ fabric. I don’t care who the winner was last week, but to me, this was a horrible idea and it certainly is not going to gain Sandhya any popularity. I do not believe any designer would have not used this opportunity for a bit of strategy. I also don’t believe based on this group of choices that anyone could predict what fabric a designer would want to use. Some of the tuxes were clearly better than others. I think PR should have just stuck with the traditional selection processes — either drawing names to see who would choose or even letting Sandhya choose the next designer to go, and so on and so forth. The drama would still remain the same as those unfortunate last few names selected would not get the luck of the draw! I question “Why this change” & “Why now”!

pr13-ep4-episode6

The designers did get to eat some tasty Red Robin cuisine while sketching, and then it was off to Mood to purchase $100 of supplemental fabric. Everyone was then back to the workroom to start this 1-day challenge. A few designers had some early on frustrations, and not just figuring out how to work with some of the horrific fabric choices! Amanda’s battle with her fabric was a bit different, a battle for health — lots of early on sneezing! We saw on UTG last season that allergic reactions to fabrics are possible!

pr13-ep4-episode10

Kristine and Korina’s issue came about because each decided to make a leather motorcycle jacket. I would be concerned about 2 similar looks walking the runway if I were on this show. Each week, not only are designers compared to every other look ever seen on PR, but also looks seen from designers outside of the PR realm. To go side by side with another designer just amplifies that situation. But the ladies decided to move on, keep working, and thought in the end, their jackets would be different enough.

pr13-ep4-episode12

During Tim time, he cautioned a few designers that their look needed to read high fashion. Alexander was concerned over his bottom placement last week, but knew he could spin it positively. And finally we learned a new nickname for Kini — “Speedy Kini.” I can’t believe he created what he did so quickly!

pr13-ep4-episode21

This week’s guest judge was recent Teen Choice Award recipient for “Female Web Sensation” and YouTube mogul Bethany Mota. As the runway began this week we also saw a workroom feud continue to spill over as the runway show progressed. Hernan seemed to take the most issue with Sandhya’s selection and so he made the point to call her out, again, “Bitch” specifically, and her response — the middle finger! I guess getting over it or being the bigger person was an unknown concept to both parties here!

pr13-ep4-episode26_b

pr13-ep4-episode28

So good news or bad news first?? Let’s start with the top first since good news is always better than bad news right! I am so proud of Alexander this week, just as Heidi said “from the bottom to the top”! Alexander’s suit was certainly not the worst of the bunch, classic white with black trim, but his look was still so phenomenal!! I loved it and just as Bethany offered, I would too so rock this look at an event! The look was chic. I loved the neckline, its structure. I thought even though the look showed some midriff that it would still work with more than just “size 2” women since the skirt wasn’t fitted.

-project-run5way--sea

Also, generally I am not a personal fan of asymmetry, but Alexander convinced me with this look so I thought that spoke volumes in my book! Also major props to every aspect of this look — perfect selection of the platform ankle-strapped black heels from Aldo; great decision for a bold cat-eye by Mary Kay; & an elegant braided up-do courtesy of Philip B. hair!!

I was 2 for 3 this week with my guesses for the top looks, Kini was of course in my top! I was disappointed for him that he didn’t get the win this week. As we’ve seen, immunity can be important in saving a designer for the next week to come. But now, a winning designer might get to play God by choosing other designers’ fate — ok, not that serious, but still selecting a designer’s fabric is pretty important! This look was so dynamic! I loved the structured shoulders & skirt. Also, the side cut-outs were 100% on point!

-project-runw6ay--sea

Kini had to make use of a not so off-putting pinstriped suit and his work was very impressive. As Nina pointed out, all the lines matched up and were so clean. I also appreciated the judges pointing out the many details of this look, such as the back pockets from the original suit, still in place on the back of this look — NICE TOUCH! I guess those up close judging critiques do pay off! Kini also made some great choices with his Aldo accessories — grey peep-toe booties & silver bracelets!

And topping off the highest scoring looks was Amanda. One reason this was an okay surprise for me was because at least 1 designer who was given a horrible suit, pink & burgundy floral, was able to turn it around. I didn’t love this look as much as the judges, but I think her creative transformation from the original suit was the added benefit that not only put her in the top 3, but also gave her the win. Going along the lines of how the judges are scoring and make decisions this season, it wasn’t so shocking! If others can win by being arsty/crafty/DIY, then Amanda winning this week shouldn’t be that surprising.

-project-runwa4y--sea

Amanda’s look was very much Amanda — 70s, boho-chic, and vintage. I’m not sure I could see Heidi in this, but I could see a Vanessa Hudgens or Nikki Reed rockin’ this look at Coachella or on the streets of LA. I give Amanda props for some great choices this week — luscious flowing waves from Philip B. hair and clean fresh make-up look by Mary Kay.

