A Bowtie, Makes for Both a Charitable Runway Cause & Dramatic Runway Firsts

Thanks again fellow Project Runway fans for taking a moment to read my weekly recaps. Remember to keep up with many other Fashion Nexus updates by liking my page on Facebook or following on Twitter! I am hoping to work out being able to attend the Project Runway finale during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, so fingers crossed or if you have any friendly advice, please pass it along! Back now to this week’s recap:

This week, the designers were joined on the runway by guest judge, Jessie Tyler Ferguson. He not only was the guest judge, but also brought forth this week’s challenge. Ferguson has created an organization, Tie the Knot, which helps to raise funds in order to assist with the fight for marriage equality. Part of the organization is making fashionable bow-ties, which the designers had to use this week for both inspiration and incorporation with their finished garment. I’m sure many were thankful upon seeing the bow-tie that it was not a menswear challenge! The suggested budget was $200 and this was a 1 day challenge. It would have been great if this episode could have focused a bit more on this cause and the challenge, but sadly, 1 designer made himself the central focus. Most of what is likely to be remembered from this episode was the dramatic runway firsts created by Sandro. I will get back to that more in a bit, but first, the designers had received their challenge and were off to the workroom!

The designers were all a bit stressed it seemed this week. There was a lot of second-guessing and finishing of work right down to the wire. I’m sure many were trying to live up to a challenge and a cause they believed in. Others I think were just not sure what to do with all of this creative freedom. We saw during Tim Gunn‘s midway critiques this week that some designers, such as Helen or Sandro, were not doing too well post-critique or from critiques. We also saw behind Sue’s process in that she was unsure from the get go. She used doubled the budget and as we later saw that was all for nothing as she ended up in the bottom. So what was all to come from this craziness in the workroom? Who stood out on the runway with their bow-tied garments?

I was pretty much on the same page as the judges this week for the Top 3 and winner for this week. I wasn’t surprised that Dom was included since the judges really seem to be taking to her design aesthetic. I am not there yet, but her striped mini with structured bow-tie neckline was perfectly fine. It had a great fit and looked polished. I was not a fan of the neckline area myself as it just looked a bit messy. I actually had Alexandria in my top 3 as her look also looked great, fitted and didn’t use the bow-tie incorporation so literally. I could see someone actually wearing Alexandrias’ without curiosity as to why a bow-tie was there. The other two top 3 members were certainly deserving. Kate’s look was so unexpected from her and the pants she made looked so hot! Bradon also did a great job and I was happy to see he won again. He is such a standout this season and I hope he stays on top every week and is at the finale! His look with the bow-tied crop top was so intricate and perfectly matched with both a pair of shorts and a jacket. That is a lot of work he did this week and in such a short time-WOW! Moving on now to the bottom 3.

My addition to top 3: Alexandria                     alexndria

Judges’ Top 3: Dom, Kate, Bradon (bradon winning)                       dom

I had a completely different bottom 3 this week, which included Sandro. So he could have left for me in the traditional way of being in the bottom, but sadly and dramatically chose a different method. That is all explained at the end of my post, but back to the non-dramatic designers this week! Many looks were kind of boring, a bit sloppy, or just didn’t look great. I would advise for those I had in my bottom 3, Helen, Alexander and Sandro, and really a couple of others that they should be on the lookout for weeks to come! I guess it was pointless having Helen in the bottom since she was safe with her immunity from last week, but I’m glad the judges said something. She shouldn’t have felt safe this week. So I guess if I had to take her out, Sue would have been my next go to and she was in the judges’ bottom 3. Her look was clearly over-budgeted and for no good reason. The use of bow-ties was so abstract and kind of made for a hard to manage garment. I felt bad for Jeremy being in the bottom considering his bad news, but the whole ensemble was a bit drab and just not very fashion forward. He has done other great pieces so I’m sure this was just a fluke. Rounding out the judges’ bottom 3 was Miranda, who I am not a fan of, but I’m guessing she took the spot of Helen for the judges. My problem with her repeat pencil skirt, was just that. I am not seeing a lot of diversity or creativity from her. A pencil skirt and a crop top we have seen now 3 times. But, luckily for the bottom designers, they were all safe thanks to…….Sandro and his crazy runway antics, which all made for a couple of firsts on Project Runway.

