Goodbye PR Season 13 & Hello PRAS Season 4!

So this week, with the whole Project Runway franchise arena, we are bidding farewell to PR season 13, all the ups and downs. But no worries since it’s also time to welcome back PR All-Stars, season 4! Before season 4 officially kicked off there was a special reunion episode with the outgoing PR season. I could really do an entire post on that alone! Drama was re-visited. Disputes were settled. Indeed, a great deal was in store as the designers sat back down with each other. We did learn that Amanda received a $5000 cash prize for using the Aldo accessory wall the best during the season. I remember often giving her an Aldo shout-out on my recaps so congrats to her! But all in all with the reunion, it was great to watch and see how everyone was doing. Very happy to know Korina is going to be having some pieces at Lord & Taylor — that’s AWESOME!! But moving on now to PRAS, I’m excited to blog about this upcoming season and it looks like we will be in for some drama, spectacular creations, and much more! I’m excited & can’t wait!!

10697175_10154749439765524_3786656686648961950_o

The episode kicked off as all of the designers came together at Grand Central Terminal in NYC. From season 12 we had Justin LeBlanc, Alexandria von Bromssen, and Helen Castillo. Some tensions were revisited between Helen & Alexandria. Will there be more of that this season?!? Only time will tell, but of course more designers were ready to make their entrances. Kate Pankoke was on both season 12 & 11. So she was reunited with the group above, but also with fellow castmates from season 11, what I dub as “the dreaded groups season”, which included for this all-star cast, Benjamin Mach, Patricia Michaels, and Samantha Black. We also saw quite a few designers from Season 10, Fabio Costa, Gunnar Deatherage, and Sonjia Williams. Oh, and then one designer, having to go a bit further back seasons-wise, we have Chris March.

The Grand Central Station

Returning host & judge Alyssa Milano was there to greet everyone with a few surprises. One being that she was expecting, which fits perfectly with PR & PRAS’s theme of “expect the unexpected”!

pras4-ep1-episode16

But another huge surprise was that these designers would also be working with 2 previous winners, Dmitry Sholokhov and Michelle Lesniak. So note, if the competition was not already tight, they would now have to all step up their game even more! This goes for the winning designers too as they have titles to defend. The designers also were reminded to always be on their game as there would be no immunity, yikes! There would however be some prizes along the way. Gotham West would be the designer’s new home.

pras4-ep1-episode11

The challenge this week was all about NYC, to create a collection inspired by the uptown or the downtown scene. The collection aspect of course meant group challenge. And with an equal number of men and women, what would make better sense than to pit the girls against the guys. The designers had to think collection, think cohesion, but ultimately, each would be responsible for their own look. Being in Grand Central, a subway token decided the fate of the teams. Dmitry called gold-side on the flip, he got it, and the guys chose downtown, leaving the women with the uptown girl. There would be a losing team and a winning one. From the losing team, a designer would go home, and from the winning side we would of course have a winner. Each team would have a $1500 budget and it was up to the groups on how to split it. And no surprise, there would only be 1 day to accomplish this all!

subway token

The groups were off to their locations with an hour to chat and find inspiration. The women went uptown and were thinking of a classy girl, but with some edge. They were creating for a socialite party girl. Hanging around The Plaza Hotel provided a great deal of inspiration with colors and the vibe. The men went downtown and were thinking of a raw, edgy girl. It was surprising to see from the guys’ team the first bit of tension as some of the men were worried about Ben’s outfit looking more uptown than downtown. Everyone was then off to Mood with 30 minutes to shop. I would have loved to see more on the decisions of how the budget was divided up — was it equal? Oh well, back to the workroom we go!

pras4-ep1-episode9

The workroom was dope — decked out with the QVC accessory wall, Brother sewing room, relaxing lounge, and kitchen area. It was nice to take in some luxe workroom aspects, but it is still a workroom so quick to work went the designers. As the guys were unpacking, Fabio learned his fabric was missing. There was no clue as to what exactly happened, but a plan was put in place and everyone handled the situation professionally. As the men were starting to gel, the women then seemed to show some tensions. Just as the guys were worried about Ben, Alexandria was concerned Kate’s look didn’t fit with their collection. Some of the ladies were concerned about Patricia and her working process, as we saw many times during Patricia’s first PR stint. Next up, Zanna-time!

pras4-ep1-episode15

I thought her comments were spot on. She reminded a few to keep their theme of uptown or downtown in mind. She too reiterated some of the guys’ concern with Benjamin’s piece and from that, he knew some changes were needed. Also with a couple of the guys, Zanna wanted to make sure the looks were not too short! Zanna reminded the designers of how important styling was. She introduced to them that Chi Hair Care and Mary Kay cosmetics teams would be on board for this season to help with all of their styling needs!

pras4-ep1-episode14

As the first day came to end, many thought it was over way too soon, another no surprise moment for the episode! The morning of continued with a little more last minute craziness. The designers were off to receive their styling help. The ladies went for the same beauty look, thinking of spring, so going fresh and sunny, with a citrus lip from Mary Kay. The guys gave us the inside scoop on their hair look regime, wanting a stylized look, but something that looked as if the girl did it themselves, all courtesy of Chi hair care. It was soon time for the runway where Alyssa introduced to the designers what would be in the store for the winner. It is a truly phenomenal prize package consisting of

  • the chance to create their own capsule collection with QVC and appear during QVC’s Spring Fashion Week programming;
  • a fashion spread in Marie Claire and a position at the magazine as Contributing Editor for one year;
  • CHI Haircare will send the winner to stay in a luxury spa resort as a special guest at their International conference in Cancun, Mexico, plus product and staff for entire year of runway shows;
  • from Mary Kay, an entire year’s worth of beauty products for their fashion shows and professional makeup artist services for their debut show;
  • a cash prize of $150,000 and
  • a complete custom sewing & crafting studio to launch the designer’s winning line from Brother Sewing and Embroidery.

The designers were also introduced to returning judges, talented designers Isaac Mizrahi & Georgina Chapman of Marchesa. This week’s guest judge was Ivanka Trump, successful businesswoman, and too a designer, with her own apparel and accessories brand. After the runway, it was announced that Ivanka would don the winning look.

pras4-ep1-episode17

As far as which team won this week, I really thought it could go either way. Both teams had some hits and misses. I thought the ladies had a more cohesive collection, but the men had more innovative designs. I did like a few more of the women’s looks though, more my style. Both teams had looks with execution issues though so a few will have to step it up or they will be out sooner rather than later! Let’s start with the winning team, drumroll please, THE GUYS!

pras4-ep1-episode20The judges were right with their top 3 choices, Fabio, Chris, and Benjamin. Fabio was the ultimate winner, but I think Benjamin had the winning piece.

pras4-ep1-bm

I think from where Benjamin was originally at, no asymmetry, the more ladylike neckline, this was a drastic turnaround and he really made it work. I think it was the piece that maybe didn’t fit quite so well in the guys’ collection, but as a standalone, it was a knockout. Most of the guys thought downtown, and went literal, lower east-side or east village. Benjamin rightfully remembered in downtown there is also Soho, Tribeca, FiDi. Great back, wonderful movement, a great piece from Benjamin indeed! Also, love the black bracelet, great choice from the QVC accessory wall!

pras4-ep1-fc

The judges however selected Fabio as the winner. He also had a stunning look from the back! And don’t get me wrong, I was very much impressed with this jumpsuit. This was far better than anything I remember from Fabio during his season of PR. But for this look, I could have done without the cinched waist and dangling piece on the front. And to also mention for the guys, shoutout for the distressed, yet chic look with the hair, courtesy of Chi hair care. But I think both teams got it wrong with beauty/make-up looks this week. So for the guys, the eyes just had way too much make-up on them. It looked more like morning after eyes than the original “going out” look.

pras4-ep1-cm

I also loved Chris’s work this week so I was happy to see him land in the top 3. I want this skirt! I loved the layers, the safety pin detail, the leather, just everything about it, I’m a fan. I can’t say this leather top was deserving of such a rave, but he still very much deserved his top 3 placement. He also gets a QVC shout-out for perfectly pairing his look with these knee-high black boots. So funny, I really wanted a pair of these myself this week for my Halloween costume!