I was definitely interested to see how the bottom 3 would turn out this week. I thought several designers could have ended up there! But I can’t say that the 3 chosen were undeserving. I am glad that Kristine was the first saved though. It just made sense being that she did so well last week and it was her first time in the bottom as compared to Sean & Hernan, who were both making a 2nd appearance. One major positive, I loved Kristine’s choice to go with this sleek straight hair look with blunt bang courtesy of Philip B. hair!

-project-runway--s1ea

But as far as the look, it was just hard to work with this off-putting burgundy tuxe. I think that jacket in almost any other color and especially another fabric would look super cool and edgy. The main issues with this look though were the pants. They just didn’t fit well at all and the use of organza was not the best of ideas!

I am still rooting for Sean, but was again surprised to find him in the bottom this week. I for sure thought he would bounce back! Hmmmm…..maybe next week! Just as with Kristine, Sean was working with not only a tough color, mustard yellow, but also a tough fabric, corduroy. Just as with his look last week, I saw some great elements and concepts, such as where he wanted to go with deconstruction. But again, the execution was not on point.

-project-runway--se2a

The overall end result for this look was just too basic, not very high fashion. I imagine it was Sean’s vision that ended up saving him this week over Hernan. But in terms of positives, Sean made great decisions when it came to lovely wavy tresses from Philip B. hair and a clean neutral beauty look by Mary Kay. I loved the black Aldo booties, just not for this look, but the golden jewelry accessories were very much on point!

So this means it was Hernan who was eliminated this week. I would have never guessed that someone who’s already shown at MBFW and has had celebs don his pieces would have gone home this early. I’ve seen his previous work and I’m a fan, but his design and talent was not translating on PR. I guess this show is not for every designer! So all 3 bottom looks had to make use of some pretty bad suit material. Hernan had a white polyester suit with beige/brown trim. All in all, his look was kind of basic this week. And I knew one of the judges was going to mention his use of the “V” over his model’s lady business!

-project-runway--sea

And just as Tim and the judges mentioned, the vinyl fabric was not the best choice for a supplemental fabric. I still think Hernan can bounce back in the real world and I wish him the best of luck!

And there was one designer I wanted to give a shout-out to, and that is Korina! I loved her chic red (from her stark red suit!) look consisting of a peplum sleeveless leather top and slitted skirt. I thought the look had a great vibe, very edgy and cool.

-project-runway--s3ea

But I also loved her choices for Aldo accessories, black sandal heels (great lightness to go with a more bold look) and silver bracelet. Her Mary Kay beauty look consisting of a slight smoky eye was also a great finishing touch!

AS ALWAYS, READY FOR NEXT WEEK!

Project Runway, Ep. 2 — Let’s Go to the Movies!

I can already tell this is going to be one heated, tension-filled PR season! Only 2 episodes in, and for a 2nd week in a row, I find myself vehemently disagreeing with the judges. But all in all, I still very much enjoyed the runway presentations this week. There were some stunning creations and THAT makes me eager to see more!

pr13-ep2-episode1

The episode started out with the designers waking up to find some buttery goodness (Popcorn!) and other treats, along with a private invite for a morning matinee at the Village East Cinema. The designers played the guessing game, but I think they all knew this wouldn’t be an ordinary trip to the movies! They started out watching a trailer dealing with fashion & runway presentations, but sooner rather later, Tim popped up on the screen, ready to give out the directions for this week’s challenge.

pr13-ep2-episode2

This challenge was a big one — unconventional and teams, which of course means we would be in for a CRAZY, drama-filled episode! The designers were to work in teams of 3 and create looks made out of unconventional materials. The 3 looks were to have a cohesive thread. And for the materials, the designers had at their disposal all items movie-related — concessions (popcorn, candy), ticket stubs, tape, cd’s, etc. And of course, to increase the level of chaos & crazy, the designers only had one day to, as Tim would say — MAKE IT WORK!

The groups were given “Colors” as team names, and here is my breakdown on the teams:

pr13-ep2-episode4

  • Team Silver — Korina, Kristine, & Amanda — who worked well right from the get go. The ladies agreed on a futuristic, science fiction vibe. I’m sure it was an added bonus to have Amanda, who not only has the PR experience, but was part of the season that was all about team challenges!
  • Team Purple — Char, Kini, & Mitchell — another group who got along well, but perhaps a little “Blue”, hahaha, no pun intended!

pr13-ep2-episode26

  • Team Blue — Angela, fäde, & Sean — This group didn’t gel as well as the others. Although I don’t get why there was so much focus on Angela this week. I get that she wanted to do her own thing, but their collection, specifically her look, was in no way a “bottom” contender. Also, I don’t see why their collection’s theme had to be so focused literally on movies & film. The concept of villains was fine, but it didn’t have to be so literal. It seemed as if they thought that their collection’s underlying theme had to relate back to movies in some way. I think this is what inhibited them in this process, not just Angela!
  • Team Green — Emily, Alexander, & Samantha — Another group who worked well, all on the same page for an avant garde direction.