Sandro’s demise was clearly going to a hit a boiling point from the start of the season. He often came across as rude and loud. This week in particular, it was evident he could not handle critiques or anyone’s opinion but his own. It also became evident that he has some huge issue with Zac Posen. I am not so sure as to why since all of the judges have offered critiques. So the first runway first from Sandro was speaking to the judges upon him finding out he was safe. Generally, when a designer finds out they are safe, they all march to an offstage room, and yes, they can then complain. However, Sandro decided to ask the judges for some notes right on the runway. It happened right after the judges jumped on Helen for her garment and only being safe because of her immunity she won last week. Zac offered both harsh and constructive advice. It was clear Sandro did not agree and Heidi eventually shooed him off by saying maybe next week we can offer more if you are in the top or bottom. In finally getting to the offstage room the designers of course began to discuss what just happened on stage. Helen was upset because of what was said to her and so of course, Sandro chimed in. However, several designers pointed out that he should have not done or said what he did. There is a time and place and his statements to the judges were unnecessary. Helen and others called it what it was, DISRESPECT. This is all when things started to unravel. Ken had jumped in and the two were just going back and forth, with of course the voices getting louder and louder. It was then we saw another Project Runway first from Sandro and he busted out of the room and out of the building. He was knocking things down, throwing off his microphone equipment and knocking out a camera. Due to all of this, Sandro was the one who was gone this week and all of the other designers were safe from eviction.

Sandro’s Look:                                  sandro

So for me, Sandro’s design this week was poor enough to send him home, but if he wanted to go out showing childish behavior then so be it. Future lesson for casting when you try to cast for the drama, there might be signs of someone being too dramatic! Next week we are back to team challenges and yet again with another unconventional challenge, which makes me wonder how dramatic are they trying to be this season! Anyways, can’t wait!

September Means Fashion, Fashion & More Fashion

Many know that of course in September, every year, that New York Fashion Week rolls around. It is a time where designers put on some great runway shows to present their collections for the next season, so for this September, its Spring of 2014. This year is no different, but I am excited to see that there are also some other great fashion shows to check out that are of a different variety. But first, back to NYFW,  Mercedes Benz Fashion Week has released the official schedule for shows occurring from Sept. 5th-12th.

1                                                images

This is a complete schedule, as released from MBFW. Most of the shows will occur at Lincoln Center. However, some shows are offered off-site and are listed as such. There are still some shows that can’t be found on this list, but would likely be occurring during this same time frame. I am excited to attend as many as I can and of course will do a write-up for each show that I attend! Even outside of attending shows, networking and just being at Lincoln Center during this week is a phenomenal experience. There are so many great attendees to meet, lots of vendors set up with samples/handouts and much more!

As far as specific shows, I am of course excited to see some presentations from designers I saw earlier this year as they presented their Fall 2013 collections. Candela, Monique Lhuillier, and Venexiana are just a few runway presentations that I am excited to see present again. There are also quite a few that I am hoping to attend for the 1st time-Project Runway finale designers, Rebecca Minkoff, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Zac Posen, DVF, Mathieu Mirano, Carolina Herrera, Tory Burch, Badgley Mischka, Jenny Packham, Rachel Zoe, Nanette Lepore, Michael Kors, Betsey Johnson, Anna Sui and really so many more! Let’s face it, all of the shows would be great to attend and I imagine the collections will all be great. I wish the designers and their teams luck on these final few weeks as their final prep work is ongoing!

There are some other great events to report as well. I was not able to attend ENK’s recent trade shows, but there are 3 great events upcoming for September. ENK is the most exclusive trade show producer in the United States. It includes over 10,000 design companies/brands. I missed the Accessorie Circuit, which is a comprehensive women’s accessory and footwear exhibition featuring designer and fine jewelry, handbags, footwear, scarves, belts and gift items. There was then also, the Intermezzo collections, which is the perfect opportunity between the major women’s fashion markets for retailers to replenish all classifications of their ready-to-wear inventory — contemporary, denim, bridge and evening. These are some of the sneak peeks that were available!

acic_sneakpeek_aug01                               acic_sneakpeek_aug02                                      acic_sneakpeek_aug03

So there was also Children’s Club, which is an international exhibition featuring every category of children’s clothing from newborn to age 12, layette items, fashion accessories, footwear, toys and gifts. Even missing the August exhibition, there is also in early October so that would be great to attend. Here are some sneak peeks though from the August shows.