-project-runway--all

So with the ladies dubbed as the losing team, we had a bottom 3 consisting of Kate, Michelle, and Patricia.

pras4-ep1-episode21

But because the ladies as a whole were on the bottom, no standout looks from their team received any praise. No worries! I can take care of that. First, for Helen, I mean WOW! She could have won with this look. The fit, the execution, such clean lines, it was all spot on perfection. Breathtaking!

pras4-ep1-hc

I can almost guarantee this was a split-type look when it came to the judges’ scoring. Some will love it. Others won’t. That point of debate is likely over this iridescent fabric. Personally, I’m a fan. I love the pairing with this faded green. I think the back was cut beautifully. Also, shoutout for the QVC heels!

pras4-ep1-sw

And a surprise for me, I really loved Alexandria’s top this week. I wasn’t a fan during her season, but this top was spectacular. I don’t think its pairing with this ivory floor-length skirt works with the collection’s vibe of an uptown girl, but shout-out nonetheless is owed for this top. My thought is if the women had landed on top, this would be the top 3, likely Helen winning! I will also mention now the styling choices for the ladies’ team. Just as with the guys, shout-out for the hair, very chic up-do by Chi hair care. But the beauty look, not right for the uptown girl at all. The citrus lip, bad choice. I would have gone with a nude lip or light pink, but I guess the ladies were trying to insert a bright pop of color. Something just looked off with this color choice though.

pras4-ep1-ab

But alas, the girls were the bottom group this week so let’s discuss the bottom 3. Michelle was a surprise with ending up in the bottom. She won her season. And all episode all we heard was how much she didn’t like Kate’s look, yet her look was just so luxe, with high priced suede. And for her girl, she just had so much money to spend. The problem, this wouldn’t be a dress a girl would want to spend her loads of money on. Ivanka was a fan, but I agree with the other judges. This fabric didn’t look so high quality and expensive.

pras4-ep1-ml

This left Kate & Patricia in the bottom 2. I was also surprised Kate landed in the bottom. I’m a fan of Kate and her work. I’ve followed her success since her time on PR. She creates such beautiful bridal gowns. But this look did have a bit too much going on. The slit in the back, the overworked bust, etc. I know she can bounce back though so I think it was the right decision she stayed this week. Shout-out for the QVC metallic silver heels!

pras4-ep1-kp

Patricia was unfortunately the first to go. She had many issues going on. If you look back at any of her previous work, you would have no clue as to how this look below would fit in that aesthetic. It didn’t read Patricia at all. During the episode, all we saw Patricia working on was some leather detailed work, which was nowhere to be seen on this piece. All she had was a plain boring ivory A-line dress trimmed in black. This bottom 2 represents what many PR bottom twos consist of, a look of too much and one of too little. The look of “too little” generally goes home and that, in a nutshell, is why Patricia was out.

pras4-ep1-pm

Very much can’t wait to see how this season plays out!!

PR All-Stars Season 4 Intro, Let’s Go…..

10697175_10154749439765524_3786656686648961950_o

Season 4 of PRAS starts back this week, and we will be in for some high designer talent and dramatic action. I’ve seen the preview once and I do feel we are in for a good season, some great looks, exciting challenges, and more! I always still have a teensy issue with why for only 13 seasons of PR that we are already at such a high # of all-star seasons. Generally, all-star seasons for reality shows are every once in awhile, truly encapsulating the best of the best. I think PR gets a pass, it’s the exception to the rule. In any given season of PR, great talent can go home too early. And even by the time we reach the finale, there is only 1 winner. This means there are still so many in the top 2 or 3 that were worthy of the title. But really, PRAS is a great fix for all of us true, diehard fans of PR. I am one of them and am very much ready to see what Season 4 has in store for us!

judge-pras4-300x300-alyssa

Returning as this season’s host and judge, we have the very talented actress, Alyssa Milano. Also returning as judges, two very amazing designers, Isaac Mizrahi & Georgina Chapman of Marchesa. And one other familiar face, returning as this season’s mentor, the female Tim Gunn, we have Senior Fashion Editor at Marie Claire, Zanna Roberts Rassi.

judge-pras4-300x300-georgina

What’s in store for Season 4? Well of course we don’t know all of the fun details quite yet. But what we do know is 14 of the most talented “Project Runway” designers are returning to compete in the biggest and most competitive “Project Runway All Stars” season ever! In this cut-throat season, former standout designers come back to New York to compete for runway gold (#PRAllStars), premiering Thursday, October 30, at 9pm ET/PT. The designers will be in for a little surprise since 2 former winners are joining the mix, Dmitry Sholokhov and Michelle Lesniak, making for an even tougher competition.

judge-pras4-300x300-zanna

Some of the biggest names in fashion and entertainment make up this year’s A-list celebrity guest judges including Emmy® Award nominee Laverne Cox of “Orange is the New Black,” Emmy winner Debra Messing, “Modern Family’sAriel Winter, Academy Award® winner Mira Sorvino, singer Nicole Scherzinger, Emmy nominated host Cat Deeley, reality stars Snooki and JWoww, celebrity photographer Nigel Barker, QVC® Program Host Lisa Robertson and many others. Designers appearing this season include Betsey Johnson, Michael Bastian, Elie Tahari, and Ivanka Trump, and special appearances by “Project Runway” judges Nina Garcia and Zac Posen.

judge-pras4-300x300-isaac

This season’s highlights include a surprise visit to London for a challenge featuring British royalty, a collaboration with Broadway’s “Wicked”, and the first ever wedding ceremony live on the runway. And this year’s prize package, not disappointing at all! I mean at least compared to the actual season of PR we just had, a Red Robin fashion accessory, still SMH on that on!

  • the chance to create their own capsule collection with QVC and appear during QVC’s Spring Fashion Week programming;
  • a fashion spread in Marie Claire and a position at the magazine as Contributing Editor for one year;
  • CHI Haircare will send the winner to stay in a luxury spa resort as a special guest at their International conference in Cancun, Mexico, plus product and staff for entire year of runway shows;
  • More Mary Kay!!, With an entire year’s worth of beauty products for their fashion shows and professional makeup artist services for their debut show;
  • a cash prize of $150,000 and
  • a complete custom sewing studio to launch the designer’s winning line from Brother Sewing and Embroidery.

Here is the full list of this season’s contestants, what they’ve been up to and some recent work! ENJOY!!

Kate Pankoke    cast_300x300_pras4_kate_0

Kate is a great friend of Fashion Nexus. I’ve been happy to cover her bridal collection for Elaya Vaughn in the past. In fact, I will soon be getting another piece out very soon!

14_akiana_front-500x666

She’s been doing a lot of bridal, which I’m sure will translate nicely to eveningwear or red carpet looks if need be. But I’m also ready to see her back to doing some great RTW, such as what she showcased during her redemption season.

kate-pankoke-project-runway-12-finale-gi

cast_300x300_pras4_dmitry_0    Dmitry Sholokhov

Dmitry is a PR winner, from season 10, seeing if he can take home the title twice! On top of winning PR, he does host a great many other award recognitions —  GenART Award, Saga Furs Design Competition Award, Gap Design Competition Award, showcase at Debut, winner of 24 Hour Cat Walk (lifetime), amongst others.

look12-1

With winning PR, he designed a capsule collection for Lord & Taylor. I was able to attend, meet him, and gaze at all of his amazing looks! I loved them all!

Helen Castillo    cast_300x300_pras4_helen_0

Helen was on season 12, eliminated right before making it to the finale, likely one of the worst feelings for anyone on this show. The judges weren’t sure she was quite ready. She is now back to prove them wrong! Some redemption maybe?

Helen-Castillo-Mary-Lambert-Grammy-Dresses

As seen above, the talented singer/songwriter Mary Lambert loves her some Helen Castillo!

cast_300x300_pras4_michelle_0   Michelle Lesniak

Michelle is another winner coming back for this PRAS season. She won the dreaded groups season of PR, season 11. This was a task certainly worthy of commending!

home1

Michelle is committed to staying in her native hometown of Portland. Dedicated to local manufacturing and ethical business practices, Michelle is undoubtedly playing a key role in shaping and growing the Portland Fashion Industry.