pr13-ep2-episode29

  • Team Red — Hernan, Carrie, & Sandhya — Safe to say this group had the most dysfunction, and with so much focus throughout the episode, it was clear they would likely end up in the bottom. For me, they started out with the challenge all wrong. There was never a clear plan in play about their collection’s vibe or how it would be cohesive. Maybe it was Hernan’s ideas that were worked with later on, but no sole blame can be put on him for an initial plan not being discussed. And I think it was Sandhya who said “let’s do our own thing” and “we can’t force cohesion.” I agree, you can’t force it, but there is no excuse that it wasn’t even discussed!

This is definitely the type of episode that would of course frustrate any eliminated designer, and of course viewers. Some designers might not work well with unconventional materials. But these challenges are definitely a way to show which designers are most creative and innovative. There also fun to watch! It’s also a way a designer can still work in fashion. Former PR & PRAS designer, Kenley Collins, puts out amazing collections, but she also designs looks made out of candy for It’Sugar candy store display windows.

31

Team challenges can sometimes lead to unfair results, but are the most drama-filled episodes generally for PR — so of course fun to watch. But drama aside, in the real world, you are not always working as a solo designer. So what is learned from working in a group does have important practical life lessons. And finally with immunity, this is not the 1st time we’ve heard that with a designer who had immunity, they should be thankful for that. Immunity has also been a part of PR history. We know this coming in as viewers and so do the designers. So unfortunately, it doesn’t always play out in the most fair manner, but it can be the harsh reality of Project Runway.

pr13-ep2-episode34

This week, joining Heidi, Nina, and Zac, was famous fashion blogger Garance Dore. I have to say, this was a hard runway to judge. I didn’t think any 1 group had 3 “top” pieces. What I didn’t appreciate though was Heidi calling out Angela for the reason her group wasn’t in the top. The 2 other safe groups were also not in the top for a reason, why not call out what made those groups end up in the bottom?? Because I could think of a couple of names if we really need to go there!!

pr13-rr-ep2-sk-f

A few quick shout-outs — for Sean’s look specifically, but their whole team stood out for great work on their Mary Kay make-up looks (even though again, we saw some disagreement from them!). Mitchell also came back strong this week so props where props are deserved! His dress was sassy, fun, and flirty! And Alexander this week did a great job with his high-fashion, runway-worthy “film strips” look — breathtakingly stunning!

So now onto the judges top picks, Team Silver, Korina, Kristine, & Amanda. I already said this was a hard runway to judge. These certainly weren’t my top 3 looks of the night, but I get why the judges loved the pieces. The materials were used in a creative and innovative way. To them, it best represented what an unconventional challenge should be. Regardless, these ladies receive my Aldo accessories shout-out for the week. I loved the heels they selected to work with each of their garments.

pr13-rr-ep2-av-f

I was a little worried as Amanda was working. I kind of thought we might see a little too much of her model as we did way back in Season 7, with Emilio Sosa’s unconventional look. But I was pleasantly surprised seeing the look come down the runway. And from this group, Amanda was the rightful winner this week. So thankfully, the judges at least gave immunity to the right designer this time!

pr13-rr-ep2-ke-f

Korina’s look was on point again, just as it was last week. So I’m happy she was given some much-deserved focus this week. It’s also important that she sticks to who she is as a designer, so I’m looking forward to seeing her aesthetic and vision develop. And I’m so happy I didn’t focus on her “Mean Girls” persona we saw last week, as other viewers did, since I didn’t see that side of her at all this week. She worked so well, not only in a group challenge, but with 2 other females at that!

pr13-rr-ep2-kg-f

Kristine also did a fine job with her bold, graphic dress. I think what worked well for this group was the use of color, the green. It catches the eye. The ladies also showcased some great design techniques, as Kristine did with her braiding of the upper portion of her look. And just as the judges were in complete agreement for the top, they felt the same regarding the bottom looks.

pr13-rr-ep2-sg-f

Let’s start with Sandhya because we knew all episode that this group was likely in trouble, but with her immunity, she was the only safe designer this week! It’s hard not to focus on her immunity. The vast majority of what I’ve read about the 1st episode was that Sandhya wasn’t the rightful winner last week. I also think Sandhya didn’t herself believe she deserved that win. She was in such doubt as she talked with Tim. We then find out in this episode, had she not been questionably given immunity, she would have been eliminated.