sneakpeek_aug_03                                               sneakpeek_aug_04                                                 sneakpeek_aug_05

There is a lot coming up though that I plan to be in attendance at and to fully report what I see and also take some great pictures of. First, there is TMRW, which is a showcase of tomorrow’s premier brands, highlighting fresh talent and exceptional quality. Then there is Coterie, which is an international fashion exhibition in the U.S. featuring contemporary to traditional women’s ready-to-wear. Finally, there is Sole Commerce, which is a trade show dedicated exclusively to upscale footwear and handbags with the best domestic and international retailers.

All in all, there is a lot coming up and I am excited to cover it all for Fashion Nexus!!

What’s Hot for Swim in Summer 2014!

So twice a year, many individuals in NYC flock to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Its an exciting time and I know I am eager to attend some great shows in September. In the meantime though, here is a little bit to warm people up for September. Miami gets to host some fashion festivities for fashion week as well for summer previews for swimwear. In mid-July, MBFW for SWIM was held for many designers to show their collections for Summer of 2014. This all looked like a great time and I’ve looked thru a lot of various runway photos and saw a lot of great pieces. You can click here to learn more about news and updates associated with this event. If you click here, you can see the full schedule and all designers who participated.

So in looking through all the photos, here is my list of who I thought showed some great pieces, enjoy!

What’s Hot for Swim in Summer 2014!

Twice a year, many flock to NYC to enjoy previews for upcoming designers and their collections. September is right around the corner for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week so here is a post to get everyone warmed up! NYC is not the only location who gets host fun fashion festivities. Miami also hosts fashion week for swimwear, which was recently conducted in mid-July. Designers came to showcase their collections for Summer 2014. I have looked thru most every collection and summer 2014 is going to look great when it comes to swim and beach wear! If you want to learn more about Mercedes Benz Fashion Swim, click here. Here is my list of designers and collections that I enjoyed the most!

Beach Bunny Swimwear

Beach Bunny really had everything I enjoy about a swimwear collection, all in all, creating something for everyone and creating options. There was basics, such as a traditional yet always trendy white bikini. There was pops of great colors that work great for swimwear such as tangerine and sherbert orange, or light pinks. I also enjoyed this great print of a kaleidoscope mixture of colors. I also like to see the daring, something bold and a little different, which Beach Bunny did with leather-like infusion and suspenders. Finally, there was the pushing of the envelope and working towards making the cuts or styles look different.

Dolores Cortes

So again with what I like, its options, seeing something different/being bold, color, prints and the special touches. Dolores Cortes has done just that. There is a lot of great color here with turquoise, yellow and bright pinks! The floral prints are also immaculately gorgeous. I love that there is also some great pieces to use as cover-ups that I also see easily transitioning to pieces that can be worn either on or off the beach-maxis and long skirts. The lines created and cuts or styles all look great here and really eye-catching.

Nicolita Bikinis

h-623_w-360                                  h-623_w-362                         h-623_w-365

Nicolita hit the mark spot on for some great basic swimwear pieces and bikinis that scream FUN! I love the V-shaped and polka dot pieces. I love the teal and baby pink with colors.

ViX Paula Hermanny

h-623_w-360     h-623_w-362      h-623_w-361       h-623_w-364

The difference I saw with the ViX collection was the focus wasn’t just to swimsuits. It was an equal focus to both swimsuits and tunics/maxi dresses. More so than a swimwear or beachwear collection I thought almost more resortwear, but nevertheless it was refreshing and great. The colors and prints were not as light and playful as other collections so I was intrigued by this take with some darker colors/prints. Navy blues and purples really looked great in this collection.

Zingara Swimwear

h-623_w-360        h-623_w-362        h-623_w-363       h-623_w-366

First off, I love the sheer tangerine/red cover-up, so cute! I also love the floral black and white print and its a great twist to a basic piece. The floral mix with leopard is also great and the lighter shade of green, maybe olive green looks great as the back drop. Overall, just a lot of great prints, cuts, styles and again, pops of color in yellow and orange, love it!