Benjamin Mach          cast_300x300_pras4_benjamin_0

Poor Benjamin was on the dreaded group’s season of PR, season 11. I think he got lost working in this capacity. I saw plenty of his work before PR and I expected him to be on the show for quite awhile. I’m thinking sans group we will see more and better work from him!

BMFW14IMAGE1c

He officially launched his own line earlier this year. His capsule collection is influenced by the art deco era and takes inspiration from the chic and timeless style of Halston in his heyday and the urbanely sensual approach of Vionnet and her technical innovation.

Chris March      cast_300x300_pras4_chris_0

March was a finalist on PR way back when, like way back to the Bravo days, Season 4 to be exact! But he has certainly kept himself busy. Many major celebs have donned his garments — Beyonce, Madonna, & Meryl Streep, just to name a few.

GYI0057745030_xxlarge

He developed and starred in his own show on Bravo in 2011, Mad Fashion. He’s also had an exclusive Halloween partnership with Target!

cast_300x300_pras4_justin_0    Justin LeBlanc

Justin hails from my hometown, good ole’ Raleigh, NC. I’ve attended NYFW, the PR show once, and I was so glad to see many great pieces come down the runway, including some from Justin!

Samantha Black    cast_300x300_pras4_sam_0

Samantha has kept quite busy since season 11 of PR, putting out collections, dressing celebs such as Keri Hilson, and more.

Keri+Hilson+Clothes+TmgqhsgVw0Dl

She is all about feminine, modern, sexy urban appeal. How will this translate to her work on PRAS, can’t wait to see!

cast_300x300_pras4_sonjia_0    Sonjia Williams

Sonjjia has been designing, blogging, and more since PR, season 10. She seems to have focused a great deal on outerwear, very luxe looking and tons of layers!

She also creates pieces for Annabelle NY.

Gunnar Deatherage         cast_300x300_pras4_gunnar_0

Season 10 has quite a few familiar faces, Gunnar included. He definitely brought a little sass to his season, very interested to see what all he will bring to PRAS! His 2014 RTW collection launch coincides perfectly with premiere of PRAS, what a kawinkydink!

cast_300x300_pras4_jay_0    Jay Sario

Going back to season 7, Jay worked great with prints, as well as with bold pops of color!

cast_300x300_pras4_alexandria_0   Alexandria von Bromssen

Alexandria was a force to be reckoned with during her time on PR. Here are some of her pieces from her fashion week collection as a finalist on PR Season 12. She was a tough cookie. I’m looking to see how she’s grown in the last year, so no more drop crotch pants!!

PR1214-1500-900x1350

cast_300x300_pras4_patricia_0    Patricia Michaels

Patricia was quite an interesting character on her season of PR, again, the dreaded groups season. Being on stronger groups definitely helped this lady out. She won’t have that on PRAS, so can she step it up solo?!?

5c239babc3b319a0c5463b03650ecf65

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, of TV’S hit show Modern Family and longtime fan of Project Runway, was so impressed with Patricia’s performance on the show, he asked her to be a Guest Designer for his line of JTF Bowties. She’s also taken in part in numerous speaking engagements and designing away since her 1st stint on PR.

patriciamichaels

Fabio Costa      cast_300x300_pras4_fabio_0

Fabio was a finalist on season 10, creating looks with a very distinct and unique POV. He co-founded a brand, NotEqual, which has been donned by celebrities such as Chris Brown and America’s Next Top Model star Allison Harvard.

EA_At Not_Equal-27

He creates looks for both men and women. PRAS is a bit more on the high fashion side, where it seems Fabio is more RTW, streetwear. It will be interesting to see how the judges take to his work, if it will need to be amped up some or accepted as is.

Project Runway – The Best of the Rest

Project Runway season 13 has come to an end, with Sean Kelly being the winner. NYFW is where the finalists show their final collections, MBFW at Lincoln Center to be precise. Fashion Week happens a little before the finale airs. In order to maintain secrecy, other designers will too present collections so that the finalists will remain unknown. As I’m sure many of you have already done, I am now perusing the other designers’ presentations and of course ready to discuss! So here is what I call “The Best of the Rest”!

Korina for sure had my fave collection amongst the fellow eliminated designers. I’m still holding onto such a grudge that she was eliminated early and unfairly. I think she could have done great work in the last challenge, thus securing a spot for herself in the finale. I really dig the vibe and attitude her looks are giving off. The pieces exude such confidence and have the capability of being worn by either chic fashionistas or bad-ass women who dare to be feminine and sexy.

k5

Based on the finalists we saw, I think the judges would have given great feedback to Korina. She clearly demonstrated she was far more than just an “ethnic” designer as Nina so annoyingly dubbed her. I think she showed a greater range than one other finalist for sure. And I also think she wouldn’t have needed quite as much direction as at least 2 of the finalists. She had a clear concept here and stuck to it. She’s demonstrated such growth this season within her own aesthetic.

1k

Korina is another contestant this season who did have a clear vision, a focused aesthetic. And because of this, and what was created at hand, I think she could have done well in the finale. I saw growth from her, right at the same level or pace as that of Amanda or Sean. Too bad the judges were sippin’ on some crazy kool-aid and made the poor choice in sending Korina home before she had the chance to present as a finalist! And as crazy as the judges & I were about Amanda’s jewelry, I am the same level of love-fest craziness for Korina’s booties, which I’m pretty sure she had a hand in creating! I know they are not from Aldo and they fit  too perfectly with her looks to not be a part of her design-work.

3k

This look above is one of my faves. Honestly there are too many faves to pick just one! But this one represents so well what Korina’s collection is about. She works well with leather. Her jackets or outwear are TTDF! She works well with texture, mixing of various fabrics. She can do more than just dresses, her separate pieces are divine, such a great fit. She also had a great use of color, bold red, sunshine yellow, soft teal, and royal blue. All of the colors worked well together and were paired nicely with basics in black and white.

4k

Other great facets to her collection, the color-blocking, excellent fits, and good proportions. Other finale collection pieces certainly had some execution issues, but I didn’t see that with Korina’s looks. Poor fit and execution should not be issues a PR finalist has. And really, by that point, a designer’s clear voice should be heard. And we have all of this with Korina!

k7

There is always a question about what cohesion means. Generally it’s a multitude of things, but cohesion shouldn’t mean 1 fabric throughout a collection or the same colors. There should be more. And with Korina, we have connective colors, similar vibes, ultimately having the same girl wanting all of the pieces. I see that here. There can also be a story. Unsure of Korinas’ since we didn’t hear her thoughts, but there are still other cohesive points to discuss. There is color-blocking, patterns, styling, and more. This was more than I saw from another finalist!

1k0

To Korina, great job. I want your pieces and will keep an eye out. I would proudly don any of these looks. I know we will see more from you in the future and I can’t wait!

9k

fäde’s collection was too quite impressive overall. I don’t think his intricate work with prints was truly able to flourish during his time on the show. He is really about pushing the creative bounds, being innovative with his print work. And more often than not, a day or less is just not a sufficient amount of time to really develop this type of work.

2f

Now this is the way to incorporate words or phrases into looks! For the runway, you can’t just stick a word on a boring top and expect that to cut it. Is it wrong to make a sweatshirt or basic tee with words and put it down the runway? Absolutely not! Wildfox, Desigual, and other brands do it all the time. But the point is to still be exciting; you still must amp it up somehow. And fäde did just that!

1f

He of course is a master with prints, but really showed he could work well with his great use of color. It was the perfect idea of a graphic print work to incorporate a teal or burnt orange, and just play around with those colors – various shades, mixing textures, etc.

f8

He also showed a great deal of versatility. He not only made some stunning dresses, but really worked well with separates too – jackets, shorts, pants, and more!

1f0

When you can tell a model is having genuine fun rockin’ a look, I think that speaks volumes! So either these girls can add “great actress” to their resume, or they were authentically having a fun time!

9f

These are just a few of my fave looks, but really I had so many to choose from so you will have to forgive my lack of ability to pick only 2 or 3!