It’s a hard pill to swallow, especially for Carrie who did go home. And yes, we’ve heard Heidi say before that a designer was lucky to have had immunity. But I can’t recall a time where on the week a designer was given said immunity, that it was so debatable as it was with Sandhya. And then to have that statement made to them. That was my biggest issue this week. Maybe this will make the judges think twice before giving a designer so much praise just because they might have prematurely dubbed someone as a judges’ pet! And I feel badly seeing anyone cry, but I’m not sure Sandhya grasped how huge it was for the other designers in her group. It’s their future on the line and as Carrie had to actually go thru, SHE WENT HOME!

pr13-rr-ep2-cs-f

I think Carrie definitely went home too soon. But I also wasn’t ready to see Hernan go. On a positive note, this team’s looks, IMO, had the best hair looks provided by Philip B. hair. The hard part for these looks were that side by side, there were a lot of similarities. You definitely see this subtle variation type aesthetic in a larger collection, but for only 3 looks, there needs to be a lot more to differentiate the pieces. I get the panic from the harsh Tim critique, but maybe this group should have tried to somehow make their original looks cohesive, stuck to their original guts more.

PR1302-Hernan-Lander-11-900x1350

And I do get the underlying idea here was Hernans’, but the team didn’t coordinate from the get go. The team chose to overly panic and go with Hernan. We definitely saw Hernan and Sandhya butt heads, but this was not the worst we’ve ever seen for team challenges. And both designers were kind of stuck in their own ways so I still wouldn’t place solo blame on Hernan for this team landing in the bottom.

So I wonder what we are in store for next week — CAN’T WAIT!!

Project-Runway-Season-13-Cast-Tom-Lorenzo-Site-TLO

aka Dazed & Confused! Of course, as a blogger, we know I’m not speechless, but I’m certainly all of the other alliterative “S” adjectives I mentioned above, along with a few others in fact! Despite the shock value, it was still a great Project Runway premiere night. I enjoyed watching the full 2 and a 1/2 hours. I hadn’t watched the “meet the designer” videos on Lifetime’s website so I really enjoyed the intro episode prior to the Season 13 premiere. It was great seeing that so many designers had really persevered to get where they are today and to make it on PR, whether it was from repeat auditions or a “rags to stitches” tale. And just as I mentioned in my own introductory PR post, it was hard to tell who would leave during this 1st episode. I had some hunches, but this was just one of the many shockers I was in store for during this premiere!

pr13-ep1-episode12                                      pr13-ep1-episode13So of the 18 new designers, sadly, 3 were quickly eliminated. Each designer presented a few pieces to the firing squad, aka “the judges”, Heidi Klum, Nina Garcia, & Zac Posen. I’m assuming the designers presented their audition pieces, basically showcasing who they are as a designer. So my first shock of the night came from who went home right off the bat!

pr13-ep1-episode2

You could definitely tell there were some early judges’ faves. But personally, I was very surprised that both Emmanuel & Tim were cut. Maybe one, but both?? Heck, when I wrote my intro post, two of the six images I used were from them. I wouldn’t say I pegged them as potential winners, but something about their previous work did catch my eye! I wasn’t quite as shocked by Nzinga’s elimination, but I still applaud a designer who has a clear POV; it just wasn’t the judges’ POV.

pr13-ep1-episode8                   pr13-ep1-episode5                   pr13-ep1-episode9But we are still very early on in the PR process and that is how the PR cookie crumbles — each week, one designer must go. We just started this season off a bit differently, with 4 gone by the 1st episode’s end. But as we bidded adieu to three designers, one was “welcomed” to the fold. America casted their votes for the Runway Redemption candidates, Ken Laurence (Season 12), Alexander Pope (Season 12), and Amanda Valentine (Season 11). I’m generally not a fan of mixing new cast members with old ones, and this is for any competitive reality show. But I always considered Season 11 a bit unfair; it was very different than every other season. And I think if the designers weren’t forced to work in groups the entire season and further, were not eliminated based on those groupings, the season might have turned out differently. So just as I rooted for Katelyn Pankoke to come back last season, my choice this year was Amanda Valentine, and it was for the same reason. So I was very happy Amanda was the one chosen! With 16 designers ready to go, it was time for them to get their 1st challenge!

The designers were to create one piece this week that would give the judges a glimpse of what their Spring 2015 collection might look like. There was of course a huge twist though, “a trunk of doom!” Each designer was given a trunk with 5 fabric options, not likely their 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd choices! The designers didn’t have the same fabrics so they were left to just create or get to bartering! I think the other designers didn’t want to give the vet much help though, so it seemed as if Amanda wasn’t able to play the trade-game. And as per PR usual, the challenge only allowed for one day so the designers were off to quickly work! Tim was also back to his norm PR mentor status, giving a great mix of helpful advice.