Project Runway’s Perfect Formula for Surprises & DRAMA!!

logo

**QUICK NOTE: I wanted to say how great a time I am having with blogging on Project Runway this season. I am excited that my posts are out there for so many to read. If you enjoy, leave some comments and tell me who you are liking this season! Also, I have lots more posts on Fashion Nexus, including GIVEWAYS, so Like on Facebook or Follow on Twitter to check it all out and keep updated

So back to Project Runway, just what is this perfect formula?? Its when Project Runway makes their already dramatic unconventional challenge also a team challenge! This week, the designers were not only paired into teams of 2, but were also off to Coney Island to play some carnival games. Sounds fun right? Well yes, but the prizes won for the games were the unconventional materials this week for the challenge. Now, there was also a part about giving out Yoplait samples, having those sampling to provide descriptive words about the yogurt and then designers would choose 3 words for their garment’s inspiration. I am not so sure about this part since it was barely mentioned on the runway and I’ not sure any garment evoked inspiration from yogurt descriptions, but nevertheless, that was the entire challenge. So who were the pairings that brought out some surprises this week and who brought out the drama!?

Judges’ Bottom 2 This Week: Timothy/Miranda (Timothy eliminated); Alexander/Justin

timothy                                                         -project-runway--sea

This season has a lot of big personalities so really any pairing could have had some DIVA moments. However, it was surprising that quite a few were actually nice and many teams worked very well. Kate and Helen are 2 strong ladies, but combined that determination and used it for a greater advantage since their dress was immaculate. Kate said she imagined as if they could have been sorority sisters, although, I think you might find cattiness there so probably not the best metaphor, but it was great to see their professional efforts. Ken and Alexandria are 2 others with strong personalities this season, but ended up working so well with their respective partners, Jeremy and Dom. So while a few had no issues partner-wise, there was still some drama in store!

Two teams took the prize on being most dramatic, Sue and Sandro, and Miranda and Tim. Sue pretty much caved to Sandro’s diva ways, which we can see really implode in next week’s preview, but the 2 most crazed were Timothy and Miranda. It was a clear predominant storyline for this episode and the 2 already knew each other before this show so its so odd that they were paired together?? I find both at fault here. Timothy of course with his inexperience really shining thru again and instead of rants on sustainability this week, we got unicorns instead. Miranda however showed she was just as difficult as instead of trying to work it out with Timothy, she really went the unprofessional route instead-yelling and whining both behind his back and right in front of him. All in all, neither showed a great team effort and it was really evident with disconnected pieces. So what did this mean for their future on the show?

Sandro/Sue’s piece, barely escaping the bottom 2 in my opinion!

s_s

This week, there was just a bottom 2. Personally, I had Sandro/Sue and Alexander/Justin in my bottom. Timothy and Miranda were in the judges’ bottom and Timothy went home, which I wasn’t sad necessarily since he hasn’t shown 1 strong piece yet, but I’m not so sure this week’s particular piece was the worst one. I think Sandro/Sue should feel lucky because their flared and fringed look was boring in style and tacky in color. I was surprised that Justin was in the bottom, but I think this was all Alexander, because I remember those hideous puffy sleeves last week! This look really just had too much going on-peplum, fringe, vests and more! However, as I’ve said before, in Project Runway fashion, when its too much versus too little, too little always goes home. That was Miranda and Timothy’s look. It was quite boring. I actually thought the yellow vest saved the dress from the off-putting petal right smack dab in the middle. So even though this wasn’t my bottom and who I would have sent home, I was fine with this decision. The top designers this week though did really stand out and it was clear who got this challenge and who didn’t.

Judges’ Top 2: Kate/Helen (Helen as winner); Dom & Alexandria

kate                                                               dom

I actually had Jeremy and Ken in my top 2 because the blue metallic pants they did were smokin’! Their whole look was so polished so if there had been a Top 3, the judges would have been crazy to have not included them. But even though I didn’t put Dom and Alexandria in my top 2, I was glad they were up there. Their garment was so unique and full of animation. It really had character and I’ve not seen anything ever like that from this show before so it was a nice change of pace. The winners, with Kate and Helen were certainly well deserved. I was so surprised that Kate gave Helen the win, but I think it showed how gracious she can be and I can see much more confidence in her this season. I’m sure she wanted Helen to feel some security for next week. Their structured red sombrero mini was just so spot on and barely looked like it was made from sombreros. Congrats to them for their win!

Honorable Mention from Me: Ken & Jeremy’s Look!