4f

fäde also gets shout-outs for Philip B. hair, a little chic yet messy distressed hair-do; it really worked with the streetwear vibe, but also Mary Kay for beauty – very clean, natural make-up look, spot on with the bronzed cheek!

6f

Alexander had some great looks, but my main issue was cohesion. I remember when Tim told Sean during the finale, part 1, that his collection seemed like it was divided; there were 2 different presentations. I think I saw this with Alexander’s 10 looks. I saw pieces that were more sportswear-oriented and then ones of a more refined, elegant level. I’m just not sure I got the connective thread, except that both were still executed in a simplistically minimal manner.

a5

a10

This is not to say I didn’t like the various pieces, but I’m still not sure Alexander has developed a clear vision for where he wants to go as a designer. I’m not sure if he would be ready to make a brand for himself. But I have no doubts he can get there and I would look forward to seeing his development and growth as a designer!

a4

I think this was a decent start for Alexander though. Over time, I’m sure he can work with a great foundation in the basics he already has at his disposal, and just work with developing some “Alexander” signatures to add to his pieces.

a2

It was great seeing the versatility though, lots of separates and beautiful dresses. I’m interested to see where Alexander can go from here for sure!

a9

6

Next up, Emily, who too was cut right before the finale, barely missing her chance at being a finalist. I think she is another designer this season who had a clear voice, a clear vision. I think with her final collection we saw her aesthetic, but with a bit more sophistication; it had a more luxe feel or quality to the various pieces.

7

Emily made use of some great work with sheer pieces. This stunning turtleneck sheer top above was immaculate! I don’t think the judges showed much love for Emily over the season. But I wonder how they would have reacted to her work, but turned up a notch as she did with this presentation.

4

The vibe was somewhat luxurious, but still youthful and chic street. There was a wide range for her type of girl to choose from — shorts, great tops, day dresses, or even some more elegant night-time looks.

9

A lot of her fabric choices caught my eye, especially the sheer printed tops. I would love to know if she screen-printed her own design on them, but definitely would be intrigued to learn more!

5

There was a little flare with her show, some volume, some structure in the pieces. So that was great to see RTW, but also with a little dramatic umpf.

3

Upon my first few glances for Sandhya’s looks, I was quite confused. This was a different side of her work as a designer with more understated looks. Sort of as with Alexander’s more basic vibe, I’m not sure I was over the moon about Sandhya’s more simplistic looks. I think they were executed just fine, but I wasn’t sure how much I was seeing Sandhya in them or that they stood out, being memorable. This was just such a new facet of her work so it was a bit perplexing, nonetheless intriguing.

1s

But later with her collection, the more DIY side of Sandhya came back. I understand the desire to go avant garde, to create a bit more show-y pieces. As we saw from our 4 finalists, this was not their direction and it made sense based on their aesthetic. But for Sandhya, going with this more dramatic flare route made sense. I still feel her looks read very DIY though and not high fashion.

10s

There were a few looks though where I might have thought differently or could have changed my mind if I had seen them in person. And these are looks I wouldn’t mind getting a more up close and personal visit with to better gauge my reaction! Let me be Zac Posen, who always made sure to get really up close and personal when doing his final judge’s critique! Actually, I really commend him for caring. He judged from his seat, but when it came time to really study the looks up close, he was right there, looking so closely. Other judges tended to hang back some, their prerogative, but I was glad to see Zac with genuine care or concern!

All in all, I’m still not the biggest Sandhya fan, but I did see some improvements with her work since she had more time. I think she still needs a bit more time to work out some kinks though!

Until next time ………….. but stay tuned as I will also be blogging about PRAS!!

More FWB Recaps – A Good Cause Amidst a Fashionable Affair

larger

Huge thanks to Shanise Gibson for collaborating with Fashion Nexus on this post, and sharing her amazingly stunning images from FWB! Shanise Gibson is an aspiring freelance photographer born in Brooklyn, New York. Known for her constant love of being a “Free Spirit” & never passing by the word “Free” itself, she has taken in all knowledge given to her to soon make a name for herself in the world of photography.

FWB is of course a wonderful platform for emerging and independent designers to showcase their work. But it’s great that there was a way to combine fashion with a good cause amongst all of the ongoing runway presentations. More on that in a bit! But first up, let’s take a look at the exotic and vibrant S/S 2015 collection presented by John Guarnes.

DSC_7080

Stunning looks for both men and women. Bold colors. Immaculate fits. Inspired looks. This and more is what John Guarnes put down the runway for FWB. Guarnes is known for elegance, simplicity and distinctive details. And this is exactly what came down the runway for FWB, showing evolution and development in his signatures.

DSC_7132

Guarnes’ base was lace detailing, some scalloped hems and his work only grew from there. I enjoyed seeing his vision come across a vast array of styles & silhouettes – elegant eveningwear to bodycon dresses.

DSC_7105

Guarnes’ vision for his label is to create clothes that are luxuriously wearable but with feminine simplicity. His touch is especially sophisticated and modern, striving to make fashion that is timeless in its elegance. The luxe fit and comfy, elegant looking fabric choices worked for both the gents and the ladies.

DSC_7122

But what certainly stood out for me is that the black lace detailing really worked well with the dramatic pops of color Guarnes utilized – electric lime green, bright tangerine, and sizzlin’ hot pink.

DSC_7064

Keeping in line with sexy, modern looks for the femme fatale, let’s check out Claire Henkel of Urban Sewn. Various heels & shoes for the looks were courtesy of Navalo Shoes.

Stretch mesh V-turtle neck top with stretch ponte skirt. Wrinkle-free, hassle-free.

DSC_7158

Urban Sewn was founded in 2013 by Claire Henkel, based on the principles of timeless design, versatility, and luxury. Inspired by the lifestyle of the city girl who is always on the go, ready for whatever the day and night brings. AM to PM, city to city, all she has time for is an outfit that works. And because it works and makes her life easier, it is luxurious.

Silk georgette top with cut out details on sleeves. Stretch metallic skirt with fold detail

Urban Sewn Spring Summer 2015-023

The looks are perfect for being on the go, very representative of the brand’s core vision. Urban Sewn embraces influences from different times and different places. They are inspired by old and new, unique and common, vintage to modern; ingredients of timeless design are the foundation of all of the pieces.

Urban Sewn Spring Summer 2015-017

Classic silhouettes and styles create for pieces any woman would love to have as a part of her wardrobe because it’s a fave, but also because it will stand the test of the fashion times! These pieces definitely do that — fitted pencil skirts, sheer effects, wrap dresses, and more.

Blue stretch ponte top with handcut lace detail. Matching skirt with zipper and asymmetric hem.

DSC_7176

All pieces start with hand drawn patterns then to a handmade garment.  Each fabric is carefully hand selected for effortless style, comfort, and versatility. The brand’s mantra, wear confidence and effortless luxury with Urban Sewn. This makes perfect sense!

White raised pinstripe jacquard with sheer asymmetric peplum detail.

DSC_7244

It’s easy to be confident in such sexy, luxurious, high quality looks. And it’s not an overtly or obvious form of sexiness, just very sensual, alluring looks with a feminine vibe.

Heavy Italian jersey with fringe detail at sleeves. Black & white stretch jacquard skirt.

DSC_7202

The details in the collection are truly stunning, very eye-catching. There is leather detailing, a shoelace effect, fringe, draping, & more. These are very much pieces that are on trend, but done in a unique fashion, fitting for the Urban Sewn vision.

Ponte aroma with white lace detail. Asymmetric bottom hem.

Urban Sewn Spring Summer 2015-015

There is a little pop of color and even a print, but most of the looks are in the staple, traditional black. A sea of black could be a bore, but not when done so phenomenally and with an intricate, very crafted hand.

Sexy, confident looks continue with Angel Rodriguez OMI’s presentation!

DSC_7267

Designer OMI of SaiOne creates one of a kind apparel for both men & women who are unique &
appreciate clothes that showcase their individuality.

The show was well thought, attention paid to details from head to toe — the eyewear, the belts, jewelry, face masks, & more!

DSC_7372

The aesthetic for this collection will tell a story of regal luxury & underground fetish. What helps to carry on this tale is the great use of color and bold prints.