pr13-ep1-episode15                       pr13-ep1-episode23Back in the workroom we were already seeing a few gossip sessions going on, mainly Mitchell & Korina — highly doubt they will be the only ones though! Mitchell redeemed himself somewhat, very nice of him to help out Sandhya when he finished his look. There were very interesting moments during the model fittings this week — many designers not ready and making some determinations as to what could be hanging out a little (side-boob, etc.)! The most stress and time management issues came from Angela & Sandhya this week, but no worries, no naked models went down the runway! Sooner rather than later it was time for the runway show. Heidi announced the Tim Gunn save would be back this season and that the prize package this year was over $300K. The judges were joined this week by Emmy award winning “Modern Family” actress Julie Bowen. With so many designers presenting this week, it had to be tough naming a top and bottom 3. It was no surprise that this was where even more shockers came to fruition.

pr13-ep1-episode43

There were certainly a lot of safe looks this week. Many will have to step it up — I will hold off on names for now! But two looks I thought stood out and I was surprised weren’t given any top contention, were Korina’s tomato red look & Sean’s chic knee-length dress, pure minimalism at its best. I guess that is what happens though when you have 4 different judges scoring 16 designers!

pr13-rr-ep1-sk-f     PR1301-Korina-Emmerich-1-900x1350The bottom 3 wasn’t so surprising, but because of its unpredictability with so many designers, I was going to be shocked no matter who went home. Angela’s 2-piece look certainly had some mistakes, but I saw some other mistakes go down the runway too. There was a lot going on in this look, and with how much airtime she got this week, you could definitely see her bottom 3 placement coming! But I wouldn’t peg her as a repeat offender quite yet. I think she can bounce back!

pr13-rr-ep1-as-f

Mitchell was another bottom 3 placement I wasn’t so surprised by. Tim wasn’t a fan of this look either. I think he mixed his fabric choices well, but the look was very basic, definitely not a show-stopper. It also seemed very “junior” and for this show, that is not what the judges are looking for.

pr13-ep1-episode36

The big surprise of the bottom 3 was not Jefferson’s placement, but that he went home. I was not a fan of his prior work because I’m not a fan of drop crotch pants. The main issue with this look was exactly what Nina said — proportions, mainly, the shorts were toooooooo short! I don’t think he should have gone home though. But Heidi seemed to not dislike Mitchell’s look quite as much as the others so I’m guessing Heidi had the final say-so on this one!

pr13-ep1-episode37

While the bottom was not so jaw-dropping, the top 3 was a completely different story. I, like pretty much every other designer, thought Sandhya was for sure in the bottom. I didn’t think she would go home, but to find out she was in the top, needless to say I was stunned. However, later finding out she was the night’s winner, I kind of went from shocked to disappointed. In certain PR seasons, the judges hang onto a fave (Patricia Michaels, Anya Ayoung-Chee, Alexandria von Bromssen). America is not always on the same page! I’m hoping Sandhya is not that token fave this season that will get by with work such as this just because the judges have drank some crazy Kool-aid and are in a love-fest! The judges said Angela’s look had far too much going on, well what the heck do they think this is — frayed edges, capped sleeves, dyes, prints, etc. Based off of Sandhya’s prior work, I also don’t think anything in her collection would look like this. And also, with this floral curtain-like print, the dye, the color chosen, it just looks like a stained old piece of drapery. I am still completely baffled by this decision, but that’s PR for you!

pr13-ep1-episode35

I think based on the task at hand and with who the judges picked for the top 3, Char should have won. This looked like a piece Char would actually have in her collection and it also read “Spring!”

pr13-ep1-episode34_0

But Amanda too had a very chic and well put together look. If this is the new Amanda aesthetic, I can’t wait to see more. I’m not sure if it screamed “Spring”, but I could see it being in Amanda’s wheelhouse. And I disagree with Julie on the use of the pattern. A basic top and pants would have been a yawner! But the print made the pants pop and I was also impressed by the great fit they had.

pr13-rr-ep1-av-f

And finally, just like my UTG posts, I will name a stand-out for Aldo accessories, Mary-Kay beauty looks, and Philip B. hair looks!

pr13-rr-ep1-fzg-f     For my stand-out Aldo accessories look, I pick  fäde zu grau — statement jewelry pieces (bracelet & necklace), but not over-the-top or overshadowing the look, & simple, elegant black heels. I also think he did a great job of intermixing his printed fabrics for the skirt portion of his dress.

pr13-rr-ep1-hl-f    For my standout Philip B. hair & Mary Kay make-up look, it’s one in the same — Hernan Lander — chic ponytail & clean, fresh beauty look/

UTG Designers & Their Beach Party!!

1-dibs-on-the-coconut-bra

That’s right! This week on Under the Gunn, the designers started off at the beach! Of course you might think fun in the sun & let’s go surfin’ now, but……..naturally, the setting was just part of the challenge! This week, Tim Gunn, in his nifty flip flops/sandals, delved out the designer instructions for the ever-popular UNCONVENTIONAL challenge. The materials?? — All the decorations and beach items used to decorate for the beach party! The concept was to create a beach-inspired look perfect for the LA beach woman. It was a free-for-all with the run & grab for materials, so how did it all pan out???