DSC_7318

The dramatic flare aides to how sexy and feminine these pieces are, looks certainly fitting for the daring, confident woman.

DSC_7345

There is also a great interplay with softer silhouettes to that of stronger, tougher pieces, such as the hooded leather separates piece above.

DSC_7301

Clearly an underlying concept for this final day of FWB was that of sexy, confident looks. Here is Bradley Douglas Jordan’s take on this concept with his 3rd showing at FWB!

DSC_7002

Very daring, such dramatic flare are seen with these varied pieces, taking for example the stark white structured separates look above, and the fur bikini, complete with a floor-length vest.

DSC_6928

And who says men are not able to take on looks that scream bold & confident. It was great to see Jordan’s translation to that of menswear. He also made use of a sky blue/grey print that was seen amongst looks for both women and men.

DSC_6918

The looks were very understated in that of style, some simplistic minimalism, which is always nice to see. Not every designer has to use bells & whistles to get a concept or message across!

DSC_6956

Denim was quite refreshing to see. It was perfectly in line with many other great touches seen throughout the collection, some swimwear, hooded garments, floor length vests, and more!

DSC_6972

And now onto the charitable cause, certainly worthy of giving additional recognition — Goodbye Malaria. BK Style & FWB chose to support this deserving cause amidst the runway presentations. Goodbye Malaria is an initiative by African entrepreneurs with global partners who believe it’s time for Malaria elimination. In support of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM), Goodbye Malaria is a campaign that benefits The Global Fund by raising funds for Malaria elimination in Africa.

DSC_7036

Various PJs, sleepwear are now up for sell to support the cause. The aim is to eliminate malaria beginning in Mozambique.

And the PR Season 13 Finalists Are…..

Well, no need for a drum roll on this decision since it was fairly obvious who the judges were sending to MBFW. In fact, the only real surprise was that the judges truly thought Char deserved yet another chance to prove herself, but I’ll discuss that topic in just a bit. Let’s first see what the challenges were this week that set the stage for which designers would make it to fashion week.

pr13-ep12-episode27

The designers had to face 2 challenges in order to make it to the finale. Tim, alongside Brian Bolain, Corporate Marketing Manager for Lexus, delivered the first set of challenge details. The designers got to ride around in a brand new Lexus, driver in tow, to hit the streets of NYC in order to find their inspiration. They were to create a street chic look that could be worn everyday of the week. The look had to be fashionable and progressive. The designers were taking in all of the city sights, the people, the architecture, graffiti, and more! Tim said this would be a 2-day challenge and he would meet them later at Mood to shop with their $200 budget. I think it was fairly obvious at that point there was more to the story here. Come on, 2 days for a street inspired look, no one was being fooled here!

pr13-ep12-episode3

So sure enough, as the designers made their way back to the workroom for day 2, they were greeted with more challenge details. They walked into the workroom to see 5 eliminated looks. Tim soon came in with the infamous button bag and more details. Each designer was to choose a losing look and reposition it to make it a winning look. Tim was clear — these 2 challenges were separate so there was no need for cohesion between the looks. They were also given an additional $100 Mood budget to purchase supplementary fabrics. Emily’s button was drawn first and she chose Samantha’s navy blue evening gown (from the Chopard challenge). Next up was Char, who chose Korina’s most recently eliminated look from the storage bidding wars challenge. Amanda then chose fäde‘s rain-way look. Kini selected Mitchell’s red carpet challenge dress, leaving Sean with no choice but Sandhya’s onesie from the American Girl doll challenge.

pr13-ep12-episode2

With only 1 day left and still 2 looks to complete, Tim also said the designers would have helpers to finish up their work. He said the helpers were there to only assist, not collaborate! And the assistants were none other than the creators of the losing looks just chosen. This is of course brings us to the drama of the episode where a very frustrated and upset Korina was not ready to be back in the workroom, let alone assist Char in her attempt to still make it to fashion week. I do wonder if another designer had chosen Korina’s look if she could have managed to stay. But she still very much had sour grapes and yes, a major attitude. However, regardless of her outward emotions, her elimination was a much harsher one than other designers and quite unprecedented with PR history.

project-runway-korina-char

She was eliminated on a group challenge where no bottom group was chosen. She was then pitted against the very designer she was being asked to assist this week. A designer who has been given way more chances to prove herself to the judges this season, yet she still somehow manages to be the recipient of even more PR lives; she’s like a PR catwoman! But really Char should be thankful Korina bowed out. Did she really want someone’s help who didn’t want to be there? So Char worked with Alexander, whose look BTW was not amongst the losing looks graveyard — I wonder why!?! If you went in order of elimination, his look should have been there.

pr13-ep12-episode15

It was soon time for model fittings and Tim-time. Tim reminded the designers the looks needed to stand out. Sean was having some major struggles trying to find a way to re-work Sandhya’s look. Understandable — way too much bubblegum pink! Emily was also struggling a bit on the re-worked look. She said her mind and heart wasn’t in it. She was way to wrapped up in her street inspired look with a hoodie she had been dying to make all season.

pr13-ep12-episode19

The guest judge this week was Shay Mitchell, the super-talented star of ABC Family’s hit drama Pretty Little Liars. Shay was a great choice for this week’s guest judge spot, with helping to decide which designers would go to fashion week. She always looks great on the red carpet and certainly made the rounds herself at NYFW — she was all over the place!

pr13-ep12-episode43

The judges didn’t name a winning designer this week. I’m not sure if the order they announced who was going to fashion week was indicative of anything. But for almost every designer who made it, the judges seemed to love one look, while not really being a fan of the other. Even though I feel it’s been almost meant to be for a Kini/Sean/Amanda finale, I do think each designer is very worthy of their final 3 spot. And no I didn’t forget to mention Char, I just don’t agree she was deserving of yet another chance to present as a finalist. She is for sure going to need a lot of more of her magical mist to beat any of the other 3 designers. And if she does, it would only be out of luck that Sean, Kini, or Amanda slip up and lose it for themselves. Even if you could pick a best look between her 2 dresses this week, it would in no way even compare to Sean, Amanda, or Kini’s best looks this week. But what would PR be this season without 1 hopefully last illogical decision. We better not see any of that on the finale! Ooooo, and also, what would this last runway have been without another popular trend on the season, more fringe! And with that, let’s discuss Sean’s looks first.

pr13-ep12-episode31

So Sean definitely hit a homerun this week with his street-inspired look, but I would label his re-worked garment as a total miss, 3 strikes and he’s out! Well not really out because his street chic look was totally amazing! It would be hard to imagine such a stark white look lasting an entire day on the streets of NYC, but you would certainly turn heads in this look. You could dress it up, dress it down, wear it to brunch, or a rockin’ rooftop soirée. The fit was great. And I loved the cutouts and ladylike collar.

-proje8ct-runway--sea

And I think it was Nina who commended Sean for his job well done with hair & make-up. I actually want to give Sean a shout-out for his Aldo nude sandal heels, perfection, and more specifically for the Mary Kay beauty look — love the bold plum lip!

project-runway-sea2

-project-runway-2-sea

However, I can’t believe no judge bothered to comment on the miss for the accessories and beauty look here. If Nina wants to call out Amanda, I’m not sure what was blinding her vision in reprimanding Sean a bit for his choices with this look. This separates look was not great, but really nothing was redeemable here, the boots, the hair, or the make-up. Sean has worked wonders with fringe before, but the magic just wasn’t present this time. Sandhya couldn’t make this ghastly baby pink work and neither could Sean. But lucky for him, each designer seemed to have one miss this week so the judges were in a bit more of a forgiving mood.

pr13-ep12-episode32

In choosing a best street chic look, it would be a tie between Amanda and Sean. But if I had to choose a best overall designer for the week, judging both of the looks combined, I would pick Amanda. So first, let me do a love-fest over this color-blocked maxi. I mean it is totally to die for. It was very much Amanda. The colors she chose were brilliant. With other maxidresses there is a great deal to choose from with bright summery colors & prints. Amanda was smart to put a different spin on the color choices. I also think she did a great job with the placement of the colors, the cutout, and the draping of the back. I agree with the judges in that the look was sexy, but in a subtle way. I don’t think the accessory and beauty choices were worthy of a Nina reprimand, but as I said earlier, if she is going to be so snippy about one designer, she needs to do the same for all!