2-oh-oscar

The designers were off to the workroom to begin their 1-day challenge. It was quickly time for the mentors’ round-up and we saw some early frustrations! Mondo & Sam were experiencing some difficulties. Sam was stuck in a rut, pretty much, and Mondo was urging him to go a different route. Nick too had to step up with his designers and was really doing a great job in handing out words of wisdom. Oscar had 2 looks, which Nick advised were not working, and so Oscar had to work with a change of design direction as well.

UTG01-ep8-episode17

The models soon thereafter came in for their fittings. It was quite a different vibe this week. Many designers were feeling out frustrations and as always, in a crunch for the time. But the mentors worked a bit differently; they left the designers to just work it all out. The morning of the runway quickly approached and a lot of craziness & doubts were still running rampant, leaving the viewers to wonder how the top & bottom would fall into place for the week!?!

UTG01-ep8-episode10

The judging panel was oddly enough a repeat from last week as Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman joined celebrity stylist Jen Rade, Marie Claire editor Zanna Roberts Rassi, well sans Zanna I guess, but also, designer Rachel Roy. Again nice to see Georgina since we missed her ever so much on PRAS!! So the materials this week were beach-y items. Tim was quick to remind the designers at the start to think outside the box, don’t be literal with the materials, and let their meanings transcend what they actually are. So what did this all mean for the finished products??? Let’s begin with the “safe zone”!!

UTG01-ep8-episode30

The designers started out the episode with a re-hash of the Anya/Nicholas debacle from last week. The designers were upset about the surprise accusations, but the mentors seemed to be all on team Anya, even Tim! I guess all is well that ends well because Anya’s team was safe & sound this week. There were definitely a lot of great looks this week, but I have to say, Blake’s look of woven table liners and straw decorations should not be forgotten. The less colorful items seemed to be on top, I guess with a more streamlined focus to construction and with that, Blake’s belted look certainly fit that bill. I think this is a major Blake come-back so wishing him luck for next week! SHOUT-OUTS to Francesca’s for the gold dangling earrings & multi-colored bracelet & Benefit Cosmetics for the golden eyes & lips for a, haha, Golden beauty look!

UTG108-1096

Shan on the other hand I think should feel a bit lucky because with maybe 1 judge scoring differently, his beach umbrella & inflatable raft look could have been in the bottom. There was hardly any design concept here. It was also quite boring! Many of the top looks weren’t there because of a bold color or overly-dramatic sentiment, but were there because of innovative design-work & great construction, considering the materials used. But Shan’s look didn’t encompass any of this! SHOUT-OUT though to Blowpro for the lovely side-swept do of flowing beachy waves!

UTG108-0904

Continuing with the bad news, let’s look at the actual bottom looks!

I was not sure who was going home this week for the bottom. I know who I wanted, but 2 designers I enjoy watching were here in the bottom, one being Natalia. She again worked with a braiding technique for her raffia & beach umbrella look, and I could see where she was aiming, just disappointed with a lack of time as she was so rushed. This look kind of reminded me of her 1st look of the season, a bit under-developed, a little short, but it had potential. I still see that with Natalia and unlike someone such as Shan this week, I at least appreciated her concept for some design! SHOUT-OUT to Blowpro for some more luscious flowing beach waves!

UTG108-1216

With Natalia safe I was still on pins & needles, wondering if another designer fave of mine, Michelle, would be out this week?? Luckily….. No! However, the judges were still not in love with her brightly color-blocked look of inflatable rafts! With colors such as hot pink & bright sky blue, the look could go either way in a judge’s eye. Many past PR designers were known for looks of bright colors and off-the-wall prints, and were praised, ahem Mondo! Could it look a bit junior, a little too youthful, maybe, but I thought there were a few positives here. The fit was great and I appreciated some color in a sea of nudes & tans. I also liked the use of the colors in a color-blocked set-up, which is an ever-popular trend. I guess better luck next week to Michelle, but glad she is still here! SHOUT-OUT to Blowpro for a gorgeous straightened side-swept look!

UTG108-1150

With Natalia & Michelle safe, that left Stephanie rounding out the bottom & ultimately going home. I never root for someone to go home, but Stephanie has yet to have a standout moment yet. With that said, Michelle has so it made more sense in my eyes that it was Stephanie’s time. She had a great idea with the “melting of leis” and it was certainly a look that inspired fun with popping colors. The differences for me, with this look and that of Michelle’s, was some issues with construction, fit, a less modern silhouette, and Stephanie’s was far more junior. SHOUT-OUT to Francesca’s for the nude sandal heels.

UTG108-0975

It was great to see Oscar in the top again, especially after his rough start. His structured look of a beach mat and straw fans made my jaw drop; I was in awe!! I think that is the point with unconventional challenges, to make the mind wonder and I applaud Oscar for doing just that! The look was just so chic, clean lines, & superb construction considering he was using straw fans! SHOUT-OUTS to Blowpro for the retro beach look of golden waves; Francesca’s for the elegant golden hoop earrings; & Benefit Cosmetics for the bold & dramatic beauty look of a slight smoky eye & glistening nude lip.

UTG108-1293

It had to have been a tough call this week for the top, but Oscar didn’t make top 2; Asha was the fortunate runner-up this week. I definitely was impressed with this textile printed look of straw decorations, woven table liners, palm leaves, & leis. It’s always nice to see a designer branch out, be innovative and that is what Asha did with creating her own print/textile. SHOUT-OUTS TO Benefit Cosmetics for the slight smoky eye & pop of color on the lip; & Francesca’s for maybe the fun printed clutch, gold necklace, & gold cuff (not sure if any of this Asha created, but I’m sure one of the 3 items is from Francesca’s!)

UTG108-0864

But the big winner this week was the comeback kid, no more Mr. Safe, Sam! And I mean big as in he not only won for best look, the 5k, but also the random 1K Benefit Cosmetics gives out this season. This week, the prize was awarded for the look the judges thought was the most fun & free spirited, and that, along with the top look was Sam. This was again nice to see since he too had a rough beginning! But really the judges slacked a bit on adjudicating by letting Mondo pick the winner between his 2 designers. We’ve seen this as Anya has chosen twice now between who to send home. Big difference though in picking a winner versus who to eliminate — Mondo’s designer is still here and I can’t imagine this made Asha feel to great! But back to Sam for his well-deserved win….

His fit & flared look was created with the use of a bamboo beach mat, a beach chair, & a pineapple (check out the clutch!). This was definitely a fun look and perfect for any willing beach bunny! SHOUT-OUTS TO Blowpro for the side-swept loosely fit ponytail; & Francesca’s for the statement heels & cool shades!

UTG108-1056

STAY TUNED FOR MORE UNDER THE GUNN NEXT WEEK!!

UTG Designers Present Their Take on Red Carpet Fashion

The Under the Gunn designers for this week took on red carpet creations, which is quite fitting since we are in the midst of all the red carpet glitz & glam (Grammy’s, Golden Globes, etc.),. The designers started off the episode with a Hollywood bus tour from Starline to help provide some Hollywood glamour inspiration for their red carpet look. UTG judge & Sr. Fashion Editor of Marie Claire Zanna Roberts-Rossi was alongside Tim Gunn this week to hand out the designers marching orders.

HollywoodTour_busZanna encouraged the designers to make their challenge look dynamic and eye-catching. Why? Well the winning look this week would at some point be worn by an unknown celeb (kind of vague?) and pics of the celeb would be put in Marie Claire. A few other bits of general information for this week’s episode — we saw the designers would be living it up this season in LA at the Apex Apartments. Of course we knew this was going to be a tough challenge with only 1 day to complete the look!! And with that the designers were off to Mood with a $200 budget.

I wonder if this season in every episode we are going to have a designer who flagrantly violates the rules?? Last week it was Isabelle in the workroom/sewing room and this week it was Camila at Mood. All of the designers were checked out, in line, or ready to go all while Camila was still gathering and cutting fabrics. Tim has had to raise his voice now twice though at certain designers so I say — LET’S GET IT TOGETHER!!

The designers were then back to the workroom to start off a day of chaos & craziness! Tim came by to first check on the mentors and with that let’s go ahead and get all the Nick drama out this week. So Tim took notice of Nick’s mentoring style very early on this week — from the bus to the workroom. The mentors however didn’t go to Mood and that made sense, probably too many cooks in the kitchen! But Tim had some firm words too for Nick this week. We saw Nick helping sketch, working with patterns, draping muslin, etc. It starts the debate of how much mentoring is too much?

Hollywood_MondoNickAnyaAnya & Mondo certainly had a bit more of a laid back approach. But you have to wonder how well does that work out since Mondo had 2 designers in the bottom this week? I definitely think there needs to be a balance though, a line. You have to help, but not give the answers. I think Nick, being a teacher and all, is struggling a bit with the balance. But, I think if he just took a few steps back he can definitely MAKE IT WORK! Mondo however, I think could serve to take 1 step forward. He could stand to be a bit more involved. I’m still not sure about Anya’s mentoring. I just felt her advice was so vague and she too could amp it up a bit. But hey, mentoring is not easy and it’s a learning curve so I’m eager to see how each progresses.

Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Mondo-Designers                                     Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Nick-DesignersThis show has a bit of an odd balance though, lots going on. There is focus on the mentors & that mentoring aspect, but the focus has to be on the designers, as well. It was hard this week because there were designers I felt we didn’t even see until their models hit the runway — Asha, Oscar, even Brady. Speaking of models, so funny watching their 1st fittings this week and Shan was certainly in for a large surprise, large breasts on his model that is!