-project-runwa7y--sea

But I do love this maxi, beauty & accessories aside. I could see it clearly on the streets of NYC and not only would it turn heads, I think it would stop traffic! Amanda, you can make one for me and send it my way ASAP! I will find a NYC event to rock this look at for sure!

project-runwa1y-sea

-project-runw3ay--sea

So I believe Heidi said this look was a little too much like what a club hostess would wear, but I guess still wearable at least. It was a bit too short, but I’m happy she decided to somehow still maintain fäde‘s work with his electric lines. It was a bit underwhelming compared to the 1st dress, but most of the re-worked looks fell by the wayside this week. I think it was because the designers had so much time to find inspiration with their street chic looks. They were all feeling so inspired for that 1st day of work. It was understandable they couldn’t all of a sudden find just as much passion, on top of less time to create, for an entire 2nd look. But just as with Sean, Amanda did so well with her other look, and in the judges’ eyes, all was forgiven!

pr13-ep12-episode28

Kini too was comparable in his work for the week, 1 standout and another that was so-so. However his standout look was from the re-worked challenge. He clearly did the best job in repositioning a losing look into a winning look!

project-runway-s1ea1

-project-runw8ay--sea

Kini reworking Mitchell’s “very red” red carpet look into this boldly glam asymmetrical gown was sheer genius. And yes, that is pun intended since Kini made such a great choice in adding the detail of a sheer asymmetrical sleeve. The point of the original challenge was to create a red carpet look for Heidi and she would have totally been a best dressed in this number. Just as with all of Kini’s work, it was so well-made, very high quality. It was luxuriously superb and I’m always amazed by what Kini can do in such a short amount of time.

Also, Aldo accessories shout-out for this gorgeous nude clutch — love!!

-project-runw7ay--sea

Kini didn’t receive such high praise for his street chic look though. The problem with this look was editing. The pieces didn’t work together as a whole, but were certainly wearable as individual pieces. The judges, especially Heidi, went bananas over this navy trenchcoat. But paired with this structured denim skirt, it was all a bit too much. Shout-out though on all other counts, Aldo accessories, perfectly coordinating black heels & gold bracelets, Philip B. hair, gorgeous wavy hair, & Mary Kay beauty, with a natural, fresh make-up look.

pr13-ep12-episode30

Just as Amanda/Kini/Sean making the finale came as no surprise, neither did Emily’s elimination. You could see it coming all episode long, whether it was from her extreme love & desire to create this hoodie, or her admitted disregard for her re-worked look. The judges were not a fan of either look. Mary Kay beauty shout-out though — simple, natural makeup look

-project-run5way--sea

The judges also couldn’t come to any agreement over a look that Emily was truly passionate about. While Heidi seemed fine with the hoodie, Zac was clearly not a fan at all, thinking it was homeless-like. I think Emily found a great print here for the undergarments, but they were too PJ-like when used for both the top & bottom. I think maybe pairing this top with some jeans or leather leggings, it could have worked or been more acceptable for the judges. As far as the grey hoodie though, I mean this is what you would see for sure on the streets of NYC. I’m not sure if it would standout amongst the other pieces of outerwear gracing the streets of NY, but at least Emily stuck to who she was as a designer. And at least at this point, we knew who she was as a designer.

-project-runway--se4a

project-runway-3sea

On the other hand, you could not see Emily at all in this re-worked look. And the problem was, Emily’s heart just wasn’t in it and she even said so herself. Adding an asymmetrical sleeve and a printed shortened skirt was not enough here. It all just read as too commercial, which is definitely not how I would label Emily’s work. Her designs are always a bit more unique, more one-of-a-kind. Aldo shout-out though, great choice of nude sandal heels. But with no judges in her corner this left Emily going home. Although if someone can explain to me how Emily wasn’t just as deserving of one 2nd chance, since Char was given like 4, please, go ahead, I’m listening!

According to my chart for how the season has gone, both of these ladies have had 2 high points, but 0 wins. They have had equal the same amount of bottom looks though. The only differences actually work against Char in that she was eliminated and had to save herself with a 1-hour “Save Me” challenge. I’m not seeing what Char has done that was so redeemable. At best, let them each have made their collection and had a face-off to see who would get the final 4th spot if the judges so desperately needed or wanted 4 finalists. I would be just as intrigued to see what Emily would come up with, as the judges are to see what Char will do with even more time!

pr13-ep12-episode36

So I admit, Sandhya got a very harsh critique from me over this season, but it was in part due to the unexplained, illogical judges’ love-fest over her work. Unfortunately, Char will now get some of that same harshness because the judges have been making “0” sense since last week! My comments in no way mean that Char wasn’t deserving of her time on the show or even the Tim Gunn save. I’ve loved many of her looks this season, but her work last week should have sent her home over Korina, and her looks this week, were not deserving of yet another chance in giving her a spot at NYFW. My whole point is to demonstrate the lack of logic with the judges’ decisions. In fact, I think she only got another chance from the judges so they could feel justified in sending Korina home over Char the week before.

-project-ru6nway--sea

Let’s start with the street chic look, which to me read total hoochie. She described this look as Soho?? Hardly! In fact, I’m not sure I would reference NYC in this look at all. The judges thought there was vision here, but yet again, as with many of Char’s looks, poor execution. They were 100% right in that there was too many petals on the skirt. They thought it needed editing, but I’m not quite sure what could have been done to save this look. All of the other designers found such clear vision and inspiration for their street chic looks. And even with Emily being eliminated, she clearly had a passion for what she was creating. I didn’t see that with Char. They all had a day and so I don’t understand why the judges gave such leniency to Char.

-project-runway--sea

project-runwa4y-sea

What’s even sadder is the complete disconnect between how Char attempted to re-work Korina’s look. I still don’t think Korina’s look was elimination-worthy. But for Char having not only so much fabric, but so many fabric options, and to then come up with a sad, simple black dress, really! Unlike her street chic look, I’m not sure what great idea would have developed with more time. But just like her under-developed street-inspired look, she yet again had execution issues.

And so just to reiterate, I don’t see how an entire competition has not been enough time for her. She’s had the same time constraints like every other designer and why she is deserving of any leniency is beyond me. The other eliminated designers I’m sure had great ideas that could have used more time to flourish. I’m sure somehow she won’t come in 4th place, but I wonder if another designer will lose it for themselves, or if the judges will attempt to justify their decision in sending her to fashion week. Can’t wait to see!

FWB, Night 1, Kicks off with a Bang!

ss15-preticket-banner

Huge thanks to Shanise Gibson for collaborating with Fashion Nexus on this post, and sharing her amazingly stunning images from FWB! Shanise Gibson is a aspiring freelance photographer born in Brooklyn, New York. Known her constant love of being a “Free Spirit” & never passing by the word “Free” it self, she has taken in all knowledge given to her to soon make a name for herself in the world of photography.

Night 1 for Fashion Week Brooklyn, simply put, there was no better way to kick off this multi-day event of runway shows! There was so much going on, so much to take in. You could not have walked away disappointed. This 1st night was all about eco-fashion. The various looks were eco-friendly, highly innovative. There was a little something for everyone, the ladies, the gents, and even the kids! In fact, several designers were actually kids or teenagers. I will cover those young talents in a separate post, but for now let’s focus on some stunning pieces that graced the runway at Industry City, home of FWB! First up, a designer who is all about the volume, high fashion couture, Tom of Sohung Designs!

DSC_6484

These pieces are highly original & one of a kind. They are hand-made right in NY! While creating some very fashionable pieces for women, he also puts out menswear looks too.

DSC_6383

The pieces are certainly eye-catching. The play on volume & draping is effortlessly and elegantly done.

DSC_6450

I love the balance and interplay between hard and soft elements. The end result is a strong, statement-making look.

DSC_6360

This is a great showing for Sohung Designs. What’s been created here is stunningly unique. It’s quite fitting to grace the red carpet or formal affair.

DSC_6469

Switching from high fashion looks of bold red carpet style, let’s check out some other great looks, but of a more understated nature – Lisbeth Lovbak Berg of Norway. The brand’s aesthetic is based on the idea of conceptual ecology and has a clear vision of slow fashion, with focus on high quality tailoring and an ecological and ethical message.

DSC_6306

“One topic that reappears in my work is the question of how we see clothing.  I find the link between the habitat and clothing, (habit, in French) particularly intriguing. Clothing is in in the most basic sense something to cover and protect us from the outside environment; this is the same basic quality as that of a house. Yet the durability that one associates with a house strongly contrasts the ephemeral aspects of clothing and fashion. ”

Berg makes use of a great print here – basic neutral solid backdrops with cranes. It’s utilized well across several styles and silhouettes, and is hand silk screen printed on organic cotton and bamboo.

DSC_6319

“The CONSTRUCTION spring/summer collection is inspired by appearance as a construction, how we construct our image through clothing and how this image is only one piece in the puzzle that is who you are.”

Some of the pieces combine this subtle print with a tougher piece of outerwear, a denim embellished vest, use of recycled denim.

DSC_6347

Berg’s use of color is also great here. There is a lot of white and neutrals in that of pale blue, but there is a great pop of color with that of soft peach. This is a great showing lovely, yet simplistically minimal.

DSC_6276

Softer, more delicate presentations are great to watch and certainly can leave a lasting imprint. But sometimes the effect is a bit more in your face. With Repurposed/Reused, the looks are bold and dramatic. They knew how to put on a SHOW, drama & all!

DSC_6241

There were looks for both women and men, basics in solids to louder pieces with dynamic prints.

DSC_6131

This was a strong showing, very tough, hard looks that promoted strength and confidence from within the wearer.

DSC_6201

The looks were all so well thought out, from head to toe. The styling was spot on and Repurposed didn’t disappoint.

DSC_6161

There was so much versatility and lots to chose from, dresses to separates.

DSC_6223

These varying streetwear looks for this S/S 2015 collection also have an underlying military inspiration, tribute to veterans.

1907842_723261894421629_4002963403273158715_n

Repurposed/Reused was clearly inspired and there were many other inspiration-filled collections for Night 1 of FWB, such as Iliana Quander, and her culturally inspired and diverse collection for S/S 2015.

Iliana’s looks are bold, statement-making, very unique, one-of-a-kind.

DSC_6042

There are also very dynamic and eye-catching looks for the gents as well!

DSC_5997

And topping off the “something for everyone” collection, Iliana also offers something for the youngins’! Must give props to this little tyke, she knew how to work the runway! And if I’m not mistaken, I think it was Iliana’s daughter??

DSC_6022

This collection was so dynamic, very versatile. There was a great interplay with softer looks, such as with delicate flowers.

DSC_6013

The softer side was juxtaposed nicely with stronger, more confident looks with that of structure and leather pieces. This was a stunning presentation, job well done!

DSC_5977

Last up for this first post on FWB is Bridgett Artise for Born Again Vintage, with some truly modern twists on classic styles!

DSC_5880

These pieces will for sure leave your mind to wonder! They are so amazing, stunningly eye-catching, with lots of intricacies to keep your attention!

Bridgett is all about being vintage, creating sustainable fashion. She pulls clothing from second-hand stores in order to deliver unique pieces, thus finding her passion with vintage!

As Bridgett perfectly describes, this is upcycling, not recycling! There is such a contemporary, hip, chic vibe to the various looks.

The looks are so cool, so different, any fashionista would be set in wearing any of these looks!

Kia Vonvega, of Clear Boutique, debuted her Spring/Summer 2015 fashion week collection a few days ago at the hip lounge/bar LQ NYC. Needless to say, she debuted with a bang as pieces were brimming with energy, color, and allure.

LQ in NYC — 511 Lexington Ave.

There were 25 models that strutted down the runway, exuding such confidence and attitude. But how could one not in such bold, provocative looks! The collection included sexy silhouettes in various forms – swimwear, jumpsuits, bodycon dresses, streetwear, semi-formal looks, & more!

Now for a little lovefest on a personal fave of mine in this collection, pictured above & below, the fitted metallic lavender polka dot dress. Polka dots are a styled print I often wear and as such, this is a trend I always keep an eye out for on the runway. I am the NYC Fashion Editor for Bellus Magazine, and in my recent Fall 2014 Fashion Week recap, I summarized some hot looks and trends I saw during Fashion Week. One such feature was all on polka dots. So Kia, with this mesmerizing & stunning look, I add your design talents right alongside greats such as Lela Rose & Zimmermann – JOB WELL DONE! Clearly I am in love with this look and it will not be forgotten anytime soon!

10670282_10152443570914001_2692608265687460068_n

Kia describes her collection and its inspirations as being about sexy and sensual moods. There was a clear focus & plan to showcase a sexier side of feminine appeal. The way to do that, utilize bold colors and showcase alluring silhouettes.

Lace appliqué & cutouts are 2 other trends I featured in my Bellus Fashion Week recap piece. And as I mentioned there, these are trends I don’t see going away anytime soon so I like to see what modern touches designers add to make the trend technique their own. As seen below, in this hot pink fitted number and nude striped jumpsuit, Kia is adding her signature stamp to these details.

15182231538_66f7c7df73_z

Speaking of design details, the intricate details for Kia’s collection are what truly captivated every soul at LQ last Friday, Sept. 26th. Everything was so meticulously thought out and crafted. Fringe is in right now, so with this hot orange separates piece, it is right on trend for S/S 2015!

15182305517_17365ab84d_z

The colors in this collection POP! There are bold solid hues in lime green, tangerine orange, hot pink, royal blue, and more. With prints there is aquatic reptilian and zebra striped numbers. Getting back to some great details, there is always plenty of room for creativity, such as with this burgundy one-piece with multi-colored fuzzy balls.

15182235508_dfb4df1d97_z

These looks are all just super cool, some of a more relaxed style, while others are hip, bad-ass numbers that will grab everyone’s attention for sure! There is a totally chic vibe about the pieces that scream chic fashionista urban RTW. These looks would be eye-catching on the street or mesmerizing at an exclusive rooftop lounge or cocktail bar.

Let’s do another love-fest on this lace turquoise number. It grabs the attention from all angles. There is asymmetry, half pants, half dress. There are intricate & exquisite cutouts at the shoulder and on the back. The look is just hands down stunning. The instant it hit the runway I was intrigued. It would also work in any color, but I think the use of a bold pop of color in turquoise was wise for the runway. Another great look Kia — PROPS!!

10417435_10154627146580641_3850842183765176927_n

A great designer knows a runway show is not just about a look coming down the runway, it’s about putting on a great show, styling looks from head to toe. Now I will get to the make-up & hair details later, but what clearly stood out for me with Kia’s presentation was many of her accessories, especially the footwear. Check out these rockin’ lace & floral combo open-toed booties — #LOVE!

15368821155_43524c637e_z

And stealing the show with footwear are these thigh-high gold netted heels – smokin’, hot, killer heels, & whatever other sexy adjective one might think of that could and does describe these heels!

15182307437_c71d0527e4_z

Another sexy amazing look with more hip, chic strapped heels.

Last Fashion Week Journey Recap! :(

This is my last recap for NYFW/MBFW 2014 season, for S/S 2015 collections — so sad! It’s been great recapping about some very stunning and amazing looks for both women and men next year. So without further adieu, let’s start this final recap with bold menswear designer brand Luar Zepol!

 Luar+Zepol+Runway+Mercedes+Benz+Fashion+Week+GInLU26C6Kil

With antique chandeliers lining the ceiling and a backdrop of ringing school bells and dark primitive music, Luar Zepol’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection debuted at Webster Hall. Designer Raul Lopez kept to his signature aesthetic of raw avant-garde menswear, but also experimented with new methods that combined edgy metal pieces with patchwork and colorblocking designs.

Luar+Zepol+Runway+Mercedes+Benz+Fashion+Week+GXkVKxFZ9dQl

Lopez’s mixture of materials, such as plastic and tarpaulin, with the mechanical walks of the models gave a feel of wild utilitarianism. In previous seasons, Lopez has explored themes ranging from tundra to space. However, for his Spring/Summer 2015 collection, he went with a forest atmosphere, chirping birds with hues of grey, brown & dark blue to tell his story.