Under-The-Gunn-Episode-03-Team-Anya-DesignersIt was then finally the day of the runway and what do we see, another designer choosing to not go to the bathroom?? So funny and yes, I had to mention this. While Isabelle was at Mood they aired her saying she had to really go, but ultimately decided to wait. Then again, on the day of the runway, Shan was aired saying he had to go, but again, would hold it! Time for the runway though and Tim announced 1 more fun surprise for this week and the rest of the season. The winning designer each week would receive $5,000, WOW! This is a nice treat just in the event you win a couple of challenges, but don’t win the show; at least you would walk away with something.

UTG01-ep3-episode3The judges (celeb stylist Jen Rade, designer Rachel Roy, & fashion editor Zanna) only discussed 6 looks this week — a top & bottom 3. Thus, not much attention to the rest, which left a lot of designers lost in translation. I would say to Nicholas & Asha, congrats on being safe this week, but there is definitely still some room for improvement!

utg-nk-ep3-sketch                         utg-ad-ep3-sketch

  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — Love these black strapped heels on Asha’s model!

I love Brady’s girl and I could see a young hot celeb like Miley or Zendaya rocking that look. My only thought would be to maybe not do the full print on both pieces, maybe use a solid top or bottom with the print? But I can’t wait to see more! It’s clear though that we were seeing creations for a wide range of red carpets, going from Brady’s casual street style to full on glitz & glam with Natalia or Oscar, whose looks I also liked — great fit, gorgeous lines, striking looks. Let’s look at the top 3 for this week now!

utg-bl-ep3-sketch

  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — love the purple metallic shoes!
  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — One of my fave ways to wear my own hair, the side braided ponytail

utg-rr-ep3-nf-f_0                 utg-rr-ep3-nf-b_1                 utg-rr-ep3-ogl-b_0

  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — Both blondes, great job on the hair, retroglam & modern chic!
  • BENEFIT COSMETICS SHOUTOUT — Love the pop of red on the lip w/ Natalia’s model & the makeup for Oscar’s, it’s just so fresh & clean, simply beautiful & stunning!
  • FRANCESCA’S SHOUTOUT — Oscar’s model, the gold triangle earrings, perfect touch!

utg-ogl-ep3-sketchI’m sure it was tough to judge for the top 3 this week. I was surprised that this was the top 3; I was sure Natalia, Oscar, or Brady, at least one, would be there. But it’s clear the judges went for the more risky or daring looks this week, perhaps those a bit more unique. Shan’s look was definitely one to push the boundaries. I mean, those boobs could have easily fallen out! I wasn’t a fan of this look, but it was something different. The print was just a bit too much for me and a little too much boob-age. But the back of the blazer was a surprising touch with an open back and I did like that element!

utg-sko-ep3-sketchBlake was a surprise for me this week, but ultimately it made sense. I completely agreed with the judges. We see it all throughout red carpet season, these bold, different, and unique looks — reference J.Law pretty much any time so far this red carpet season! People either really love it or really hate it. The look could be on Glamour Mag’s best dressed or on E Fashion Police’s worst dressed list. The look was very soft, light, & airy.

utg-rr-ep3-bs-f

  • SHOUTOUTS ALL AROUND! — Blowpro w/ the sweeping updo; Francesca’s with the clear clutch; Benefit cosmetics with the clean look & nude lip!

I was still though so ecstatic for Sam this week! I’ve been searching myself for an amazing jumpsuit for fashion week and it’s so funny that is what he designed for this week! I thought this look was fantastically phenomenal. It would work wonders on a wide variety of red carpets. The back was done so beautifully and many women could wear this. If I could have any wish for it though, I might would want the neckline a bit deeper, maybe steal some boobage showing from Shan’s look!?! One thing I know is I can’t wait to see more!

utg-rr-ep3-sd-f

  • Francesca’s — again, great job with the accessories — the necklace & open-toed booties!!

Now to the more depressing side of the show — the bottom 3, which was so weird this week because usually they send the designer home last, but the announcement this week was reversed? Let’s begin with Michelle who even though was in the bottom, I knew she was not going home. I did agree with Tim and his comment about the hoo-hah focal point diamond, but Michelle did have some great elements this week. They just didn’t all come together in such a short time. I loved the popping red color and I thought the fit was great, but to me it was just a little to basic. I’m not counting this gal out yet though!

UTG103-Michelle-Uberreste-Look-Front

  • BLOWPRO SHOUTOUT — love the structured ponytail!

I completely agree with the remainder of the bottom 3. I was a bit surprised though that Camila was the one to go, but it wasn’t undeserving. This look was just far too basic and what she tried to make special with the back of the dress really just looked sloppy. The top part being sheer would have been far more sufficient and efficient than the draping bow-looking thing down the back. If she is that unsure of the fabrics and the host of other excuses she gave then maybe she is not quite ready for a show of this caliber yet.