Luar+Zepol+Runway+Mercedes+Benz+Fashion+Week+oGICcAeSwLxl

Similar to previous collections, Lopez did not fail to engage viewers with his creative structure and unique uses of a multitude of fabrics. Luar Zepol’s style is unapologetically original, and his constant manipulation of what we consider wearable, shows promise that Lopez will continue to create groundbreaking collections.

Next up, Hanley Mellon.

ba3670e3d048ddefacf5226cdf672478

Husband-and-wife team Matthew Mellon and Nicole Hanley Mellon looked to Kenya for their first presentation, encompassing earthy tones & bold patterns. This was definitely an abstract take on cultural inspirations and with a very diverse lineup indeed!

Hanley-Mellon-GALL13

This collection has a lot to offer from chic separates to trendy dresses, but all still very on point with the cultural inspiration. The rich tones of browns and burgundies are spot on, and are quite unique for a S/S collection.

Special guests in attendance — Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia, socialite Tinsley Mortimer, TV personality Kelly Bensimon; Executive Director of the CFDA Fern Mallis; Indian American designer Waris Ahluwalia, & stylist James Aguiar.

The pieces will captivate you from start to finish, something new & unique around every corner. Enjoy!

Finally, let’s check out dynamic menswear & womenswear designer, Ricardo Seco.

1410467479290_ricardo-seco-spring-summer-2015-600

Seco’s S/S 2015 line is sporty New York City meats urban Mexico. Entitled, “Dreams,” the collection stays true to his Mexican origins, with influences of the warm-toned Wixárika tribe, and is still grounded by New York City’s effortless and simple styling. Typically Ricardo is all about menswear, but dabbling with a few women’s looks last season, he now evenly divided his presentation between both sexes. Seco described these girls as the “women versions of his menswear.”

898dcba19b167d8cb5263eca61a43816

“These women are not worried. They are strong. They just want to feel good,” Seco said. Without a doubt Seco’s women carried plenty of boyish elements throughout the collection. The looks are stylish, yet relaxed in fit. There are high stylin’ and profilin’ elements mixed with basic tees and bomber jackets.

00c7f3353ad644072745a7aae8e835bf

Seco’s man was just as “boyish.” His men would find themselves in the in-between, the transition of a young boy to adult manhood. From the fabrics to the color palette, the collection as a whole was extremely coherent. “New York City is the city where you can see everything. If you can dress in New York, you can dress everywhere,” Seco said. “You can see a lot of the previous, urban ‘Ricardo Seco’ in this collection, but you can see a lot of my country here too. Touch of Mexico in New York style.”

Special guests in attendance were actor Eric West & former international pageant queen Stefania Fernandez.

Nolcha Recaps — Sophisticated, Sultry, & Sexy Looks for the Ladies!

Nolcha Fashion Week has a little something for everyone! When it comes to great looks for women, you can choose from chic, full-on fashionista pieces to sensual & alluring numbers to bold, confident frocks. Let’s begin with a few looks that are so polished, very sophisticated in nature with Charles & Ron.

PBN_0676

These pieces are quite exquisite. The collection encompasses a lot of styles & silhouettes. Taking for example this look above, very formal in nature with a full ball gown skirt — it’s divine! The prints for this collection are superbly eye-catching and stunning.

PBN_0355

This print seen above is featured on many looks in this collection. I love seeing it on a basic dress silhouette and then on a maxi as seen below. It all works! These pieces look to be so well made, high quality, creating a very polished overall look. Charles & Ron is sticking by their signature here, feminine silhouettes adorned with modern graphic prints.

PBN_0397

Keeping in line with a well put together ensemble, head to toe, there are some great accessories to catch one’s eye as well. There are many handbags, totes, and clutches paired with the looks — perfectly coordinated!

PBN_0572

Another highlighted feature is this white netting, as seen above over a fitted floor-length dress and then below over a LBD. It’s intricate, very detailed, and very in tune with this overall collection, the other looks, the underlying theme.

PBN_0480

Prints alone are great, but there is also a great use of color mixed in. Lots of black and white, but the varied pastels in rose pink, lavender, tangerine, and light teal are truly mesmerizing.

PBN_0514

This collection is phenomenal. It’s graphic and chic fashionista style. There is an infusion of many great elements here and they all combine so well, so fabulously! LOVE!

PBN_0432

Next up, let’s spice things up a bit, show off a little sexiness with Rinat Brodach.

PBN_5323

The collection is called “How to expose the Heart”.  It was inspired by the dilemma of exposing and protecting the heart. Rinat wears her heart on her sleeve. The inspiration was taken from everyday life where the heart is exposed, passionate, happy, sad, scared and vulnerable. This exposure leads to pieces that exhibit such confidence, also high quality design technique!

PBN_5378

The draping around the areas of the heart show us different situations and feelings from exposing the heart to protecting the heart. Sometimes art doesn’t make sense, ’cause it comes from the heart. But Rinat’s draping is very much her signature, and she does it so beautifully. Her pieces tell a story, and everything from the draping to the simplistically minimal style draws you in. You want to know more.

PBN_5213

The materials used for this collection also add into this story. Everything is of such high quality, captivating in nature. You wonder what is used right! It is different kinds of jerseys with some amazing textures on them, Cotton Satin, and Cupero. So not leather, but it’s great that the varied fabrics leave the eye & mind to wonder!

PBN_5444

I think it is great that Rinat echoed her signature, doing what she does so well with high-fashion construction and drape, and using this signature to further tell this collection’s story. The draping and construction conveys a mode of expression, inspiring women to lead from the heart and to bring out the inner sensuality, with the feeling of confidence and security.

PBN_5310

What makes this collection so intriguing to me is how understated the pieces are, yet still they are so captivating. It’s because of great technique in draping, high quality, great fit, and a clear story that grabs one’s attention.

PBN_5522

PBN_5433To complement these looks, Brodach collaborated with jewelry designer, Orly Ruaimi, to deconstruct Rinat’s concept of “How to Expose the Heart” (SS/2015) to its literal foundation, the arteries and veins of the human body. Copper pipes, with their stunning visual presence and metaphorical connection to the body’s blood flow, became the building blocks for the collection. Additional sterling silver finger shields were incorporated by jewelry designer, Schentell Dominique Nunn.

Moving on, let’s take a last look at a designer who infuses feminine sex appeal and culture into her pieces, Sofia Arana.

PBN_5920

Sofia Arana is another designer who is not afraid to showcase a little bit of sexiness with her pieces, but at the same time, they are super girly, fun, and flirty! You can see her Puerto Rican heritage & culture infused into each piece, from the prints to the colors to the silhouettes.

PBN_5729

This yellow & grey floral print is a featured print for this collection. I love the flirty feminine vibe it gives off and the cutout is just a great touch! This piece perfectly encapsulates Arana’s vision of a basic, classic shape, or silhouette, but adding her own signature, modern touches to keep up with today’s trends.

PBN_5637

Her lace detailed pieces are some of my personal faves, also keeping with today’s trends, especially with the use of sheer overlay. Sofia also loves to keep with a vintage appeal and I think she has really stuck by her true aesthetic with this collection, but just taking it to the next level.

PBN_5803

The pieces have just such a great flare, a lovely vibe. You would be able to wear these pieces at so many different places, dressed up, dressed down, on the streets, to a cocktail affair!

PBN_5687

Sofia’s signatures are being whimsical, yet a classy style for the young woman who appreciates casual elegance and a romantic vibe. All of these pieces take a new spin on this signature, a new twist that continues to stand with modern times and today’s trends.

PBN_5758

I love this print, have to feature it again! This look is probably one of my faves and would be great to dress up for a summer night out, or even pair with some flats for an on the go busy NYC day.

PBN_5779

PBN_5843

All in all, the pieces are for women who like to have a little fun when getting ready, are infused with a great confidence, and are not afraid to be a little flirty, a little sexy in the styling.

I also have to highlight ANTM cycle 10 model, Stacy Anne Fequiere, workin’ it for NYFW 2014, always great seeing her strut her stuff and do her thing!
